Cats Lick Their Wounds, Hit The Books ,Back In Rupp On Saturday

By – Ira D. Combs

Director / Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media & Promotions Service Inc.

Let me pat myself on the back and take a bow . Thank You .

Reflecting back I thought I set the scene at Assembly Hall in Bloomington , Indiana about as accurately and pointedly as it actually turned out to be in last weeks column and the game actually ended about like I thought it would . However , judging by the few e mails I received in response to the column several UK fans just didn’t buy into the fact that it could happen but they are probably the same ones that will be saying the same thing when the Cats head into Nashville and Gainesville later .

The only thing I didn’t project was I just didn’t think UK would put two team fouls in it’s hip pocket and carry them back to Lexington with them , especially in this game . .

But don’t blame Coach Cal for this one folks .

If you’ve ever been on a bench coaching a bunch of players who have already anointed themselves as special then you well know that they don’t always carry the coaches instructions from the bench onto the playing floor and execute them . As a matter of fact rarely does it happen even coming out of timeouts and that’s when you would think it would resonate in their minds most often but youthful exuberance sometimes takes over , that , and occasionally brain cells simply go dead .

Oh yes , all you young and supposedly astute basketball fans of today’s young generation that have been saying today’s young but extremely talented college players can handle anything because they’ve played in these large NBA arenas and high profile McDonald’s all american games before . What have you got to say today ? Somebody ask Anthony Davis if he’s ever experienced anything remotely like Assembly Hall as an opposing player before , heck , ask Terrence Jones , it appeared to effect him as much as anyone in blue and white and he’s a wily old veteran sophomore .

You simply have to experience it a few times before you can mentally prepare for it in future road games . Hopefully , a valuable lesson was learned saturday and this young group doesn’t have to weather the storms that last years 2nd crop of famous freshman did under Coach Cal .

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Time For Cats To Recover Emotionally & Physically , Hit The Books , and Move On

It appeared to be an extremely emotional and physically draining loss for the Kentucky players but in today’s world of college and high school athletics most will tell you that it leaves the players mind and body when they go out the back door of the arena , especially the mental and emotional part .

Fans , especially UK’s , well that’s another matter all in it’s self .

Hopefully none of Big Blue Nation jumped into any of the Commonwealth’s 19 gorgeous state park lakes or off any of eastern ky.’s beautiful mountain topps because the players and coaches I’m sure are alive and well this week working to get better at the Joe Craft Center , live goes on for them and it should for the fans . Fans can’t see the benefits at this point of a loss like at Indiana nor can some coaches or players either but these are the type of games that toughen teams like UK up for the March Madness run . Having played thru this type atmosphere and arena that UK did saturday makes those neutral site games in the NCAA tourney feel like playing in Rupp Arena as they go thru the various levels and weekends of tournament play because the vast and loyal fanbase that follows UK will always garner enough tickets to make a presence in post season play ..

Is it the best of times early this week for the Cats to be taking grade altering semester exams ? Probably not , but when is studying conveniently appropriate for today’s college age youth . Fear not Big Blue Nation and Coach Cal because Bob Bradley and the folks over at the Cats Center will make sure their role in Wildcat athletics is achieved and that is to make sure basketball players and all athletes are well prepared for their semester exams . They have done a super job for many years and rarely get recognition for it but the UK players all know how important and accomodating Bradley and his staff is .

The problem or should I say concern for this young Wildcat roster is that the NCAA mandated 20 hour per week practice rule is dropped the day each student – athlete has their last exam and doesn’t come back into play until the 2nd semester of classes resume around Jan. 5th . .

What does that mean for the Cats ?

It means a lot of time between the lines on the Joe Craft Center practice facility floors and with only three dead pigeon style opponents before Christmas you can lay money that Coach Cal is preparing a part of each practice from today until Jan. 31st for his italian friend down 1 - 64 In Louisville and you can rest assured Coach P is saving a few special moments of his day for Cal and the Cats as well .

Bottom line if you’re a UK player , losing your first game of the season one or two days before the 24/7 practice routine becomes available for your coach isn’t a very pleasant experience to look forward to . Trust me on that one .

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Cal’s Future Scheduling Delimma Concerns Me

Anybody out there think Coach Cal still has concerns after the Indiana loss on this too many early season big game scenarios for freshman to deal with controversy that he has spread thru his twitter account the last few days ?

Yes , he probably does but he should have known what he signed up for , now in his most glorious days as the leader of the Kingdom of Blue is not the time to start wiggling on longtime traditions that the program was built on .

Personally , I think the whole scheduling controversy Cal has created is about two things :

# 1 – Possibly having to beat a long time close friend of the coaching fraternity , ( Tom Crean & Roy Williams) .

# 2 – The possibility of losing to a guy that you once was jealous of and now you’ve grown to hate for various reasons that can’t be accurately validated ( Rick Pitino ) .

In my eyes that’s making decisions concerning your team and school based on personal reasons instead of just about Kentucky basketball .

To my knowledge Adolph Rupp , Joe B. Hall , nor Eddie Sutton ever scheduled a game at UK for any other reason than the betterment of the total program including fan interest and by the way Joe B. took them all on even after he was forced into playing Louisville . Remember those years when UK played Louisville along with Indiana and/or Kansas and/or North Carolina and Jerry Tarkanian’s UNLV Running Rebels or Guy Lewis and his Phi Slamma Jamma teams at Houston not to mention those tough teams the Big Ten used to produce like Illinois and oh yes what about those old time honored matchups each holiday season with ole “Digger” Phelps and his Notre Dame “Fighting Irish” . Oops , I forgot another one , what about the Big Four Classic UK annually participated in at the Hoosier Dome .

Also , let’s not forget the SEC in those years was at it’s peak in hoops producing quality NCAA tournament team type competition at Auburn under “Suitcase” Sonny Smith and Hugh Durham at Georgia and Norm Sloan at Florida and the Ernie and Bernie show at Tennessee and Wimp Sanderson at Alabama . Oops , I forgot ole Dale Brown and his 20 years of solid basketball at LSU as well . Simply and painfully put , in those days the SEC was putting players in the NBA at a similar rate that they do the NFL in recent years .

Now tell me ole crystal ball would you rather face a 16 game schedule of those teams with a few UK juniors and seniors sprinkled in or an 18 game schedule of today’s inept SEC hoops competition with a bunch of UK NBA lottery picks .

I rest my case your honor .

Rick Pitino , Orlando “Tubby” Smith , and even lose lipped Billy “Clyde” Gillispie who reportedly built an ugly reputation on supposed toughness all had their fair share of battles in the scheduling department with various UK athletic directors during their eras but they all ended up playing for the most part ” The Big Three ” that Coach Cal wants to cut to the terrific two .

Having spent eight summers in the late 80′s and 90′s alongside Coach Pitino and still in touch fairly often with his associates at Louisville and also having a few coincidental family contacts with the Calipari camp I can attest to the fact that these two coaching Icons seriously don’t want to continue the UK - Louisville series but they both also know along with their A.D.’s that it would be seriously damaging to both coaches and schools in the all important PR department not to mention some help they both may need in the future from the Kentucky legislature who remember was the initial lightning rod starting that particular series .

So with the Battle of the Bluegrass being pretty much agreed on into the future let’s just see if we can come to a common ground with Coach Cal .

How about signing a series of four game contracts with Indiana and North Carolina over an eight year span and playing each one every other year and keep the Champions Classic in tact between ( UK – Michigan State – Kansas – Duke ) then that scenario will give us at least three big non conference December games ( one at home , one on the road , and one at a neutral site ) instead of the four we presently have and Coach Cal can say he won another battle with the powers that be .

Director – Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Services Inc.

Good News , Kentucky football is not an underdog to NCAA Div. 1-AA Jacksonville State after all according to Vegas and USA Today odds maker Danny Sheridan .

Bad News , Kentucky football is at the cross roads for this particular season with of all things an OVC team as the opponent , if it somehow loses you can kiss this season goodbye and maybe any feinting credibility Joker Phillips has left for the future if he has a future .

The Turning Point News , can Morgan Newton and his receivers find that lost art of pass and catch and ignite the UK offense to some decent SEC credibility ? If so , this game could be the same turning point for Joker Phillips in his 2nd year that it was for Rich Brooks in his 3rd year .

For those of you brave enough to be scene at Commonwealth Stadium saturday let’s hope so . For those of you who are out of the boat completely with the Joker Phillips era then you can tune in too ESPNU at Noon and if things turn sour again you can switch channels or go out and enjoy what could possibly be the last saturday we have with sun and 60′s type weather .

You make the call , I can’t wait to see the listed attendance saturday and for that matter what the turnout will be against Mississippi State & Ole Miss win or loss this saturday .

Bottom line is we start the second half of the football season this saturday in the friendly confines of Commonwealth Stadium where UK head honcho Joker Phillips has been preaching a new mind set to Big Blue Nation the last two weeks , one that says you are never as bad as it seems nor are you ever as good as you may think you are , the real team resides somewhere in between .

Not a bad analogy at the present time for this particular football team .

The only problem I have with that is this team HAS PERFORMED SO BAD at the two most impacted positions on offense that make plays ( QB and WR ) that we may never know exactly how good the rest of this team is because all other areas of the team are starting to show leaks and cracks because they are having to hold the entire fort down due to the offensive guns on the firing line shooting blanks .

Now , as we drift closer to the kickoff of saturdays Homecoming tilt against Ohio Vally Conference power house Jacksonville State the Cats braintrust over at the Nutter Training Center on Cooper Drive has been privately telling their players and themselves another old sports slogan made famous by the late great NFL guru Al Davis .

“Just win baby” , anyway , any how , and by any spread . Got to stop the bleeding before you can patch the wound .

Yep , right now I can’t think of anything better for this team and coaching staff than to just go out and win a game , hopefully , by several TD’s . It’s really of a moot point who it’s against or how it is accomplished the Cats just need to win and maybe get a little of that bad taste out of their mouth from the first half and get a little confidence brewing mentally .

Luckily , the 2nd half schedule is full of teams that are of a more common type talent to UK in size , speed , and athleticism .

Wait a minute , let’s take Georgia out of that last comment especially since UK plays them right beside UGA’s doghouse . Two opponents Jacksonville State & Ole Miss will more than likely be listed as underdogs to the Cats by Vegas . Miss. State & Tennessee are both at home but more than likely will be favored by 8 to 10 points . Vandy is in Nashville this year which will likely make them a slight favorite as well but remember that ugly game the Cats had at South Carolina where they gained a paltry 106 yards , well , Vandy hit the Gamecocks for a grand total of 77 yards on the same field .

As crazy as it may sound on my part , I still think this season has a positive turn to make , I just can’t put my finger on how long it will last . One thing is for sure if the Cats don’t pull out a win this saturday , I’m afraid as ole Dizzy Dean used to say about a pitcher losing his fast ball , ” stick a fork in him , he’s done ” .

