| SMS Choral Ensemble Deemed Distinguished 4-13-05
On Wednesday, March 29, a small choral ensemble from Sebastian Middle School participated in the Kentucky Music Educators’ Association (KMEA) Festival. Kentucky Music Education Association is an organization comprised of Music Educators’ across the state of Kentucky, and are in charge of working with the state to make decisions about music education, such as state wide performances, and what needs to be included in the music portion of the Kentucky Core Content. In the springs all teachers who are a member of KMEA have the opportunity to involve their students in the KMEA Festival which is comprised of students performing as large groups, ensembles (12 or less performers), quintet (5 people), Quartet (4 people), Trio (3 people), Duet (2 people), or solo (1 person). The groups were then judged based on their performance. The judge then assigned a rating based on that performance level, Novice-being the lowest rating, to Distinguished- being the highest rating. Sebastian Middle School chorus director Elizabeth McCoy had chosen an ensemble to represent the middle school this year. The ensemble included Jessica Hounshell, Diane Noble, Brittany Chandler, Jessica Vanmeter, Ashley White, Kim King, Keesha Howard, and Stephanie Ritchie. They sang a Jazz tune entitled “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing,” which was originally an Instrumental tune until rewritten for vocals by Irving Anderson. The singing of this tune, with the addition of some choreographed Broadway movements, earned the harmonious bobcats a Distinguished rating for their performance. “I guess all those after school practices paid off,” Reflects Diane Noble after hearing that the group had received a Distinguished rating. The students devoted every Tuesday and Thursday after school starting the last week of February to practice their routine. There were also extra days like Wednesday and Friday before the performance that students reviewed the routine after school at SMS“ I think we deserved the Distinguished…we worked really hard,” agreed Brittany Chandler when asked her opinion about the rating the group received. “ I am very Proud of my students.” Ms. McCoy shared, “ They worked hard, and their work paid off. It is the moments like these when teaching is the most rewarding profession on earth!” Even though the ensemble has completed the festival for the year, they are not done yet. They are looking toward the Spring Elementary school tour in which the advanced band will be touring with the addition of the Choral Ensemble. Both Groups and the full chorus will also be performing at the Spring Concert in the first week of May. If you are interested in seeing the performance of the SMS Choral Ensemble then watch channel 9 for the show. Spirit Week at JCS By: Lige Gross 2-11-05 Last week, spirit week was held at JCS. Spirit week is held every year during the week prior to homecoming to initiate school spirit and encourage attendance at the homecoming game. This year, the days in spirit week were hat day, red, white, and blue day, dress like your hero day, and purple and gold day. Anyone who wore purple and gold on Friday received a ticket for a free bag of popcorn to be redeemed at the homecoming game against Estill County on Saturday. Many JCS faculty members and students participated in the week-long event. JHS Senior Spotlight 2-11-05 This week’s Jackson High School senior spotlight is focused on Ms. Samantha Fugate. The class dissected the whole week and had a test on Friday in which they had to label parts of a cat. The class had to locate the following parts of the cat; the oral cavity, the esophagus, the stomach, pyloric sphincter, the small intestines, the Ileocecal valve, large intestines, the pancreas, the liver the gallbladder, the spleen and the diaphragm. Even though some were a little squeamish, the class really enjoyed the experience and learned a lot from this hands-on activity. PHOTO HERE Baby Think It Over By: Brett Robinson and Randy Combs 2-11-05 The 8th grade students at JCS are participating in the Baby Think- It- Over program. The purpose of Baby Think- It- Over is to give the students a chance to experience a realistic day of parenting. Students are assigned an infant simulator for 24 hours. The “babies” cry at random intervals, and students must care for them. The students are required to keep a diary of how often the “babies” cry, the duration and their feelings about the “baby” crying. The students are given a pre and post test during the program. Many students have stated that because of this experience, they will wait for many years before becoming a parent. Mrs. Hollan’s Kindergarten Learns About Dance 2-11-05 Denise Whitcher (“Doc”), pediatrician at Aaron Jonan Memorial Clinic, visited Mrs. Hollan’s kindergarten class at JCS on February 10. She brought a victrola for show-and-tell, which is an antique record player that must be cranked to play. While listening to records played by the victrola, students paired up and learned different dances. Denise visits the class every week and shares a story, teaches a craft, or brings something for show-and-tell. Mrs. Hollan and her class would like to thank “Doc” for visiting them each week. PHOTO HERE JCS Freshmen Fundraiser for Thomas Little 2-11-05 JCS freshmen recently held a fundraiser to benefit their classmate, Thomas Little, who was in a car accident. The class sold chances for a giant Nestle Crunch bar donated by Jackson Wholesale. The chances were sold around the school for $1 each. A drawing was held by Mr. Yount and Grace Bio was