Hello friends! I hope everyone is doing well. There has been quite a lot going on with solid waste in Breathitt County and I’d like to let everyone know what events are coming up and what we have available to our citizens.
First, I’d like to talk about PRIDE events coming up. From the time you read this to May 7th, we are looking for volunteers to help with roadside cleanups. If you would like to have a cleanup in your area, please contact me and I’ll help you plan an event for your neighborhood or road. I can supply you with trash bags, safety vests, men working signs for the roadway, and a limited amount of trash grabbers. I also have tee shirts available, but the quantities are very limited, so it’s first come for the shirts. The big event that really brings people out is the PRIDE Drop Off Event at the lot below Wal-Mart. This year it is going to be on April 29th and April 30th, from 8am until 6pm. That is a Friday and Saturday. We are accepting general trash, appliances, scrap metal, furniture, etc. We are not accepting any tires or liquid waste. If you have any questions please call me.
Even though we are not accepting tires at the Drop Off event, don’t fret. We are having a Waste Tire Amnesty event on May 19th, 20th, and 21st. That is a Thursday through Saturday. This event will also be held at the lot below Wal-Mart. This event is sponsored by a partnership between the Breathitt County Fiscal Court and the Kentucky Division of Waste Management.
I’d also like to let everyone know that our recycling center hours are changing. We will now be open Monday through Thursday, from 7am until 5pm. We will be closed on Fridays. The recycling center is located at 434 Hwy 1812 North, A.K.A. the ‘County Garage’. Our recycling center is open to ALL citizens, businesses, schools, churches, civic groups, etc. Other counties are always welcome to use our center. If you have a business or large amount of recyclables and you can’t bring your items to our center, call me and I’ll be happy to schedule a pickup. Items accepted are cardboard, sorted office paper, newspaper, magazines, steel and aluminum cans, #1 plastic bottles, and #2 plastic bottles and jugs. Some of the items this covers are cardboard boxes, cereal and cracker boxes, water and pop bottles, 2 liter bottles, milk jugs, laundry and bleach jugs, notebook paper, printer paper, copy paper, envelopes(with or without plastic window), manila file folders, soup and vegetable cans, pop cans, phone books, etc. We cannot accept any glass items at this time. If you have a question or need help getting started recycling, please give me a call.
Until next time, remember, we’re all on this world together. Please do your part in taking care of it.

The E-scrap recycling program is also still going on. E-scrap (Electronic Scrap) is basically anything that contains electronics. Computers, televisions, stereo equipment, cell phones, newer toasters, irons, etc. are all examples of E-scrap. If you’d like to participate in E-scrap recycling, you can bring your electronic items to the Breathitt Co. Maintenance garage located at 434 Hwy 1812 North, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. For more information, feel free to call me at 666-3818.

One last thing, I’d like to remind everyone that uses needles for insulin, allergy shots, etc. to please put them in a closed container such as a milk jug, pop bottle, or something similar before throwing them in the trash. Loose needles, even those with caps, pose a real hazard to our garbage workers. Those guys have a tough job already, so let’s do all we can to help keep them safe. Until next time, remember, we’re all on this world together. Please do your part in taking care of it.