I fear the Cats will be too if they don’t stop the bleeding this saturday .

Tri State Sports Media Services Inc.

Joker Phillips and his gridiron Wildcats get saturday off this weekend to lick their many wounds from the last three weeks beat down to the hands of those top tier SEC football programs that they were To Rise to the level of this season . The latest was an old time back porch whipping given to the Cats by South Carolina 54 – 3 . At least the old ball coach should have that bad taste from last years upset out of his mouth today .

The total scores combined from this past three week gauntlet thru the SEC elite ended with a sum of 137 – 20 , that should be encouraging to those recruits who have already verbally committed for 2012 not to mention those still on the bubble in the recruiting scene .

However , considering all factors at this point in this particular season I can’t think of a better time in recent memory for UK football to have or need an open week .

In his post game remarks to the Kentucky football media contingent Rick Minter the UK defensive coordinator said , ” we all have a lot of soul searching to do this week both players and coaches “ and this is true . What I fear for all of the UK coaching staff is that if this full blown downward spiral don’t stop and turn around during this upcoming three game home stretch the new UK President Eli Capilouto and athletic director Mitch Barnhart may have to do some soul searching themselves . Many long time supporters of UK football up to this point have all been consistent in their opinion that the UK administration won’t buy out a Kentucky football coaches contract that has three years left on it and Joker Phillips contract will still have three years on it come the end of this season .

My response to that train of thought is what Matthew McConaughey told his President in the movie ” We Are Marshall ” when he kept trying to get the NCAA to make freshman eligible because of the tragic plane crash . The NCAA kept telling the Marshall University boss that letting freshmen play college football has never been done . After five trips to the NCAA headquarters in Shawnee Missions , Kansas the President had basically given up .

McConaughey went back to his office for a sixth time and told his President to go back one more time and tell the NCAA that there is a first time for everything in both sports and life . You know the rest of that story .

If the ugly losses continue that time may have arrived for UK football in buying out three years of a coaches contract who has done everything ask of him except win .

It’s Officially Hoops Time In The Bluegrass

It’s time once again to focus the center court spotlight at Rupp Arena on ” Cal’s Boys ” and showcase another # 1 recruiting class to the most devoted of Big Blue Nation those who braved four days and three nights of life outside Memorial Coliseum to earn the right to be courtside for another festive night of Big Blue Madness formerly billed as Midnight Madness .

Remember those days when we all stayed up until 1:30 in the morning to watch it on TV or even more insane watched it live and drove back at all hours of the morning all over the Commonwealth to finally crawl in the sack around 4:00 o’clock a.m. and to watch the Cats shoot a few layups and play five on five pickup for about 15 minutes with an occasional slam dunk contest . Remember those days , the late great Bill Keightley affectionately known across Kentucky as Mr. Wildcat used to call it Kentucky’s version of ( an adult sleep over Wildcat style ) .

This year Coach Cal will have the first opportunity in his short time in the Commonwealth to mix an extremely talented freshman class ( Anthony Davis , Michael Kidd – Gilchrist , Kyle Wiltjer , Marquis Teague ) with a few super sophomores ( Terrence Jones & Doron Lamb ) and two seniors of which one will be a prime time player in Darius Miller . This team appears to have as much or possibly more depth in raw physical talent , size , athleticism , and experience across the roster than Coach Cal has had the fortune of coaching at UK .

The curtain raises this friday Oct. 14th at Rupp Arena and those who aren’t lucky enough to be courtside can still see all of the festivities on the IMG Big Blue Sports TV Network ( WKYT – 27 Lexington and WYMT – 57 Hazard ) beginning at 7:00 o’clock friday and conclude at 9:30 . UK has also made it possible for those folks who live a great distance from Kentucky to watch the festivities on the internet by going online to www.ukathletics.com or ESPN3 .

Kentucky is also one of eleven schools that will be featured on the sixth annual ESPNU Midnight Madness show from 9:00 o’clock until 1:00 a.m. EST.

It remains to be seen how many wins this team will put up and how deep into the NCAA tourney it will go but the program is back in the elite status it was for most of the past 60 – 70 years and that makes for another pretty special winter wonderland for the Commonwealth of Kentucky .

UK’s men’s basketball media days will be held this thursday for the statewide media contingent that covers the Wildcats . The days events start with a luncheon followed by a special one on one with Coach Cal in the media interview room at Memorial Coliseum then moves over to the Joe Craft Center for player interviews . It is of course closed to the public but you can keep an eye out beginning around 5:00 o’clock thursday evening for your favorite media outlets to begin reporting and posting information from the days festivities .

NCAA Coaching News

Listed below is a quick look at some new coaches you will see this season running up and down the sideline , oops , I forgot there is a box over their they are suppose to reside in right . Remember last years first ever happening at Rupp Arena to a UK coach when SEC official Mike Stuart run Coach Cal to the locker room for excessively berating him on his officiating tactics and being out of the coaches box , that rarely occupies a coach for half the game in all the games I have covered at Rupp the last six years .

There have been 57 coaching changes in Div 1 – A college basketball since last March , here are what I think will be the top 10 for UK fans to follow the progress of this season .

NCAA School New Head Coach Last Years Coach

Tennessee Cuonzo Martin Bruce Pearl

Arkansas Mike Anderson John Pelphrey

N.C. State Mark Gottfried Sydney Lowe

Texas Tech Billy Gillispie ( Former UK Coach ) Pat Knight (Son of Bobby Knight)

Maryland Mark Turgeon Gary Williams

Georgia Tech Brian Gregory Paul Hewitt

Oklahoma Lon Kruger ( Former Florida Coach ) Jeff Capel

Texas A & M (New SEC school) Billy Kennedy Mark Turgeon

Valparaiso Bryce Drew ( Son replaces Father ) Homer Drew ( Father retires )

Tennessee Tech Billy Payne Mike Sutton ( Former UK Asst. under “Tubby” )

In other related NCAA basketball news it appears those stories in the last year that the college coaching fraternity and college administrators fraternity had been telling it’s media and fan base about getting a positive response from the NBA on the age limit as well as one and done problems that have been raping the college game of it’s prime time players was evidently a lie .

I have seen nothing from any angle of the media coverage of the NBA contract talks that have even mentioned that this problem has even been on the agenda or even discussed in the contract talks to date . The NBA doesn’t care about the college game or any other part of organized basketball it’s all about money and greed as it always has been and will be .

Funny how time changes sports as much or more than any other phase of the American way of life . Just a couple decades ago freshmen couldn’t even play college basketball they had to wait until they were sophomores , now it’s a real struggle to just get one year out of them .

The NBA has without question been the worst run professional sports league on the American sports scene and by contrast the only one except Hockey that permits 19 & 20 year olds to play instead of spending a few years in college or a minor league system yet it continues to be a toss up who blows their money the quickest the immature young players or the greedy old owners .

You would think someone could see the correlation .

The NBA was at it’s strongest and most popular with the American sports fan from 1975 – 1995 because of the quality and quantity of talent in it’s team rosters both on and off the court but I doubt it will ever see those days again .

The players and owners both keep wanting more but corporate sponsors and especially fans have give about all than can afford to give .

Special Wildcat Basketball Events Coming Up

The annual first look of UK basketball’s talent pool in a game type situation will be on display at Rupp Arena (Wed.) Oct. 26th at 7:00 o’clock for Big Blue Nation and it could be just as entertaining as any regular season contest because there will be 10 talented Cats on the floor at all times .

This football team is getting very difficult to write about period , especially without being negative which I hate to do . But I’ll keep giving it that ole college try with winter and hoops in sight . With that being established let’s begin this weeks column .

Not going to talk a lot about the LSU game not a whole lot to say if you saw it you know the offense is giving the entire program a black eye and until somebody steps up on that side of the ball in a play making role it doesn’t matter how solid the defense and special teams play . When you have a quarterback that was 2 for 11 the first half and the nine misses were all three to five feet to the left or right of the receiver or above the receivers head you pretty much have about as feeble a chance of producing points as a UK offensive coordinator as ever had and don’t go down that road that it’s the offensive line coach Mike Summers and quarterback / offensive coordinator Randy Sanders fault . They are two of the most experienced and seasoned football coaches in the college game . Both have developed and put several players into the NFL and have several bowl rings in their possession .

The mistake was made in the evaluation process and it appears both Rich Brooks as well as “Joker” Phillips aren’t alone in that department . The recruiting services were wrong initially as well about Morgan Newton but they had the intestinal fortitude and time to correct their mistake but UK and whoever made the final decision on Newton GOT ALL CAUGHT UP IN THE ORIGINAL EVALUATION OF 5 STAR STATUS and refused to admit or correct it’s initial offer . UK saw that big raw lean body and thought like most ego driven college coaches we’ll coach him up and polish that shiny knight in armuor into all star status .

Now they’re having to ride his coat tails as far as they can . I fear that journey may end with several good college football coaches drifting off into the sunset of their coaching careers .

Now , the good news or at least the relief on the horizon .

It’s almost over Big Blue Nation just hang on and fight your way thru this saturdays matchup with South Carolina in Columbia and it’s mad Old Ball Coach our old nemesis Steve Superior . He is madder than an ole wet hen because his Gamecocks got their feathers plucked last saturday right in their own barnyard and his senior quarterback Steven Garcia once again cost him another game . This time against an Auburn team that’s probably a good 10 points inferior to the Gamecocks but the bottom line is it puts them behind the eight ball as far as the SEC east goes and no room for error or another Wildcat upset like last year .

If the Carolina offense that played last saturday shows up again and the Carolina defense that allowed boat loads of points in it’s first three games shows up on the other side of the ball then it could be respectable this week and a good way to enter the off week and start preparation for the second half of the season . Remember folks I’m trying to find a way to put a spin on a second half resurgence offensively that will put a few points on the board and a couple wins on the left side of the column in the standings .

Regardless of this weeks outcome we will have this three week gauntlet of the NFL D League behind us and the young but improving Cats ( well , the young improving defense anyway ) can play the second half of their schedule against a more common opponent of their football peers . Not counting a Georgia team fighting to keep it’s coaches job and a Tennessee team that the jury is still out on . There will definitely be four beatable opponents to play in Jacksonville State , Mississippi State , Ole Miss , and Vanderbilt even with UK’s offensive woes it’s underrated defense will keep it in those games unless the offense gives up points on turnovers .

By the way in my opinion saturdays effort against LSU could have come up much worse than the final score of 35 – 7 . Ask yourself if you’re a true football fan , would you have pictured UK to be behind only 14 – 0 at halftime if you knew they would have had 43 yards of offense and only three first downs at halftime with it’s first five possessions being of the three and out variety .