the lucky winner. PHOTO HERE JCS Drama Performance By: Tara Epperson & Cassie Watkins On Friday, February the 4th, the Jackson City High School Drama Class performed two wonderful plays. The class, along with their teacher, Mr. J.C. Sewell, worked for five long months, and by watching the plays, you can honestly say that their work really paid off. There were two showings of the productions. The first showing began at 10:00 for the elementary students, and the other started at 1:00 for the enjoyment of the high school. Members of the community were all encouraged to come out and watch the show. The first play, “The True Story of Cinderella,” fills us in on a “few” things that were left out of the original tale. The story begins with a poor family of three in the county of Bare Cupboard. Mama, played by Sophomore Kathryn Yates, happily tells her two daughters Drizella, played by Martha Herald, and Anastasia, played by Monica Collins, that she is to be remarried and that the girls are going to have a stepsister. They just can’t wait to finally meet her, but they end up changing their minds once they find out how mean and conceited their sister to be is! Ella, played by Tara Epperson, is nothing like the girls expected. She won’t share any of her toys, she doesn’t help do the chores, she would never allow her sisters to wear one of her dresses, and she never helps with the chores. Finally, after Mama discusses this problem with Ella, she goes into a rage. She literally makes herself the victim; by doing all the chores and MAKING her sisters take her toys and dresses. When Drizella and Anastasia offer to help her she just yells at them and threatens that when she marries her handsome prince, he will make sure that they are punished for the way they treated her. She decides that she is permantly going to sleep in the fireplace and she officially changes her name to Cinderella. The girls come up with a plan to get Cinderella out of the house by making mama pose as a fairy godmother. Cinderella unquestionably falls for it, as she is a “tad bit dim.” Once at the ball, Cinderella finds her handsome but slow prince, Bob, played by senior Carl Nallieux. He agrees to marry her and to have her sisters beheaded. While the Prince and Drizella dwell it out in a sword fight, Anastasia makes a phone call and buys the royal loan company that is responsible for giving loans to the Prince’s kingdom. She calls in his debt and now owns his kingdom. This left Cinderella and the Prince with nowhere to go, so mama invites them to move in with her and the girls as their butler and maid. Now you know the true story of Cinderella. The next play, “Attack of the Giant Ex’s,” takes place in a typical high school. Danny, played by Kelly McIntosh, meets up with your average girl next door, Laurie, played by Kathryn Yates. They are really getting close until Brooke (Tara Epperson) comes along. She is a wild, flirty Hollywood girl and Danny is hooked. He breaks up with Laurie for Brooke and Laurie really doesn’t like it. She makes up her mind that she has to get Brooke out of the way. Before that can take place, Brooke finds out that Danny had been cheating on her with Denise (senior Kim Allen). Brooke and Laurie team up and try every way possible to make Danny miserable. Danny has to find a way to break them up so he calls them both and acts like he wants them back, just to get them mad at each other again, and boy does it ever work. Both girls hate each other again and Danny and Denise can be happy. Or can they? Danny then starts flirting with a woman in the audience, and Denise who is offstage through the whole play reveals herself and cancels the date she had scheduled with Danny that night. Poor Danny. If you didn’t get a chance to watch these plays live, try to catch them on channel 9, JHS-TV. JCS Raises Money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Program By: Randy Combs 1-30-05 The Jackson City School 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) students participated in a math-a-thon, which helped to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Ten students participated in this event and raised an amazing $782.51. This money will be used for children and families in their time of need. Everyone at JCS would like to recognize these students and congratulate them on a job well done. The students who participated are: DeShanna Allen, Ashley Allen, Alinan Bailey, Alexandra Herald, Shaniquiwa Howard, Ryan Lovins, Kristian Patrick, Hannah Patrick, Kendra Tolson, and Jarrod Wolfe. A special thanks to JCS 21st CCLC staff member Shirley Tolson for coordinating this successful event. Dinosaur’s Bring About a Surge of Excitement for Learning By: Justin Gross 1-30-05 Mrs. Hollan’s kindergarten class has been studying dinosaurs. In the weeks leading up to the lesson, they read the Magic Tree House Book “Dinosaurs Before Dawn.” This book helped to illustrate the differences between carnivores and herbivores. Sarah Clevenger, a seventh grader, came to the class and showed the students her dinosaur collection. This impressive collection included a saber tooth cat skull, a Velicoraptor replica skull, a herring fossil, minerals, a Trilobite, an Allosaurus replica skull, tools that paleontologists use, as well as a wide variety of other items. The students really loved the opportunity to study these amazing animals of the past and the lesson turned out to be a great success. JHS Senior Spotlight 1-30-05 This week’s Jackson High School Senior Spotlight is focused on Mr. Joseph Noble. He is the seventeen year old son of Leonard and Paula Noble. This is the