| History of The Jackson FeedStore Building |
|
The Feed Store of Jackson Restaurant is located in historic downtown Jackson, Kentucky. The "Hogg Building" in which The Feed Store is located was built for Dr. William Price Hogg, a 1912 graduate of the
University of Louisville Medical School. Entrance into the restaurant brings you into the area once occupied by the Jackson Drug Store. In it's heyday, the pharmacy was described by the Louisville Courier Journal as the "most modern and best appointed drug store east of Louisvile." The extended dining room area, in those early years, once housed a billards parlor. We currently have on display in this area a partial law library that dates back to the early 1900's. The second floor of the Hogg Building contained offices--including the law practice of Dr. Hogg's son, James Stephen Hogg--and the third floor was made up of apartments, as well as a lodge hall which was the scene of dances and social functions. The old drug store was a popular gathering spot for local young people who enjoyed the soda fountain, ice cream parlor, jukebox and dance floor it featured for many years. The soda fountain remained in use until the drug store closed several years ago. The Feed Store's tin ceilings and crown molding, and the hardwood floors, are original to the building's 1914 completion date, as are the massive pieces of matching furniture seen in use. The Hogg Building, one of Jackson's architectural treasures, is on the Kentucky Heritage Registry as a historical landmark. |
