After I became Mayor of Jackson, I was given the responsibility of trying to help the Airport. Everyone seemed to have lost interest in it. With the need of keeping the helicopter here and the help of the Kentucky Department of Transportatio, and the cooperation of the First National Bank & Breathitt Fiscal Court, we have accomplished the following;
Pilots Lounge, so the helicopter crew could sleep & take showers.
Resurfacing the runway and hangar area.
Purchased a new tractor.
Installed roughly 2700 ft. of new fencing.
All of this was accomplished with Federal monies of which $389,800 was given to the airport board as a grant. All of this was accomplished after the board authorized me to obtain all possible grants. We are in line for more funding next year. I feel the airport is a very important piece of the community, as we work with everyone to make it the asset it can become. |