Today’s young internet driven sports fan has no idea how bad or embarrassing that final score would have been saturday had that same LSU team have played a Charlie Bradshaw , John Ray , or Bill Curry coached team . LSU would have easily put 70 or more points on one of those teams .

UK has a present situation of no receivers with foot speed that can separate themselves from SEC type defensive backs and a quarterback that has both poor physical and mental skills as well as decision making ability and the ineptness of those two positions are making it look like the entire program has regressed 10 years , but it hasn’t . There are some good football players at UK they’re just young and mostly on the defensive side of the ball .

It’s odd how quick times can change in either direction , I think UK is just a good solid QB and one speedy receiver away from a possible 8 or 9 win season . That’s what makes following UK football so frustrating , always has always will . So close to consistently winning in recent years yet so far away from those coveted 8 & 9 win regular seasons . More than likely by the time they get those two positions fixed the good young talent at other positions will have graduated or went into the professional ranks .

Enlarging the stadium , building sky boxes , suites , and changing coaches every few years , well , haven’t they been their and done that the last 30 years all that has done is give the A.D. reason to increase ticket prices . As long as they play in the SEC they will struggle in football because it’s a cheating league for the most part with some of the most fertile recruiting ground states in the nation but our Commonwealth isn’t one of those states .

Commonwealth In Meltdown On Gridiron Cats

Since the beginning of the Adolph Rupp era or at least since the mid 1940′s the large majority of the adult population of this Commonwealth that we fondly call home has had their own personal opinion of how they could do two jobs in our society better than the individual who held the position no matter what walk of life they come from . Whether it be the science or english teacher at each towns local high school , lawyers , doctors , insurance salesmen , janitors , funeral home directors , and of course my two favorite sources of information the local barber shops and beauty parlors . The beauticians just come on the scene about 20 years ago but make no mistake the ladies young and elderly have an opinion as well .

It has never mattered what their level of knowledge is or if they even have personal past experiences in organized sports or politics , they’ve always had an astute opinion on how they can do two jobs better than the guy that’s doing them .

Those two job descriptions are , drum roll please :

# 1 – The individual who resides in the White House as our leader of the free world .

# 2 – The head basketball coach at UK .

Now as we drift thru the fall of 2011 it has become apparent to me that you can add a third job to this list . The head football coach at UK .

Joe “Joker” Phillips doesn’t have as many critics as Coach Cal does but he’s gaining ground daily . For the life of me I can’t understand why both Cal and Joker launched their two twitter accounts . Their will come a day that both will regret that move . There is enough opportunity for their friends and foes to express their feelings with the internet age world we live in and the vast websites and chat lines devoted to UK sports , why would they want to invite people into their own personal lives .

There has never been as much negativity expressed toward UK football and it’s coach as in the past two months across this state and it all started when the team was 2 – 0 . It has to effect the players mind set on a daily basis , they watch TV and read the paper and most players live on the internet with todays college life . It’s extremely hard to prepare mentally and emotionally for practice and games when a portion of your fan base is constantly berating you , criticizing you , and basically making embarrassing light hearted remarks of your hard working efforts on the field .

I know I just got thru ripping the quarterback above in this very column but I did it as tastefully and painless as I possibly could and sometimes the hard truth hurts .

Lighten up folks and chill as this young generation loves to say . The second half of the season can and will produce some points and wins if you haven’t beat the players down mentally .

Special Wildcat Basketball Events Coming Up

Annual Blue – White Pre Season Scrimmage Set For Rupp Arena Oct. 26th

Most fans can’t wait to see the mega talented # 1 ranked freshman class . Personally , I can’t wait to see what a senior laden Darius Miller brings to the table and how much sophomores Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb have improved both physically and talent wise .

Don’t forget that old time honored saying that most have forgotten about in this one and done age of college basketball . The best thing about a freshman is that he becomes a sophomore and I’m thinking Jones and Lamb both will be much more comfortable and confident in their game as the season unfolds .

This years scrimmage will be televised live on Fox Sports South and the Big Blue Sports TV & Radio Network with WKYT / Lexington and WYMT / Hazard carrying the torch for fans in Eastern and Central Ky.

And to think 20 months ago Billy Gillispie who let’s not forget was brought to us by Lee Todd & Mitch Barnhart had this proud program in complete shambles of major proportions with life long supporters and former players like Mike Pratt ready to separate itself from it . Only two probation years had it in more disarray than at anytime in the last 50 years .

Cats & Their Coach Ready For New Beginning

” Old Time Football Revival Needed By Media ”

By – Ira D. Combs

Director / Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

I’ve grown to love football media day at UK it’s a plethora of opinions 4 – 8 , 6 – 6 , 5 – 7 , 7 – 5 , and occasionally the ultimate optimist 9 – 3 yes , there are a few even in the media but I won’t mention his name . Simply put the day is different than any other opening day sports press conference . In baseball your expected to be either in or out of the playoffs , basketball is either NCAA tourney eligible or Sweet Sixteen , or Final Four but nothing is quite like college football .

Then there are those perks that we media folks cabbage on . The complimentary press guides , free calendars , free media gifts that are always helpful in covering the Cats and of course the complimentary food trays provided on opening day and any other media gathering . Can’t beat UK’s SID staff they go the extra mile in providing info and opportunities for us small time folks as well as CBS , ESPN , and the other big time media entities .

But here is what really happened thru my eyes at the 2011 UK football media day .

Coach “Joker” Phillips stepped up to the podium at the Wildcat Den underneath Commonwealth Stadium last friday morning at exactly 10:00 a.m. to greet the statewide media contingent to the 2011 college football season and his second as head man at UK . After approximately 45 minutes of interviews with the media he left to go out on the field for pictures . Nothing extraordinary came out of the press conference from Phillips himself other than he mentioned that several freshman could possibly play early and often .

However , for a guy that is home grown and has been well liked by the media and multitudes of UK fans over his career there was an odd odor of skepticism in the air after his remarks from those in attendance .

The head Wildcat himself seemed very excited to start the season in his comments and extremely motivated to prove the pre season magazines and it’s writers wrong in their predictions which for the most part have been gloom and doom for the Cats this fall . The mood in the room at that point from the statewide and local media representatives was a mixed review of a feint bit of optimism for another bowl eligible season to the Cats first losing season ( based on a 12 team regular season schedule ) in five years since the bowl streak was started back in 2006 . Many folks who have followed UK football over the last 40 to 50 years never thought they would see the day that a UK football fan base would be sick & tired of following a UK football program that wins fifty percent or more of their games in the regular season then goes to 5 consecutive bowl games .

But that day has arrived .

Big Blue Nation wants more and I’m afraid if they don’t get more by midseason empty seats will pop up in great numbers on game day .

It’s been well documented in recent days why the bleak expectations have been predicted for UK football this fall so I won’t beat a dead horse and mention any names , simply put , it’s the offense . Not that the defense is expected to be iron curtain strong but it should be improved and in other circles the offensive line has gotten some love . No one I’ve talked to mentions anything positive about the offensive skill positions .

Personally , I’ve regrouped from my summer comments or at least taken a more objective view for the time being .

I’m not going to start the season out or at least not in this column spanking a few coaches for their schemes and being critical of a bunch of players that have not had the opportunity to perform yet . None of us know how some of these redshirt freshman or wet behind the ears sophomores will perform in their new roles let alone some of these incoming freshman who have not even worn a college football jersey yet . Also , just to make sure we are all on the same page these other teams across the SEC and college football have lost a few players as well . In some cases maybe even right here at UK it could be as they say down at the old barber shop ( addition by subtraction ) at some positions .

So let’s all step back and take a deep breath and hold our thoughts and opinions for at least the first three games . Well , everybody but me I’ve got to put together a pre season prediction column sometime in the next three weeks so I’m going to give myself a ( football mulligan ) when that day and column arrives .

The only thing that is glaringly apparent to everyone involved and “Joker” admitted this himself friday is that play makers must be found at pretty much all skilled positions across the offense and in the return game as well . But it can be done every team across the USA graduates and losses players every year but all teams carry on , that’s what is so special about college football and college sports in general . Players move on because you only have four years of eligibility .

The University of Kentucky played on without Vito “Babe” Parrilli , they played on without Alfred “Sonny” Collins , they played on without Tim Couch . Now it’s time for someone else to hold down the fort for a few years other that Randall Cobb , Derrick Locke , and Mike Hartline .

Revival Of Old Time Football Perks Needed

I miss good old fashioned nick names especially in football . I miss identifying a favorite player and anointing him with his own personal nickname .

The sports world especially the fan bases and sportswriters in this new modern day and age of technology especially in football have gotten away from nicknames and I don’t like it , there are way too many electronic devices on game day to play with instead of just picking a favorite player and identifying with his play for the day .

I can’t exactly remember how we got away from doing it , maybe us folks in the media are to blame as much as anyone but we’ve obviously not identified or labeled our sports heroes in recent years like we did back in the 50′s , 60′s , 70′s & 80′s . In doing a little research for this column I stumbled upon a New York Times article lamenting the demise of the cleverly nicknamed athlete but even “The Times ” couldn’t pinpoint the root of the problem . Maybe it reflects a loss of intimacy and connectedness with sports as a whole , maybe it is due to the changing way we name our own children or heaven forbid maybe all the good nicknames have been taken .

To me one of the most interesting and best conversation pieces about football is the nicknames players have been attached to over their football careers . Nothing like being able to identify with one of your favorite players during a game by standing up and yelling their nickname after a great catch by a receiver or tackling a quarterback for a sack .

There are many nicknames out their across the sports world and the stories behind their origin are what makes many of them so interesting . I’ll list my top five football player nicknames and you can match them up with your favorite and if this part of my column intrigues you enough pick out your favorite Wildcat attach a new nickname to him send it to me at icombs14@windstream.net and I’ll pick out what I think are the top five and put them in my next column with your name attached to him .

My Top 5 Football Nicknames :

# 5 – ” The Deuce” – Tim Couch / UK Quarterback roamed the sidelines early in his freshman season wearing his soon to be made famous # 2 jersey for several games while Elliott Uzelac & Bill Curry buried UK football deeper and deeper in a hole until Lexington TV sports personality Dave Baker finally started a rally among Big Blue Nation to ” Turn the Deuce Loose ” henceforth Curry finally obliged to a small degree late in Couch’s initial season but “The Deuce” wasn’t really turned loose until Hal Mumme came on campus . Had Mumme not turned Claude Bassett loose who knows where UK football would be today .

# 4 – ” Boomer” – Norman Julius Esiason / Bengals Quarterback got his nickname real early in life because according to his mother the little fellow kicked long and hard while in Mom’s womb and it says here the Bengals won’t be nearly as successful in the future as they were in “Boomer’s” years until the Brown family ” especially Paul ” is out of the picture .

