Under the leadership of the Student Council, a Great Strides event was held on the campus last week.

Each student was encouraged to take part in a 3 mile walk, first getting sponsors to donate money for their participation.

The first day, all the students grades 1-12 gathered at the pavilion and walked three loops on the campus. This was slightly more than 1 1/2 miles. The second day they did a repeat.

A few adults came out Saturday evening to support the event and walked five loops. When all the donations were gathered in a total of over $600 was raised for Cystic Fibrosis research.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening disease which affects the lungs and digestive system. There is no cure at present. Currently it is affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. The dollars raised through Great Strides will keep critical CF research moving forward.

The Riverside Christian High School art class participated in the Association of Christian Schools Art Festival held recently in Louisville, Kentucky.

Riverside Christian School art students brought home a number of ribbons from the ACSI Art Festival. The students are, back row (l-r): Dwayne Ramey, Jeremy Southwood; front row (l-r): Cody Cundiff, Carrie Banks, Heather Neace, Michelle Wilson, and Michael Fugate.

The ACSI Art Festival is an annual event for Christian school students from all around to come together to show their art work and compete to win a blue, red, or white ribbon.

Not only did the art class get an opportunity to admire other students art work, but they got to participate in two out of three workshops as well.

When the awards were revealed, each RCS student received either a blue or red ribbon for each of their entries. It’s safe to say that not one student left unsatisfied.

Michelle Wilson, an RCS participant, said, “I really enjoyed the trip to the Art Festival. There was a lot of different art and a lot of different people. I got two blue ribbons and other people in our art class received blue ribbons also. There was a program called making all things new. It really helped me to see God’s creation as beautiful, unique and original.”

The awards received by the RCS students are as follows: Dwayne Ramey – Superior (Digital Photography), Carrie Banks – Superior (Drawing-Pastels), Excellent (Drawing-Pencil), Michelle Wilson – Superior (Digital Photography), Superior (Drawing-Pastels), Heather Neace - Superior (Digital Photography), Excellent (Drawing-Pastels), Jeremy Soutwood – Superior (Drawing-Pastels), Excellent (Digital Photography), Cody Cundiff – Superior (Digital Photography), Excellent (Drawing-Pastels).

One small walk for us…

One Great Stride for Cystic Fibrosis

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has invited Riverside Christian School students, faculty and staff to join thousands of others across the country for its annual walk event. The event is Great Strides: Taking Steps to Cure Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening disease which affects the lungs and digestive system. Presently there is no known cure. But donations go to make possible on-going research for a cure.

The Student Council is sponsoring a 3 mile walk in which participants find sponsors to donate money to them for walking. All monies received will go to Cystic Fibrosis.

April 15 and 16 are days set aside for Riverside students to participate, walking a mile and a half each day. In order to participate in the walk, students must find at least one sponsor.

April 17 is the 3 mile community walk beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the campus. This is open to everyone. All walking will be done on the campus, starting by the pavilion and completing a loop to the end of the campus road and back. For more information call 66-2359.

————————————————————————————

Riverside Alumni to repeat

popular Motorcycle Domino Ride

Attention! All motorcycle owners. Why not go out for a ride on your bike, enjoy the countryside, have a meal ready for you at the end, and maybe win a cash prize.

It’s called the Rumbling Ram Motorcycle Domino Ride and takes place on Saturday, April 17.

The Ride will begin at 12:00 Noon on the Riverside Christian School campus in Lost Creek (9 miles south of Jackson.)

Stops for riders to collect dominos will be in Buckhorn, Booneville and near Natural Bridge State Park. Cash prizes will be awarded for those with the highest domino counts and the lowest domino count.

Registration for the Ride will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. The fee is $20 and includes a dinner at the campus pavilion at the end of the ride at 4:00 p.m. The cost for a companion rider to play is $10 extra.

Two Riverside Christian School students were recognized by the Association of Christian Schools in their recent Creative Writing Festival in our District.
Bethany Butters, a junior, submitted an original poem entitled “Your Shadow” and received a blue ribbon. Since her rating received a blue ribbon for Superior, her poem was sent on to the ACSI Regional Festival. If she receives another Superior rating, her poem will be put in a publication with others from the Region.
“I was happy with receiving a Superior rating,” said Bethany, “because I really wasn’t expecting it.”
Kayla Noble, also a junior, had two entries. One was a poem entitled “Free” and her other entry was a short story “Lucy’s Story.” Kayla received two red ribbons for Excellent ratings. “I was surprised,” said Kayla. “It was hard. It took me a long time to write those.”

For many years an annual event at Riverside Christian School was a Senior/Parent Recognition Night, generally at the last home basketball game of the season.

This year snow and icy roads and then the District Tourney prevented that. But the show has to go on. Some plans were made quickly. It all took place Saturday night.

Beretta Roberts was next. She was joined by her parents Kevin and Lillie Roberts.

Marilee Strong was introduced and joined by her father Eddie Strong and her stepmother Bonnie Strong.

Each senior presented a rose to his or her mother. Then when they were all together, the cheerleaders came forward and presented a gift to each senior. In closing the seniors escorted their parents back to the bleacher section.

Then the concession stand was opened and everyone was given a free hot dog (or two), a pop, and a piece of a special cake made for the occasion.

More action on the hard court followed. The varsity Rams played a unique team. Once again the opponents were alumni, parents, staff, and some of the women slipped back in the game from time to time.

Throughout the evening different ones, including parents and elementary students, did some coaching. Two junior Rams, Colton Smith and Cameron Stacy, did quite a bit of refereeing, along with Verna Stacy, Jeff Patrick and Scott Holland.

A special closing to the evening was everyone gathering on the gym floor and making a prayer circle as Mr. Roberts led in prayer.

Amazingly, everyone had a great time and seemed to truly enjoy the new twist to the evening. There is some talk that it may become a new tradition.

at Valentine Dinner
Some of Riverside’s seniors did some moonlighting as waiters in a unique restaurant.
But they didn’t get paid for it, not exactly. But they did enjoy it.
A Valentine Dinner, an annual event at Riverside, was held last weekend. It is a final fundraiser for the seniors as they plan their trip to Washington, D.C.
The dinner was held in the Riverside gymnasium which was transformed into a delightful restaurant with a Valentine theme.
The food was prepared by Tommy and Carol Miller and John Paul and Jill Neace. The seniors who waited on the diners were Michael Fugate, Thomas Herald, Chris Hudson, Brandon Potter, Beretta Roberts, Marilee Strong, and Justin Tapio.
Much more behind the scenes work was done by Tom, Dorothy and Tommy Moore, Jack And Dene Thorpe, the Neaces again, Wanda Noble, Becky Baker, and senior advisors, Marcia Thompson and Nancy Hostetler.
The seniors appreciated the key set up help they received from Larry Morroe, Barbara Gross and Andy Keck.
“This is really nice.” “The food is great.” “The seniors did a good job.” These comments and more similar ones were heard over and over throughout the evening.
The seniors are planning a trip to Washington in March.

Photo 1 – Kendra Kiser, Riverside teacher, and her parents gave their order to senior Brandon Potter.

Photo 2 – Senior Chris Hudson waited on Rev. Eldon Miller and his wife Ella June who have come to many Valentine Dinners.

Photo 3 – Senior Thomas Herald waited on Wade Neace and Barbara Gross, RCS art teacher. Ms. Gross played a key role in decorating for the dinner.

Photo 4 – John Paul and Jill Neace and Jill’s parents worked behind the scenes to help make the dinner a success.
