Our service covers the five KHSAA regions of the 12th thru the 16th . While I’m sure many will disagree with our selections we are basically a two man operation being ( Harold my brother and I who both have over 50 years of experience between us in high school basketball as coaches & A.D.’s ) and we spend the summer AAU and team camp season as well as the regular winter season evaluating players for invitation to this special day of basketball for our many friends in the coaching fraternity and those special high school basketball fans across our beloved Eastern Ky. mountains .

The North All Star teams are made up mostly of 16th & 15th region players while the South All Star teams are composed mostly of 12th and 13th region players . We use the 14th region to balance out the rosters as best as we possibly can with an equal amount of perimeter and inside players .

We have a 12 player limit for each team to be able to offer a fair amount of playing time for all players .

Game Rules :

# 1 – The games will consist of four 10 minute quarters with a mandatory time out at the five minute mark of each quarter for substitutions

# 2 – Each group of five or six players will play one five minute period in each quarter

# 3 – No backcourt pressing type defenses are allowed unless a team is behind by 12 at least points

Listed below is the updated but not final rosters for each of the three games :

PIKEVILLE – A mountain product who knows how to win is the latest signee for the women’s basketball team at Pikeville College.
Eden Keeton of three-time 14th Region champion Breathitt County has signed a scholarship agreement with Pikeville College to continue her education.
Keeton helped Breathitt to regional titles each of her last three seasons at the school. In 2009-10, the Bobcats were 22-8 and lost only once against 14th Region competition.
“The object in any sport is to win, and this is something she has plenty of experience with from her high school career,” said Coach Bill Watson of Pikeville College. “We look forward to her bringing that mentality to our program as we continue to build toward winning championships.”
Keeton, a 6-1 center, averaged 7.5 points and 8.8 rebounds for the Bobcats last season. For her career, she averaged 5.7 points and 6.8 rebounds. She also shot 54.6 percent from the field for her senior season, handing out 51 assists, grabbing 40 steals and blocking 25 shots.
Breathitt County won 72 games while losing only 21 during the last three seasons, including an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Sweet 16 in the 2007-08 season.
The Lady Bears have won 37 games the last two seasons and reached the semifinals of the 2010 Mid-South Conference tournament. Watson is set to begin his 14th season as head coach and is the winningest coach in the history of the program.

14th Region Preview

District tournament time is here again in the mountains as teams are gearing up with hopes to making to the Sweet 16 in March. The boy’s 14th region tournament will be held at the Breathitt Co. Coliseum with as many as five teams that can make it to Rupp Arena. Here is a look at top 14th region boy’s team.

Perry Central may have a slight edge as the top team in the region as they spit their regular season meetings with Knott Central and escaped a close one with Breathitt Co. Alan Hatchers troops upset Shelby Valley Friday night and have played a tough schedule which will help in district. Perry Central must survive Buckhorn in the rugged 54th district.

Knott Central has two of the top players in the mountains in Tate Cox and Stuart Stamper. The Commodores ended the season on a sour note as they lost to Henry Clay. Veteran coach Dave Fraley has won a state title at Pulaski Co. and the Knott Central administration brought him in to do the same at KCC.

The Breathitt Co. Bobcats are one of the most improved teams in the mountains with an 18-9 record and won last Friday night over Powell Co. If the Bobcats are hitting from the outside they will be dangerous. The Bobcats will play rival Jackson City in the first round which will be a barnburner.

On paper, the 14th region favorites seems to be more clear with Breathitt Co. and Letcher Central will be the teams to beat to get the Bowling Green.

The Breathitt Co. Lady Cats has played the toughest schedule in the state taking on anyone and everyone. Coach Peggy Moore and her Cats have owned the 14th in recent years and will be the favorite by the slimmest of margins.

The upcoming and Letcher Central Lady Cougars upset Breathitt Co. in the last week of the season and the regional tournament will be held on their home floor. LCC owns the best record in the region going 22-4.

If one of the top dogs should have an off night, look for the Knott central Lady Patriots to easily feel their shoes. KCC has posted a 22-5 mark and has won 14 of their last 15 games.

Around The Commonwealth

Juliann Miller scored 18 points as Mercy defeated visiting Central 56-47 on Thursday night in girls’ high school basketball. Central (14-8) was led by Nicole Coleman and Shaneal Brents with 12 points apiece. It was tied going into the second half, but the Jaguars (19-7) outscored Central 23-11 in the third

The Whitefield Academy Lady Wildcats got 13 points from Whitney Coles and 10 from Abigail Halleron to beat the visiting Eagles 68-26… Deidra Herd had 18 points for Portland Christian.

Zach Jones scored 19 as the visiting Gallatin Co. Wildcats topped the Oldham Co. Colonels. Kerry Smith scored 11 for Oldham County 63-61.

Mike Smith had 28 points and seven steals, Reid Freeman added 24 points and the host Sayre Spartans (16-9) topped the Brown Bears 91-58.

JACKSON – The Breathitt County Lady Cats had a nine-game winning streak halted Tuesday as visiting Letcher County Central – the frontrunner in the 14th Region – used a 12-4 scoring run in the third quarter to win 54-45.
Freshman guard Kelah Eldridge captained the charge for Letcher County Central, scorching the nets for a game-high 26 points. Senior forward/center Shannon Bays followed Eldridge in scoring for Letcher County Central, chipping in 12 points.
Letcher County Central, which claimed its 20th win of the season, trailed at the end of each of the first two quarters before moving out in front in the second half.
Breathitt County took the early initiative, outscoring Letcher County Central 14-11 in the first quarter before ultimately carrying a 27-26 lead into halftime. The Ladycats, however, unraveled in the third quarter. Held to just four points in the first eight minutes after the break, Breathitt County couldn’t get going offensively again until the fourth quarter. Letcher County Central, however, never tapered off enough to lose the lead late in the contest.
Haley Whitaker scored seven points, Erica Meade netted six and Brittany Sexton added three for the Lady Cougars.
Sophomore guard Kendall Noble led Breathitt County (15-7) with a team-high 21 points. Breathitt County also featured two scorers in double figures. Leslie Spencer joined Noble in double figures for the Lady Cats, contributing 11 points.
Eden Keeton (eight points), Courtney Fugate (three points) and Kristen Bowen (two points) also got involved offensively for the Lady Cats.
Breathitt County is slated to visit Morgan County on Thursday and host Estill County Friday.

Former Breathitt QB Haddix tabbed to lead PCC

HAZARD – Breathitt County High School graduate Justin Haddix is now the state’s youngest high school football head coach. Haddix has been named as the new Perry County Central football coach. The 25-year-old Breathitt County native led the Bobcats to a state championship from his quarterback position during the 2002 season. Haddix went on to lead Western Kentucky University, starring as the Hilltoppers’ starting quarterback. The Jackson native has said he plans to run the old familiar Breathitt County offense, which is a wide-open passing attack.
Haddix takes over for Bert Browne. A successful head coach, Browne left Perry County Central to take over the Madison Central football program.
Perry County Central concluded the 2009 season 7-4. The Commodores fell 21-35 to Pulaski County in the first round of the Class 5A State Playoffs.