twelfth year that he has attended Jackson City School. Joey is very active in school. He has been on the track team for the last four years. He also played on the middle school basketball team when he was in 8th grade. Joey enjoys spending his time four- wheeling and talking on the phone. While attending Jackson City School, Joey has received many English awards. He is also a member of the Upward Bound Program. His future plans are to attend EKU and become an X-ray technician. Riverside Christian School…Covering the Campus 1-26-05 A brand new set of World Book Encyclopedia 2005 now stands proudly of the library shelves. Many students helped make this possible. A four week reading incentive program called Partners in Excellence was presented to the student body. Students were encouraged to read books or, for the youngest, to be read to. Each student also was encouraged to sign up sponsors for the books they read. All the pledges collected went toward the purchase of the new encyclopedia. World book helped by contributing $1.00 for every $3.00 raised and the Parent-Teacher Fellowship provided some sponsorship also. Forty-two students took part in the program. Of this group, twenty read (or were read to) and gained sponsors apart from the PTF. They are as follows: (** read at least 10 books; * read at least 7 books) Brad Combs, Tyler; 11th grade: Chase Combs, Bobbie Jo Haddix, Kendra Miller, Kim Miller*, Dorothy Poppy; 10th grade: Paige Sizemore; 6th grade: Maura Watkins**, Michelle Wilson; 4th grade: Jordan Daniels**, Jamie Napier*, Cody Noble**, Deanna Noble**; 3rd grade: Noah Mollands*; 2nd grade: Isaiah Johnson**; Kindergarten: Kasey Campbell**, Kaleigh Smith**. One young man, second grader Isaiah Johnson, deserves special recognition. He read 64 books! The three top students earning pledges were Zane Watts, Kaleigh Smith and Kasey Campbell. Other students who participated in the program were Jacob Baker, Gary Barnett, Caleb Tapio, Brooke Hall, Aaron Enfusse, Jeffrey Reed, Michael Roberts, Tommy Moore, David Strong, Whitney Noble, Autumn Collins, Alexis Haddix, Allie Obair, Alex Southwood, Alex Cornett, Kendra Crowe, David Poppy, Joey Gross, Randall Hardin, Steven Molands, Ashley Tincher, Colton Griffith. Certificates and medals furnished by World Book were part of the program. This program offers the students opportunity to sharpen reading skills and gain a love of reading. A special page was designed to be placed inside the World Book set. All students who participated will have their names placed on this special page. Operation Christmas Child From the smallest kindergartener to the tallest senior… every student at Riverside will be taking part in Operation Christian Child 2004. The Student Council once again initiated this activity which is becoming a tradition at Riverside. It all begins with shoe boxes. Each class brings in empty shoe boxes, preferably large ones. The students then proceed to fill the boxes with toys, school supplies, personal hygiene items, etc. The students bring in items and sometimes go shopping together for them. Each shoe box is packed full, some for boys and some for girls. The boxes are then shipped to the Samaritan’s Purse Organization. They in turn ship the boxes all over the world to children in poverty stricken countries. The students at Riverside have been averaging 60-70 boxes a year. This year they hope to do better yet. There will be an ingathering Tuesday, November 23m, in the gymnasium after the Thanksgiving dinner and program. Parent/Teacher Fellowship The PTF just completed another successful fundraiser. They took orders for and sold more than 300 boxes of Dunkin’ Donuts. Purchasing a year’s subscription to World Book online and also getting very helpful videos for upper classmen are two projects that the group has underway. Field Trip to Morehead Mr. Monroe’s physics class traveled to Morehead State University last Friday to visit the materials testing lab taught by Dr. Grise. He and a graduate assistant helped the class test the stretching metals, bringing to life the stress versus strain graphs in their textbook. Dr. Grise welcomed the group with donuts and colorful brochures describing the industrial engineering technology curriculum offered by MSU. The group also took a brief tour of the robotics lab. Thank you, Dr. Grise, for a very interesting and lively presentation said the class. has gained two new students. Their names are Bruno Cecilia and Choe Jung Ho. Bruno is from Santo Andre, Brazil. He is going to be here for six months as a senior. In his spare time, he enjoys surfing, and playing handball and soccer. When asked what he likes best about Kentucky, he responded “the snow”. Choe Jung Ho is from Seoul, South Korea. He enjoys soccer and basketball. He will be here for a year as a sophomore. Everyone at JHS would like to welcome them and wish them the best of luck! JCS Cheerleading Update By: Tara Epperson 1-21-05 The cheerleaders of Jackson High have really been busy. Not only have they been selling cotton candy as a fundraiser, they along with their sponsor Andrus Douthitt-Sizemore have come up with a new way to spread school spirit. They have decided to sponsor a banner contest. All of the homeroom teachers were given the option to indulge in this activity with their students. Each class that was willing to participate was supplied with a bed sheet, which will serve as the banner. These banners will then be hung the J.B. Goff Memorial Gymnasium after judging on January 28 in order to encourage the basketball teams. As a reward, Mr. Tim Spencer agreed to award a pizza party to the class