# 3 – “Hacksaw” – Tennessee & NFL linebacker Jack Reynolds is famous in Knoxville because in order to vent his frustration one day after a “Vol” loss Reynolds cut an abandoned Chevrolet Bel Air in half earning the wonderful nickname ” Hacksaw” . This day and age the Vol players just hop in the abandon cars after games around K-town and have a merry old time until the last game of the season when it appears everyone in orange is on their best behavior and that orange jersey performs majic when the blue bloods show up .

# 2 – “The Snake” – Alabama & Oakland Raider quarterback who got his nickname before “Bear” Bryant or John Madden ever came into his life . Stabler’s high school coach anointed him with “The Snake” when he won several games late in the 4th quarter by scrambling his way thru the defenses zigging and zagging his way around after pass receivers were covered up . Due to constant knee problems and a late night routine that Joe Namath would be proud of Stabler became known for his passing skills late in his career .

# 1 – ” The Frig” – Chicago “Bears” defensive tackle William ” The Refrigerator ” Perry reportedly loved ice cream & popsicles and pressured his family as he was growing up to make sure that the refrigerator was stocked well . Personally , I never seen a more athletic nor faster athlete that weighed 350 lbs. plus most of his career . Sadly he now spends his time back in his native South Carolina home battling diabetes and weight issues at a still rather tender age of 52 , recently seen a TV special on him and he struggled to walk 15 to 20 feet at a time .

Honorable Mention nicknames : “The Golden Boy” – Paul Hornung ; “Prime Time” – Deion Sanders ; “Sweetness” – Walter Payton ; “White Shoes” – Billy Johnson ; “Broadway Joe” – Joe Willy Namath ; “The Bus” – Jerome Bettis ; “Night Train” – Dick Lane ; “The Galloping Ghost” – Red Grange

Many Storylines Are Unfolding For The Kentucky Sports Fan

Remember how hot it was in those quaint little old high school gyms of the 50′s & 60′s with those old pot belly stoves that kept it 90 degrees inside while it was freezing outside , well , I’ve traveled the Commonwealth from Hazard to Lexington to Northern Ky. to Louisville in the last few weeks and at no point has it been within 15 degrees of those old gyms , it’s hot folks . So , while we wait on September and the start of football season and a little more comfortable weather let’s look at a few items of interest to think about before 2011 ends .

Here is 10 sports questions for the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s sports fans to ponder as we enter the 2nd half of 2011 with a little tongue in cheek involved in a couple of the questions :

1. Why wasn’t Reds closer Co Co Cordero asked by any of the NL home run hitting contestants to pitch to them in the MLB Home Run hitting contest ?

2. After spending the past month and a half on the AAU and KHSAA team camp trail evaluating H.S. basketball players I never heard the word tall used at any point by any coach or recruiting service guru in describing a player , all of a sudden players are only long . What do they do now lay them down and measure them with a yard stick ? Do we really have to change the most basic terminology of each sport ?

3. Do you think Richie Farmer in his wildest dreams ever thought the news media in this state would turn on him the way it has ?

4. Has their ever been a more popular BASKETBALL coach than John Calipari at this juncture in his career at UK who hasn’t won an NCAA championship ?

5. There has been a lot of talk by Big Blue Nation about not spending money on UK football at the same rate as UK basketball which flames the question , will the new scoreboards & renovations at Commonwealth Stadium enhance the so called fan experience enough to give “Joker” Phillips and Mitch Barnhart a pass if they have a 2nd losing season in a row ? Oh yes , don’t forget the new uniforms .

6. Will the new UK president and his wife escourt those stellar academic award winners onto the field at Commonwealth Stadium at the end of the 1st quarter and during the 1st TV time out at Rupp this coming year ? It literally sucks the life right out of the fan base at both sites especially Rupp Arena .

7. Will there ever be a sporting event in this state to annually rival the Ky. Derby ? I don’t think so , forget it NASCAR fans . Basketball & Horses are a way of life in Kentucky , has been for many years and I don’t see it changing .

8. Will the Louisville Sports Authority and the folks at the KFC Yum Center make a pitch to the KHSAA to bring the popular Sweet 16 State Tourney to the River City ?

9. How did Vanderbilt’s new football coach and staff reap commitments from two 4 star recruits ( Josh Dawson & Brian Kimbro ) at the impact positions of running back and defensive end and beat schools like Georgia , Notre Dame , LSU , Nebraska , Va. Tech and South Carolina in the process who had all offered ?

10. Will the City of Richmond and the EKU administration with it’s new synthetic tartan surface at Roy Kidd Stadium ever get off their ??? and make a serious bid to host the KHSAA Football State Finals ? A lot of H.S sports fans across central , northern , and eastern ky. are getting tired of traveling across the state to Bowling Green .

Eddie Ford’s Ky. Hoopfest

Spent last weekend in Louisville and got to see a lot of good high school basketball players in several age groups from across the Commonwealth and the entire nation at Eddie Ford’s 30th Annual Ky. Hoopfest in the Ky. Fair & Exposition Center’s South Wing . Ford’s event is the oldest of it’s kind in the nation and annually attracts well over 300 college coaches and recruiters . Also , if you want to know anything about or pick up any breaking news on Kentucky high school hoops whether it be coaching changes , player transfers , etc. it’s a must event to attend each July .

Their were at least a couple high profile players playing on one of the all star AAU teams from in state representing all 16 KHSAA regions . Seems to be a lot of good young players in the 8th , 9th, and 10th grade getting ready to come on the scene . Listed below are some names that you may or may not have seen or heard of at this point that I predict will be hot players in the next couple years :

Braxton Beverly – Perry Central – 8th

Cameron Justice – Knott Central (Formerly East Ridge) 9th

Evan Hall – Knott Central – 9th

Charles Johnson – Lafayette – 10th

Shane Hall – Johnson Central – 10th

Justin Johnson – Sheldon Clark – 10th

Tyler Black – Mason Co. – 10th

Jackson Davis – Lafayette – 10th

Wesley Noble – Breathitt Co. – 10th

( all of these players above were varsity starters on their respective teams last year )

Several older players who have already committed to a Div. 1 – A team and will be entering their senior year this fall were on display as well :

Derek Willis – Bullitt East – ( Purdue commitment )

Adam Wing – Rowan Co. – ( Oklahoma State commitment )

Two players who have went under the radar with out of state college coaches and recruiters in the past but seem to have gained some respect this summer were 6′ 6″ Matt Day – Buckhorn and 6′ 4″ Taylor Barnette – Lex. Christian

Has Transfers Or Early Entries To NBA Cost UK NCAA Championships

Pre Season Football Magazines Out On News Stands

By – Ira D. Combs

Syndicated Columnist

As we drift thru the lazy hazy hot days of summertime I find myself occasionally drifting into the past dreaming of lost chances at UK championships .

You could debate that the greed of a dollar bill or more playing time have both cost the Cats another banner or two , but then again if one has never had even the necessities of everyday life is it really greed .

So in hindsight you could give a soft mulligan for those who left for money and the NBA , right , well maybe , most of those who left UK really had their own individual agenda .

Regardless of the reason what if this player or that player or especially a certain small group of players from the many early entrants UK has put into the NBA draft stayed for another year or sometimes two or three more years would these ex Cats have produced Kentucky basketball with more than the present (7) NCAA Championships which has them in 2nd place all time behind UCLA and Coach John Wooden and his 11 NCAA championships .

Early entries into the NBA didn’t really come into the main stream picture until the late 80′s and early 90′s so the question is did past transfers who left the program cost the Cats more realistic opportunities to capture that coveted NCAA crown thru the years .

When did it all begin ? Much earlier than you might think .

After a few hours of research and the help of my brother Oscar who has a few years of knowledge and more importantly personal memory of Kentucky basketball I found out that the transfer scenarios really started in the early 40′s .

Anybody remember Bob Brannum from the 1943 – 44 Cats , well , it seems as though he is the first noteworthy Wildcat who left Adolph Rupp’s flock .

Brannum averaged 12.1 ppg and lead UK to a 19 – 2 record that year and was a consensus 1st team All American at UK his freshman year by the Sporting News , Pic Magazine , and Converse Inc. then went off to defend the Red , White , & Blue in WW 2 for two years then returned for the 1946 – 47 season and found a few new recruits by the name of Ralph Beard , Alex Groza , Wah Wah Jones , and Kenny Rollins had made the scene and his average dropped to 4.9 . Ole Bob was off to Michigan State to finish up his collegiate career but we can’t blame him for costing the Cats any championships because Adolph faired pretty well in the late 40′s and early 50′s .

Later in the 50′s one of Rupp’s most talented recruits from eastern ky. Bob Tallent left the Bluegrass after falling out with Rupp for George Washington University but again you can’t blame Tallent because by this time and during this era UK was the premier basketball program in the USA . You could rap up today’s Duke , NC , and Kansas all into one and you would have Kentucky of the 50′s , they were the Yankees of college basketball during this decade .

This takes us into the modern age of the late 60′s or even closer to the 70′s . Remember Danny Hall from eastern ky. or Randy Noll of northern ky. or big burly 6′ 11″ Chuck Aleksenis or one of the states most high profile basketball recruits ever Todd May of Virgie who left because Kenny Walker and company was just too much to contend for playing time with . Did Dwight Anderson’s transfer to USC cost Coach Hall a shot at another championship . What about more recent transfers like Chris Mills , Leron Ellis , Rashaad Carruth , Roderick Rhodes , or one of Tubby’s first mistakes at UK in the recruiting process when he brought Jason Parker on campus only to constantly have discipline problems with Parker until he and “Tubby” finally separated ways .

Would any of these players have given UK the edge to get over the hump had they stuck it out to reach that perch atop the NCAA throne ? We’ll never know .

Personally , I think there is a better case to be made for those who left the campus life for the bright lights and deep pockets of the NBA .

Would Rex Chapman had he stayed a full four years earned UK another title ? It’s highly doubtful , but it sure would have been an entertaining couple of years , I wonder what Rex & Rick Pitino would have been like together at Rupp Arena . Now their would have been a popularity contest like this state has never seen .

Would either of the following players Jamal Mashburn , Ron Mercer , or Antwan Walker have helped Rick Pitino produce another NCAA crown had they completed their eligibility . Even more interestingly would Rick Pitino himself have produced more NCAA hardware for his own throne room had he not left UK for the NBA , but that’s a whole other story in itself .

Would Kaleena Azubuike , Rajon Rondo , or Randolph Morris have helped “Tubby” garner another championship and more importantly sedated the restless commonwealth to stay off his back and henceforth would he still be at the Joe Craft Center if any of these three would have finished out their eligibility .