that makes the best banner. Be sure to come out and support our cheerleaders when they compete in a cheerleading competition on February 26th at Breathitt High School! Earth Involvement & Study By: Michael Hamblin 1-21-05 Mrs. Davidson’s ICP students are currently learning about rocks and minerals that make up the earth. Last week, students conducted a lab using minerals. Students were given ten rocks and minerals to identify. They conducted streak tests to identify the minerals streak. The students used glass plates, fingernails, etc. to conduct hardness tests. The students also determined whether the mineral had a metallic or non-metallic cluster. After students gathered all this information, they used a mineral identification key to identify their minerals. Most students identified their minerals with an accuracy of 80 percent or better. Mrs. Davidson said “I am trying to get the students more involved with their environment and to get them to better understand it. If they understand that certain things evolve and create unexpectedly that they might be more interested and might want to help.” Murder Trial Held at JCS By: Brett Robinson 1-21-05 Mr. Ryan Turner’s Political Science class recently held a mock murder trail which was created by the class. The case consisted of a marital affair, a framed lover, and a supposedly abusive husband, not to mention a dead wife. However the witness statements didn’t match and as the case drew near a close it was increasingly difficult to come to a conclusion. It almost looked as if both parties were innocent. The trial was done as a follow up for the recently completed unit on the court system. Students were allowed to choose the role that they played in the trial. Students involved include: Judge- Julie Sygiel, Bailiff- Chase Cundiff, Prosecuting Attorney- Mitch Smith, Defense Attorney- Michael Oghia, Defendant- James Barger, Witnesses- Jeanna Smith, Shania Caudill, Brent Gilbert, Sarah Demas, and Sydney Howard. The rest of the class served as jurors. The class seemed to enjoy the idea of a mock trial and had a lot of fun. JHS Senior Spotlight 1-21-05 This week’s Jackson High School Senior Spotlight is focused on Justin Gross. He is the eighteen year old Son of Arthur and Alisa Little. This is the fifth year that he has attended Jackson City School. Justin is very active in school. He has been involved in several teams over the years. These include the basketball team, track team, and the baseball team. He has many hobbies and interests which include four- wheeling, riding around, and playing video games. He plans on going to Morehead State University after graduating from JHS this year. College Deadlines Nearing By: Brett Robinson 1-14-05 Mrs. Lavonna Campbell would like to remind JHS students who are applying for college that most college deadlines are Jan. 31, 2005. A lot of college days are coming in spring 2005. Contact the admissions office at the college you plan to attend, to make certain that all of your admission papers are completed. Most scholarship deadlines generally range from Jan. 15 to March 1. It is very important to see Mrs. Campbell for any information you may need such as transcripts and ACT scores. In addition to scholarships, financial aid is also available for those who apply. Contact the admissions counselor at the college you plan to attend for more information. The earlier you apply the better chance you have for acceptance; financial aid is generally readily available. “Eye of the Tiger” By: Cassie Watkins 1-14-05 Tara Epperson and Marissa Manns, JHS Juniors, will be hosting a talk show called “Eye of the Tiger” with the help of Sandy Sewell, JHS-TV Coordinator. It will be on JHS-TV, channel 9, two times a month. It will consist of student interviews, teacher interviews, upcoming events, and more. Tune in to learn about all of the exciting topics that are going on at Jackson City School. Mrs. Little’s Class Rocks! By: Tara Epperson 1-14-05 On Monday January the 10th, Mrs. Diane Little’s third grade class finally completed a unit on minerals and rocks in their science class. Their most recent science project turned out to be the best one to date, according to Mrs. Little. Each student was asked to make a three-dimensional model of the Earth. They could use anything they wanted, so the variety was very interesting. Not only that, but they were also responsible for presenting and explaining their creations in front of the class. When interviewed, student Brent Watts stated, “I enjoyed the section on sedimentary rocks most of all. I also liked making the model of the Earth. I worked on mine for two months.” Caroline Herald commented, “I enjoyed studying facts about the fossils; a few people even brought some in.” Then when asked, Kelli Gillum offered, “I kind of enjoyed learning about the mystery of Stone Henge. I also liked learning about the formations of diamonds and other minerals. The fossils were interesting too.” As you can tell, the students really enjoyed this section, and they can’t wait until their next unit begins! Mrs. Little would like to congratulate all of her students on a job well done! JHS Senior Spotlight 1-14-05 This week’s Jackson High School senior spotlight is focused on Mr. Carl Naillieux. Students have talked about the planet Earth and its explosive past. Natural disasters have been occurring on the earth for millions of years. Many have been much more destructive than the ones occurring today. The students got to choose a natural disaster and research it. They then created PowerPoint presentations on each disaster and presented them to the class.