Let’s skip the next two year era and blame it on Mitch Barnhart , ah heck , let’s give our A.D. a mulligan on that one too because he did recover nicely with John Calipari .

Which brings us up to date with the most recent two year scenario .

Would Jodie Meeks perimeter shooting had he stayed at UK his senior year been enough against West Virginia to put Calipari and the Cats in the Final Four for a shot at a championship in Cal’s initial season . I don’t think anyone would argue that had the Fab Five Wildcats of John Wall & company stayed just one more year we would have banner # 8 hanging in Rupp Arena at present day .

So there it is you make the decision did past transfers or early NBA entries cost UK . Personally , I doubt UK would have 11 championships today like Wooden and UCLA had all the above players fell UK’s way in those years but I don’t think there is any question they would be a lot closer than they are now with 7 championships .

Then again what about the positive transfers , yeah that’s right , we’ve had a few to flock to Lexington as well . Think Kyle Macy , Derek Anderson , and Travis Ford to name a few . I doubt seriously that UK would have won the 1978 championship without Kyle Macy on the floor nor would Rick Pitino of won in 1996 without Derek Anderson coming on board from Ohio State nor would have the Cats launched themselves into the 1993 Final Four without Travis Ford’s perimeter shooting skills .

Pre Season Football Magazines Out

Most all of the 2011 pre season football magazines are out on the magazine racks across the nation especially in the SEC towns as of this date .

Athlon’s and Lindy’s led the charge beating most everyone to press and have been on most news stands for at least two weeks now but neither paints much of a bright picture for the Cats although Athlon’s did project in one article that the Cats would keep their bowl streak alive with another 6 – 6 season and predicted they would be matched up with South Florida in the BBVA Compass Bowl again .

Sr. LB Danny Trevathan and Jr. OL Larry Warford have garnered the only love thrown UK’s way with the sports writers and recruiting gurus with both being projected as anywhere from 1st or 2nd team All SEC to as high as 3rd team All American by Sporting News .

However , there have been some kudos thrown the Cats way with a few of their incoming recruits by several of the veteran SEC writers and recruiting services . One recruit that caught my attention last Feb. on signing day but he hasn’t been mentioned much until just recently is WR Darryl Collins of Gadsden , Ala. who according to sources close to me is turning a few heads in 7 on 7 workouts over at the Nutter Training Center .

Here is a quote by veteran SEC Gainesville Sun staff writer Kevin Brockway while he was doing a column on five freshman recruits who could make an impact in the SEC in 2011 ;

” Gadsden , Ala. wide receiver Darryl Collins should get plenty of opportunities to make plays in Kentucky coach “Joker” Phillips high scoring offense . After former Wildcat WR and all purpose threat Randall Cobb decided to leave college early for the NFL draft Collins changed his original commitment from Alabama to the Wildcats ” .

Also , both incoming Georgia running backs Josh Clemons & Marcus Caffey have received some ink in various publications as making an impact as freshman . Caffey was rated as the 27th best prospect in Georgia and 37th best running back prospect in the entire nation by www.rivals.com one of the top 3 recruiting services in college football circles . One incoming recruits name that has been mysteriously missing from most publications as far as making an immediate contribution is SS Glenn Faulkner who actually was the Cats only four start recruit on signing day last Feb.

My favorite pre season football publication is published Darryl Bird and the guys over at the Cats Pause and yes it is out as well just visit your local Wal Mart magazine rack or your local pharmacies magazine rack and I’m sure you will be able to pick one up .

Keep the faith folks SEC football is just around the corner and the 2011 version of Wildcat Football media day is coming up in about four weeks on the first friday in August and then we will be back on a weekly basis with this column and all other coverage of UK athletics .

You can go online to www.combsbrothersonkysports.com for more coverage of UK football and basketball as well as KHSAA football and basketball .

UK Football Not As Bleak For 2011 As National Media Suggest

By – Ira D. Combs

Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

While I am on record in recent days myself in suggesting that this coming fall may not be one of UK’s most memorable pigskin seasons I’ll also be the first to take a stand for “Joker” Phillips and “Operation Win” in season # 2 in that the picture that several national media members and outlets are painting isn’t near as bleak as some think .

This team still has a decent shot at pulling out 6 wins and remaining bowl eligible to keep the one positive streak going they have .

However , Chris Low from ESPN.COM who by the way presently resides in Knoxville , Tenn. doesn’t see a very bright future this fall especially for the Cats offense .

Low arrived in K-town a couple years ago after spending 10 years in Nashville , Tenn. where he covered UT & SEC football for The (Nashville) Tennessean and to add to Mr. Low’s ugly history of witnessing UK football he was born and raised in South Carolina . So , he does have a rather one sided opinion of witnessing UK quarterbacks and teams over the past few years having seen for the most part the UT game and a few scattered South Carolina games in recent years which is probably clouding up his observations a tad but in all reality what he has seen is all he has to go on .

Low has jump started the national charge once again by stating that UK football is headed into those deep SEC waters with a quarterback Morgan Newton that he says is 10th on a list of ……………… yes 10 and if that’s not a bad omen don’t forget unless commissioner Mike Slive has thrown two SEC teams under the bus to the NCAA to keep The Vols out of the NCAA jailhouse there are still 12 teams in the SEC .

Upon first hearing this I immediately thought something don’t click here , so I did some research and realized this isn’t as bad as it appears in Low’s ESPN.COM column . No , I’m not the eternal optimist for UK football but there are some items that need to be addressed before we all start throwing rope to both Newton & Phillips to keep Operation Win a float .

# 1 – First and foremost two of the bottom five quarterbacks on Low’s list play for the same school , LSU , ( surely Newton is better than a backup ) and two of the others reside in Gainesville and Tuscaloosa then Newton at # 10 . Now , real quick tell me the last time you can remember going into an SEC football season that Alabama , Florida , and LSU didn’t have a quarterback rated in the Top 5 of the SEC . I can’t remember that year personally …………….. this may be the year that quarterback play in the SEC isn’t a weekly feature .

# 2 – This point has no effect on Newton or his competence or skill level as a college quarterback but it may be a hidden asset for UK’s defense . Did anyone notice that Ole Miss , Vanderbilt , and Auburn didn’t even rate a qb on Low’s list . UK has Ole Miss & Miss. State at home this year and Vanderbilt is also on the schedule as always but in Nashville . That’s three pivotal SEC opponents that won’t throw tremendous quarterback fear into the face of Rick Minters new defensive schemes if Low is correct in his assessment .

# 3 – Low made no mention of the valuable experience that Newton got year before last when he lead UK to those big road wins against Georgia and Auburn . Yes , I’m aware Newton’s passing stats in those two wins weren’t sterling but he does have some success and experience in his past to build on .

If this wasn’t enough karma from Low just days after the quarterback fiasco brought Big Blue Nation gloom and doom the “Guru of SEC sports writers” followed up with a bashing of the UK running backs predicting them as 12th best in the 12 team SEC for this upcoming season . So I’m guessing UK will bottom out the SEC in most all offensive statistics based on Chris Low’s evaluation skills .

For my money Morgan Newton may not put up Tim Couch or Jared Lorenson numbers but he won’t be last in the SEC with Randy Sanders schooling him .

As for the running back bashing those guys simply haven’t been on the field yet because the depth chart is now stocked full of incoming true freshmen , a raw talent in red shirt freshman Brandon Gainer , and one shifty sophomore Raymond Sanders who can tote the mail and Mike Summers offensive line will see that the running game doesn’t finish last in their statistical category .

The bottom line is at the end of the day or in this case UK’s upcoming football season we will all look back and see that these two positions won’t be the lone reason this UK team succeeds or fails or treads in water all fall .

SEC games are won in the trenches on both sides of the ball , always has , always will .

Does It Really Matter When UK & UL Play Football

Here we go again for the umpteenth time in the last 15 years or so . Either the media or U of L or both are complaining again about how or if the UK – U of L game is televised .

When will the sports fans and media in this state understand that it’s not a hot topic to UK when the Louisville game is played in football nor if it’s the 1st or 3rd weekend of the season or how and when it’s televised .

For the last time UK is not responsible for getting U of L football national recognition .

The new SEC TV contract with ESPN and CBS provides UK football all the publicity it needs to grow it’s program , ( one game a year does not make or break a Div. 1 football program especially an SEC program ) .

Had UK not agreed to start the series in the early 90′s U of L would not have Papa Johns Stadium and without the stadium do you really believe Louisville would have been invited into even the Big East . Yes , UK football in the early 90′s was in one of it’s darkest hours and needed the Louisville game to jump start ticket sales but it always had the SEC to fall back on financially and would have eventually survived the Bill Curry era . Louisville football on the other hand was treading water and having moderate success at the time but was at the crossroads as far as growing their program into solid Div. 1-A status and sorely needed the UK series to provide fodder that they could compete and needed a new stadium to do so .

UK obliged and has been rewarded with Louisville being nothing but a thorn in UK’s side in the publicity department when discussing the particulars of the series when contracts have been drawn up every four years .

By the way for all those who stated that by UK – UL starting a football series it would drastically improve high school football in the state take a look at the items I researched below :

# 1 – The Commonwealth’s high schools were producing annually anywhere from 12 to 18 Div. 1-A college football players in the early 90′s yet still after almost 20 years of UK – UL football the state is still producing 12 to 18 Div. 1-A college football players each year .

# 2 – If it’s still that important that these two universities must play football for the high school programs to grow and prosper then someone explain to me how we had 284 high schools playing football in 1993 yet today we have only 205 high schools playing football although school consolidation and KERA must take their fair share of blame in this department .

# 3 – This item is a bad reflection on both UK and UL . If both schools who from the get go said they wanted this series to help grow high school football then why hasn’t either hosted the high school football state finals for the past two years and it appears won’t for coming years either .

Playing this series has done nothing for high school football nor has it enhanced UK football in the least but it jump started Louisville football squarely into solid Div. 1 – A status and for that what has Louisville done over the years .

Nothing but throw up anything and everything it can think of negatively toward UK football .

Personally , I wish UK would drop Louisville and look seriously into starting a series with a Va. Tech or Penn State or Miami of Florida , at least on the years they would play a team with this type tradition and national recognition it would mean something if a win was produced and in the years of a loss it would come without a complete dismantling of the program by the media which is what happened when a Louisville loss produced negative fodder from all angles since the series started in the early 90′s .

I’m betting that these type schools wouldn’t cry over a date to play either or if it’s on ESPNU , ESPN 2 , or The Disney Channel .

Louisville and the local media are most likely going to be a constant thorn in your side UK no matter what direction you go in , it’s time you do something in the scheduling department that will enhance UK football even if it’s a gamble of sorts in getting bowl eligible .

You’ve now got the TV money from the SEC contract to fall back on let the Big East and Louisville carry their own weight for a few seasons .

Piecoro On 2011 UK Football Team

On a recent visit to cover a Reds home stand at Great American Ball Park I had a chance to spend some time with one of my favorite UK personalities Jeff Piecoro who has a summer gig with Fox Sports Ohio where he host their pre and post game shows for the the Reds TV Network . Piecoro of course played football at UK back in the day and presently is Tom Leach’s side kick on UK’s radio team . He paints a little better picture for UK football that does Chris Low of ESPN.COM although he was reluctant to speculate on an actual record for this fall Piecoro seemed somewhat excitied about UK’s defensive possibilities saying he can see this team as being similar to a couple teams he played on when the defense started the year out holding the fort down and keeping the Cats competitive in games with a chance to win in the 2nd half of games early in the year while the offense and their young backs and receivers gain valuable confidence and game experience for the SEC stretch run in late October and November where the Cats should have a few SEC games winnable at home .

Piecoro got the opportunity to see the spring game and a couple other practices and was impressed with the change Rick Minter made by moving Winston Guy up closer to the line for more run coverage and blitz packages and away from a few pass coverage responsibilities . Piecoro also mentioned that he expects the Cats defensive line to be stronger than the last two years with Mister Cobble and Donte Rumph with one year of game experience under their belt and Collins Ukwu and Mark Crawford seasoned veterans now .

Kick Off or not to Kick Off

That quaint little tidbit that Georgia’s coach Mark Richt and Rutgers coach got started a few days ago about dropping kick offs in college football will never make it to the rules committee to be voted on . CBS and ESPN will nix that thought process and probably already have . Got to have time after a TD is scored for those two and three minute million dollar commercials to run and specialty teams meeting with their coaches and lining up for the kickoffs provide the time not to mention time for those networks to showcase their own little Queen’s of the Gridiron for those ridiculous 15 second coach interviews during the same time span of the game broadcast .

But one wonders would watching a football game without kickoffs be like watching a basketball game without all those jump balls we had to deal with until the possession arrows were established , I don’t think so kickoffs produce points and points produce excitement .

What are they going to do to start the contest just lay the football on the 50 yard line before each game and have a scrum to decide possession henceforth the old southern phrase made famous years ago when you had two bad teams playing on the same football field ………… ” looks like a bunch of mules fighting over the last turnip in the garden ” .

I can’t see football without kickoffs in my lifetime but I never thought I would have to pay for a drink of water or watch a man marry another man on TV either .

Director / Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

Did anybody notice that a certain Big East football team had Five players drafted in last weeks NFL draft . No , not the one Big Blue Nation loves to hate on a daily basis .

The one that embarrassed UK in last January’s BBVA Compass Bowl .

Yes , Pittsburgh that team that everyone said UK laid an egg against , well , it turns out that maybe and it hurts to say this but as the old saying goes ” sometimes the truth hurts , because it’s simply the truth ” . Maybe , the Pitt “Panthers” were simply better than UK . Pittsburgh had five players drafted into the NFL professional ranks last week with one each in the 1st and 2nd round and three more in the 5th & 6th rounds .

This is another confirmation that UK may not have cabbaged on those first two 8 – 5 bowl winning seasons in the recruiting process like everyone thought , it’s also a testament that since only Randall Cobb was drafted from UK that the overall recruit that has been brought in too the Nutter Training Center since those first two bowl winning seasons isn’t at the talent level we all thought either .

Henceforth , this is possibly why UK has put up two 6 – 6 regular season campaigns in the last three years and of more importance we may all now know the real reason that Rich Brooks chalked it in .

Brooks saw that he had done about all he could do and envisioned a slide backwards coming .

How Does “Joker” Circle The Wagons

It is no secret that in this new day and age the UK football fan will not tolerate 6 win seasons very long .

With the money spent by todays college football fan for the fan experience to be successful more is expected by “Joker” Phillips and his troops or the seats will start being vacated on those beautiful fall afternoons in the bluegrass and we all know what happens to coaches when seats become empty on game days .

Simply put , I don’t think today’s new era UK football fan will have the patience nor loyalty to spend today’s money like the old fans of the 60′s , 70′s , 80′s and 90′s .

This September “Joker” Phillips will enter his 2nd season as the man in charge of UK football and in most situations that is not a year that is critical for a coach taking over a program . But Phillips has been a keen adviser for Brooks since he stepped on campus and has put his own stamp on the program much more than most assistant coaches with other college football programs .

The “Joker” Phillips era will be scrutinized much quicker and closer than most 2nd year head coaches .

To Phillips credit he was the lead recruiter for the first five or six years of the Brooks era and actually turned the program in the right direction when he became the offensive coordinator in the middle of the Brooks era .

However , I myself have heard several longtime UK football donors who have privately stated in the past year that “Joker” Phillips may have been more productive and important to UK football in his role as offensive coordinator and lead recruiter than as the Head Coach . This doesn’t mean that “Joker” can’t be or won’t be a successful head football coach on the college level . It simply means that at UK his impact and importance to this particular program may have been what he was doing when Brooks departed .

To be painfully honest I can see where those thoughts may actually have some merit .

Todays big time Div. 1 head football coaches have so many daily responsibilities to perform in and out of season that have no significant importance come game day . Attending speaking engagements at various fund raising functions as well as civic responsibilities and full filling those many required media conferences at various times during the season no matter how appealing you are to those in attendance has no significance to his teams play on game day .

Phillips made several ground breaking and program changing inroads for UK football in several southern states to get UK football to the level that it’s at today .

I sometimes wonder if he can continue the upward trend for UK football in the future by spending all his time on the banquet tour with the high rollers and sugar daddy’s of UK football instead of on the recruiting trail and running the roads of southern high school football .

Getting the Jimmy’s and Joe’s on campus are much more important for a UK than drawing up the X’s and O’s on gameday .

Every college football program has to sell a recruit on something and at a UK you have to build a friendship and trust with a recruit by a coach who can relate to the modern day athlete and bond with them over a period of time .

You can’t do that unless you spend a lot of time on the road especially with those 7 or 8 prime recruits that you target every year . In the recruiting world the head coach has to have the ability to go in the home to close the deal but it’s that bonding relationship that the lead recruiter builds with that recruit on a weekly basis over a period of time that gets the head coach in the home and “Joker” was a master mind in the early to middle Rich Brooks years in getting UK’s name on the map .

It appears Phillips is trying to groom Tea Martin to take that role over I just hope Big Blue Nation will provide enough time for “Joker” to put the finishing touches on his early work .

Coach Cal Lining Up The Troops For Year # 3

It now appears that Coach John Calipari’s roster for the upcoming 2011 – 2012 season is set barring any mid or late summer surprises ( See Trevor Lacey sweepstakes ) .

As I predicted in this column a week after the Final Four Brandon Knight is off to the big bucks of the NBA although he may have to fend for himself for a few months until the collective bargaining agreement between the NBA players association and the NBA owners has been settled . But he will be handsomely rewarded once those bulging vaults are reopened and the season starts .

Somewhat of a mild surprise that Terrence Jones is staying at UK for another year but he could be handsomely rewarded himself a year from now if he uses next season as a building block not to mention next years lottery picks will be under the new collective bargaining agreement which I’m sure will be much more lucrative .

As for Deandre Liggins and his surprise announcement late sunday night that he will take a plunge into the upcoming NBA draft , I wonder sometimes who is in the dark the most the college player or the NBA player personnel folks .

Life’s full of surprises and I think Liggins is about to get one .

Spring Football Correction

Thanks to UK football media relations director Tony Neely I found out the reason talented red shirt freshman running back Brandon Gainer was a no show at the spring Blue – White game . Neely told me in an e-mail response to our last syndicated column that Brandon Gainer is alive and well at the Nutter Training Center and in good standing with coach “Joker” Phillips and his coaching staff .

Gainer was simply held out of the Blue – White game because he injured his right shoulder in a blocking drill for the running backs on the wednesday before the scrimmage and the coaches simply felt like it was best to hold him out of the scrimmage in fear of making the injury worse .

Spring Football Ends But Still Many Questions Remain To Be Answered

By – Ira D. Combs * Director / Syndicated Columnist * Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

Another spring football season is behind the gridiron Cats yet very few questions were answered concerning this falls edition of UK football , at least that’s what most of the vast Diehard UK football fan base thinks according to the responses posted on most internet sites , chat lines , etc. the 24 hours after the spring game .

You can add yours truly to that list as well .

However , UK football coach “Joker” Phillips stood tall and straight faced in the Wildcat Den minutes after the Cats spring football Blue – White game concluded and was quoted as saying ” I expect this team to stay in the SEC football title chase this coming fall longer than it’s ever been since he’s been at UK when he come on board with Rich Brooks several years ago ” .

With that being said I understand that todays college football coach must use the media at times to build confidence in his troops .

But that’s a mighty bold statement for a head coach to make in his second year when he just posted the schools first losing season in five years , graduated it’s best quarterback and running back and lost it’s best overall football player thru an early entry to the NFL .

All that , then looking straight ahead at a 2011 schedule that has his first three SEC games against Florida , LSU , and South Carolina with the latter two being in Tiger Stadium and Williams Brice Stadium .

I’m thinking exactly how does he meet that ( staying in the SEC race longer objective ) ahh , it just hit me he was thinking the Cats will run the table with the three non conference games in September to build confidence then slip by their SEC lower level brothers in Mississippi since they are both at home this year and then in what has become the annual ( Remember November Campaign ) whip Vanderbilt and it’s new sacrificial coach then sneek up on another overhyped Georgia team then ………….. ( Dare I say it ) yes break the Vol Streak .

Sounds like a plan , a familiar plan , but when will it ever come true . Not this fall .

More on Coach Phillips and football in general in my next off season column .

Other Football News & Notes

I didn’t see any of red shirt freshman phenom Brandon Gainer during the Blue – White Scrimmage . Gainer came on campus last year as a prized recruit out of the extremely talented south Florida area with glowing stats as a RB but was ask to set out due to Derrick Locke being set to be the feature back and Fr. all purpose back Raymond Sanders being groomed for backup duty responsibilities for Locke .

One would think with his reputation coming on campus and Locke graduating that his name would surface in some capacity by the end of the spring .

No one I talked to saturday in the media who has been around Nutter Center all spring had a clue . Hopefully this column will bring a response from someone inside the program .

Reportedly “Joker’s” former UK teammate and close friend Mark Higgs who was Gainer’s asst. coach in Florida hand delivered Gainer to Phillips and UK thru a tough and lengthy recruiting process . I’m betting Gainer nor Higgs expected the present scenario coming out of his red shirt season and his first spring game .

Since our last column the UK – WKU game scenario has been finalized . Official date is (Thurs.) September 1st and kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M. with ESPNU providing live national TV coverage and according to the new contract that UK signed with WKU the Hilltoppers will host the game in Nashville at LP Field which is the home of the NFL Tennessee Titans .

With the change in date from saturday to a week night thursday I’m wondering how much that will affect the travel plans of Big Blue Nation and WKU’s fan base as well . Not to mention UK will play Vanderbilt later on in the season in Nashville and let’s not forget the fact that UK has played at LP Field for a couple bowl games in recent years as well .

Throw in the economy and a live TV telecast to overcome . Ouch !!!!

It will be the season opener but I’m betting that WKU would be thrilled with a crowd of 40,000 to 45,000 .

Coach Cal & BBN Waiting On NBA Decisions

Let’s give Coach Cal a high five for swaying Doron Lamb back to the Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge and Rupp Arena for another year . Can’t help but think it’s a win win situation for both individuals .

Now on to step two with Brandon Knight , Terrence Jones , and Deandre Liggins yes Deandre Liggins officially entering their name into the pool for NBA evaluations .

It says here that step three will result in Knight and Jones ending up as two NBA lottery picks in the June draft , sure hope they don’t get burnt later on with an extended lockout .

That leaves us with the final step of what has become the annual UK basketball off season delimma on who will wear the Blue and White next season .

Where does Liggins career path go ? That’s a bigger mystery to me than any scenario you can paint for Knight , Jones , or Josh Harrellson for that matter

Don’t know who Liggins is taking advice from these days but then again how many out there thought Daniel Orton would be drafted in the 1st round last year when the season ended .

Not me .

Don’t go the defensive route either trying to explain or defend his NBA aspirations . Name me one defensive player that any NBA franchise has drafted in past years for that sole reason who was under 7′ tall .

If Liggins is truly wanting to earn money for his new fatherhood responsibilities my advice is head to Europe , otherwise stay in school for your senior year . Something tells me he nor his new baby will want for food or clothing this coming winter .

That corner / wing shot he hit inside the last minute against North Carolina that put UK in this years Final Four should provide many opportunities for him to curb any hunger pains for many years . Now don’t go down that road of UK players getting free meals from Lexington restaurants . I’m thinking coupons you know those type that the students occasionally obtain thru various advertising sources .

He is a student – athlete at least that’s what our friends from the NCAA calls them .

Personal Note

This column officially ends our fifth year of covering UK basketball & football as well as KHSAA football and basketball for our Tri State Sports Media Service . It’s been a blast and Harold and I are already making plans for some additions to our website as well as maybe taking a crack at a new yearbook type publication on basketball .

While it’s possibly been the best five years of my adult life I have my 40th high school reunion coming up in a few weeks before our next column and I’m dreading it immensely .

Yes , 40 years ago , remember when Dan Issel , Mike Pratt , and Mike Casey had the Cats # 1 and were finishing up their sterling careers under the leadership of Adolph Rupp and when Pete Rose & Johnny Bench were starting a dynasty called The Big Red Machine and yours truly was a svelt 169 lb. 5′ 10″ point guard for the Dilce Combs “Panthers” .

Yes , I know what some of you who haven’t known me all those years are thinking but I do have a high school yearbook and a few photos to prove it .

Life’s been a ball I have no complaints , I’ve been blessed more than I deserve . Hopefully , we’ll all have a few more special Wildcat victories going down that glory road that Coach Rupp started back in the 40′s .

Cats Majical Run Ends In Houston - ( “Joker” says quarterbacks are improving in spring drills )

By – Ira D. Combs
Syndicated Columnist
Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

April 2nd , Reliant Stadium – Houston , Texas U Conn – 56 UK – 55

One point shy of playing for another NCAA championship . Ask yourself did you really ever believe at any point between Oct. 15th and the Elite 8 weekend that would happen .

Relax Big Blue Nation it won’t be 13 more years before Coach Cal leads your beloved Cats back to the Final Four . His first year it was an Elite 8 appearance , this year it was a Final Four trip , hopefully his third year will be the charm but rest assured it won’t be 13 more years before UK goes to another one .

Why ?

Because another wave of McDonald’s All Americans stand nearby and ready to invade Rupp Arena , it would help to hold on to one or two each year for a second year .

According to all successful college basketball coaches one of the golden rules in college basketball is defense wins championships . If so then you could say that cold shooting nights especially in the first half that get you down early and missed free throws down the stretch in the second half can cost you championships as well . When your at Kentucky and you hold your opponent to 56 points in most cases you trot back to the locker room with a win . Only in a rare game does this not happen but last saturdays lower bracket NCAA semifinal game at Reliant Stadium in Houston was a rare game for UK as far as this season goes . Even in those 6 last minute road conference losses UK shot better than they did against Conneticut .

Bottom line is you can analyze to the max , point fingers at players for forcing shots , and / or place blame in Coach Cal’s bench coaching all you want to but the loss is simply due to the ball not falling thru the hoop one more time than it did . It’s as simple as that . UK rode the coattails of it’s multi talented freshman phenoms offensive talents all season long with an occasional outburst from upper classmen Miller , Liggins , and Harrellson but in the end it came down to one cold shooting night by all of them to kick them out of the Big Dance and send them back to the Joe Craft Center to reload and plan for next year .

If ever a college basketball team overachieved the 2010 – 2011 version of UK basketball did and then some . My hats off to the entire team and coaching staff .

Who Stays and Who Heads off to the NBA

It is really of a moot point to even guess or project who or if any UK underclassmen enter their name into the NBA draft ( if they have one ) but because our readers love to talk and scheme up next season I will take an educated stab at what could materialize . First of all you have to think like a teen ager who has never had any money in his life but all of a sudden you’ve got these ( Leaches called agents ) lurking around your whereabouts and no Coach Cal nor his staff can stay with these players 24 / 7 they just have to hope for their best judgement in these matters .

Then factor in a modern day NBA that drafts strictly on ” potential ” .

With that being said I can’t see Brandon Knight and Doron Lamb both coming back with Marquis Teague coming on board . I’ll guess Lamb returns . Terrence Jones is gone to the NBA as sure as there is spring showers in April . That leaves Miller , Liggins , and Vargas as a uniquely large 3 man senior class for 2011 – 2012 to help baptize UK’s incoming class of McDonald’s All Americans into UK basketball .

My projected starting five and rotation of players is :

Gd. – Marquis Teague – Fr. – 6′ 2″
Gd. – Doron Lamb – Soph. – 6′ 3″
Wing Forward – Darius Miller – Sr. – 6′ 6″
Wing Forward – Michael Gilchrist – Fr. – 6′ 7″
F / C – Anthony Davis – Fr. – 6′ 10″

Super Perimeter Sub = Deandre Liggins – 6′ 7″
Interior Subs at F / C = Kyle Wiltjer – Fr. – 6′ 9″
Eloy Vargas – Sr. – 6′ 10″

Jon Hood , Stacey Poole , and Jarod Polson all will be improved and Hood made see a few more minutes than this year if no other perimeter recruits are brought in .

Just as much talent , size , and athleticism as either one of the last two teams , maybe a better shooting team than Cal’s first year but just a step below the shooters of this year .

Credibility of Press Corps

Is Deandre Liggins ready for the NBA or maybe European Pro basketball ?

Evidently a reporter for the Houston Sun thinks so because Liggins was ask saturday if this was his last game in a UK uniform by a reporter who identified himself as such to the NCAA proctor who coordinates all NCAA post game interviews for coaches and that famous term the student – athletes . On first thought I wondered how anyone who supposedly has covered college basketball this season could ask such a ridiculous question about Liggins future .

Then a few items of interest came to my attention :

# 1 – Deandre Liggins became a father for the first time in the past year . Money is needed to support his fatherly responsibilities and if Daniel Orton was ready for the NBA then I can go out on a limb and say that Liggins is ready to produce in the Euro Professional League .

# 2 – All those NBA gurus who have said for years that defense is abundant in the NBA but never ever draft a defensive player unless they are 7′ 0″ or bigger may be about to pull the trigger on Liggins who reportedly is the best lock down perimeter defensive player in college basketball .

# 3 – Or the Houston Sun simply has some credibility issues with it’s press corps and the guy didn’t know anything about Liggins profile as a college basketball player and was simply trying to jump start a story that he could take credit for and it caught Liggins off guard and he simply responded with the first thing that came to mind .

Personally , I choose to believe # 3 , but we will see in the upcoming weeks how it ends and I’m betting it will be put to rest within days one way or the other .

Final Notes of Interest

# 1 – The Conneticut game was the first game in John Calipari’s short 67 game history that UK held an opponent under 67 points and lost the game .
# 2 – Reliant Stadium is huge and the 75,421 in attendance set an NCAA single game attendance record for a Final Four .
# 3 – Coach Cal is 32 – 13 in the NCAA tournament .
# 4 – Darius Miller has made a 3 point shot in 25 straight games .
# 5 – Josh Harrellson averaged 13.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the five game run of the NCAA tournament .

Joker Phillips says QB’s are Improving In Spring Drills

According to the 2nd year head coach of the UK Wildcats football program , Joker Phillips , his much maligned Jr. quarterback Morgan Newton and his freshman understudy Maxwell Smith have made great strides since they ended the bowl practice season and the inept performance in last January’s BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham , Alabama at historic Legion Field .

Based on media reports coming out of Nutter Center the UK offense is leaning on the guys up front in the offensive line to be the cornerstone of the offense in spring drills early until the new players at the skill positions can get their feet wet and produce some numbers in the pre conference schedule to hopefully piggy back some confidence for the rugged SEC schedule that awaits them .

Jr. quarterback Morgan Newton was handed the qb job to him last November by “Joker” Phillips ( even though he had been bracketed all season with Ryan Mossakowski as # 2 ) so there is no qb controversy this year . Coach Phillips and Morgan Newton will sink or swim together in the fall of 2011 . Let’s hope Newton has improved from his sophomore year as well as Andre Woodson did between his sophomore and junior years . If Soph. RB Raymond Sanders can become an every down back and if the highly touted redshirt freshman running back Brandon Gainer out of Miami , Fla. can become a quality second choice back then it may open up the passing game and we can see those improved passing skills that Coach Phillips is boosting about .

Otherwise the UK offense in 2011 may resemble that old southern phrase that comedian Jerry Clower made famous which is Newton and company may look like ” a bunch of mules fighting over the last turnip in the garden ” at times this fall especially when the SEC rolls around .

There will be some young talent in the skill positions roaming around at Nutter Center this fall but I fear it may be a year away from producing .

Cats Punch Final Four Ticket In Spite Of NCAA Return To Texas For Another Championship Run

It appears that the NCAA selection committee and the NCAA branch that oversees rules and regulations come from the same cloth . One of weak intelligence & accountability .

Ah heck , let’s let that lay for a while and celebrate a little .

In the Big Blue history books your not worthy of a nickname unless you reach a Final Four .

This team needs a name badly and since no one else will step up to the plate I’ll do it but it’s real easy because there is only one nickname for this team .

The Underdog Cats

Oh by the way , take that NCAA we didn’t need Big Enes after all at least not on game day but don’t ever underestimate Josh Harrellson’s development coming directly from playing day in and day out against Enes Kanter . Regardless of who is responsible for “Jorts” turnaround at the end of the day in my mind you can have all the athleticism , length , and all the lateral quickness in a basketball player you want .

I’ll take players with big hearts like “Jorts” and Deandre Liggins and those who can shoot the basketball like Brandon Knight & Doron Lamb and those who have some home grown basketball skills with some heart that knows what it means to wear those eight letters KENTUCKY across their chest like Darius Miller .

I’m especially fond of the smooth shooting perimeter players like Knight and Lamb . Maybe I’m crazy and by myself but I think both are better at this point in their careers than John Wall and Eric Bledsoe were in their first college year last year .

Nothing can correct a turnover on one possession like a three pointer on the next and last years team couldn’t do that .

Just minutes after the final horn went off the East regional clocks in New Jersey the most famous Los Angeles Laker of all time and basketball Hall of Famer Earvin “Majic” Johnson tweeted on his twitter account and posted on his website that if he had to make a call for an NBA franchise it would be a no brainer for him to select one Brandon Knight as this years # 1 overall selection for the NBA draft .

Enjoy the upcoming weekend folks I got a feeling “Majic” ain’t to far off base but never fear Ole Cal has another calvary coming over the hill that ain’t to shabby themselves .

Second Anniversary Produces Different Mood

Don’t ever forget that old time honored saying , ” Life is never as bad as it seems at times nor is it ever as rosy as it appears because when all is said and done most days fall somewhere in the middle ” . That’s true in sports as well as life . Our friends in Knoxville mind want to take solace in this old time saying today as well .

Remember the feeling across the Bluegrass exactly two years ago to the day . It was March 27th , 2008 and a day of gloom and doom for a very proud UK basketball program . It was the day that Lee Todd and Mitch Barnhart finally admitted they had made a mistake and pulled the trigger on firing Billy “Clyde” Gillispie .

Now exactly two years to the day later Coach Cal has lead the proud program back to the promise land of the Final Four and another shot at an NCAA championship .

It was an expensive mistake to start with and an expensive hire that bailed Todd and Barnhart out but it could end up being a bargain in todays high stakes big time college basketball world if Coach Cal keeps bringing in the talent he has the last two years . Only time will tell but you have to admit the future looks about as bright as it ever has .

To be blunt there has never been 3.7 million spent on anything over at the state capital in Frankfort (ESPECIALLY ON KERA) like the 3.7 million spent on Coach Cal by the UKAA , I’ve said it many times in the past there is nothing that uplifts this state like a UK championship run .

We as Kentuckians have been unjustly berated , chastised , and constantly ridiculed on the national media scene for our way of life for many years to the point that it makes most of Kentucky feel inferior to the rest of America but when the Blue and White are hitting on all cylinders we all feel like were equal to anyone because we can identify with our state university and nobody can deny us those precious moments in time .

NCAA Final Four On CBS

Now that we are past the total confusion of the first two weekends impact of the new television package that had college basketball fans scurrying between four different networks to find where there team was playing we can all settle down to what we are used to seeing over the past 10 – 15 years a Final Four on CBS ending with the “One Shining Moment Anthem ” to finish off championship monday .

The Final Four pre game show will start around 4:00 p.m. with the VCU – Butler game tip off set for around 6:10 followed by a brief between game session and then the UK – Conneticut game set for an approximate 8:45 tip off .

It will be interesting to see if CBS brings Coach Rick Pitino to the panel for Final Four weekend .

Cats Head To New Jersey In Unique Underdog Role
( UK vs. Ohio State In Late Game at 9:45 On CBS )

Now that this UK team has reached the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA tournament let’s all step back and take a long hard look at the situation Coach Cal and his thin but growingly impressive Super Seven man rotation are in .

The Cats set at 27 – 8 with several wins against top 20 competition and an SEC tournament championship and one hard earned revenge game reward on it’s resume .

Has it reached it’s pinnacle for the season or has it merely reached the crossroads game of a possible Final Four destination ?

One things for sure their opponent The Ohio State Buckeyes the team that according to the nations college basketball gurus of print have been anointed # 1 status for most of the season a team that based on Americas leader in sports programming the ESPN Network has stamped decidedly better than the Cats lies waiting on the Cats . Add to this scenario the fact that the Kentucky Wildcats college basketballs all time leader in wins and one of it’s most storied programs that many follow and revere but many across the nation also dislike for various reasons , the team that has had many battles with it’s own governing organization the NCAA . The team that is now lead by arguably the biggest thorn in the NCAA’s side in recent years Coach John Calipari .

That team is treading for a change in unchartered waters . The Kentucky Wildcats enter a big time college basketball game as decided Underdogs .

Nothing to lose but plenty to gain .

Don’t know about you but I’m looking forward to seeing how the Cats perform in this setting and especially with a week to prepare .

So far the NCAA selection process has put UK up against the Albert Einstein’s from the Ivy League . No problem , although it was dangerous at times , in the end UK used it’s athleticism to overcome the intelligence of the Princeton Tigers . Next , the Big Boys from the Big East over at West Virginia who had bullied teams around all year with their physical toughness was the obstacle laying in front of the Cats . Again , no problem “Jorts” Harrellson and Deandre Liggins along with their teammates more than held their own in the toughness department and again weathered the storm to give Coach Cal his second win against his ole buddy Bob “Huggy Bear” Huggins .

Now , The Ohio State Buckeyes set at 34 – 2 as a team that was anointed # 1 status many weeks ago in college basketball as the next hurdle that UK must jump to get another shot at the coveted Final Four prize . The Buckeyes are a team that has it’s own possible one and done freshman phenom in Jared Sullinger who patrols the paint area of a basketball court very similar to UK’s Demarcus Cousins of 2009 – 2010 except Sullinger plays a much more intelligent game and is not as foul prone as Cousins which results in 28 – 32 minutes of playing time instead of Cousins usual 18 – 20 minutes .

No question the key matchup in the game will be how creative and effective “Jorts” Harrellson can be against Sullinger . It would help if Eloy Vargas could give 5 – 7 minutes of quality defense in the first half and get UK into the second half with a shot of getting the game to the 10:00 minute mark with no more than a five point difference .

Both teams rely on freshman for a major portion of their offensive out put with UK relying a little more than Ohio State on their fuzzy faced phenoms . UK has three players averaging double figures in a six man rotation with a seventh man in Eloy Vargas slowly gaining confidence each game to add a few more quality minutes . Ohio State has five players averaging double figures in their seven man rotation with the 6th and 7th men averaging around 15 – 18 minutes a game .

Both teams average around 76.0 to 77.0 points per game

Bottom line Ohio State is the better team but they are beatable .

But more than anything it will be very interesting to see how Ohio State carries the weight and pressure of being # 1 on their shoulders and the Cats play with nothing to lose .

NCAA Coaching Carousel Begins

Let’s give yours truly a pat on the back for predicting the Billy Gillispie and Texas Tech hookup over five weeks ago . This is the first of several coaching moves on the NCAA Div. 1-A level that annually takes place each spring . Listed below is a list of known openings across college basketball and who the rumor mill has as possible candidates :

School Possible Candidates

N.C. State Shaka Smart (VCU) , Chris Mooney (Richmond)
Georgia Tech “Tubby” Smith , Shaka Smart (VCU) , Chris Mooney (Richmond)
Arkansas Mike Anderson (Missouri) , “Tubby” Smith , Chris Mooney (Richmond)
Oklahoma “Tubby” Smith , Shaka Smart (VCU)
Providence Chris Mooney (Richmond)
Bradley
Florida Gulf Coast Kyle Macy , Ricky Pitino Jr.
Manhattan Univ. Steve Massiello ( UofL Asst.)

At the press deadline for this column the Bruce Pearl delimma at Tennessee had not been decided but most everyone in and around UT sports in Knoxville and around the SEC expects Pearl to get his pink slip sometime this week and don’t be surprised if the UT athletic director Mike Hamilton isn’t escourted off campus eventually as well .
( Cats Resume Earns Them A # 4 Seed In A Classic Matchup of the Nurds vs. the One and Dones )

By – Ira D. Combs – Director / Syndicated Columnist – Tri State Sports Media Services Inc.

Remember those times when you were growing up and you literally hated to hear that dreaded remark from Mom and / or Dad that you knew was eventually coming , those certain times when you thought you knew more about life in general than they did , remember that stern and painfully correct response of ” I told you what was going to happen ” . Then you just had to hump up like an elderly Monk and turn your face downward with an I know , I know .

Well , I love it when I can say I told you so to my critics when I’ve made a rare correct assessment and prediction of the Wildcats .

I told you this particular UK team would finish strong down the stretch when it played four of it’s last six games in the friendly confines of Rupp Arena . I told you UK would play more comfortable and confident on a neutral court than most other teams when March Madness rolled around . I told you Darius Miller and Josh Harrellson had not hit their ceilings at mid season yet and would be much more consistent down the stretch when needed most .

Now , barring the injury bug throwing a cloud over March Madness UK is set to make a deeper run into the Big Dance than many ever imagined back in October with or without Big Enes and I’ll include myself into that group .

UK’s first round opponent will be Princeton University of the Ivy League and the game site will be at The Times Forum in Tampa , Florida on thursday ( time of tipoff will be announced on monday by the NCAA ) .

Having developed a friendship with a few NCAA Div. 1 coaches in the past I can share a story I’ve heard many times in the past with you . The unwritten word around the college coaching fraternity come this time of year when Pete Carrill was the coach at Princeton you could privately ask any top 25 NCAA coach on the eve of the selection process who they would hate to be matched up with and the quick answer was always Pete Carrill and Princeton University .

Thank God ole crafty Pete has retired . Princeton’s new coach is Sydney Johnson .

Could The Bluegrass Have The NCAA’s Top Two Basketball Coaches

I admit I am a tad biased but I feel very confident and qualified in evaluating basketball players and coaches with a 40 year career behind me in basketball as a player , high school coach , and administrator .

I think the two best coaching jobs in college basketball for the 2010 – 2011 season have unfolded right here in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in front of our own eyes . John Calipari and Rick Pitino have in my opinion done a splendid job with their respective teams and situations . They have squeezed every ounce of talent and energy out of their players and every win possible out of their teams .

Also , let’s not leave out another exceptional job of basketball coaching done over in northeastern kentucky at Morehead State University by one Donnie Tyndall . I suspect he will be leading another higher profile NCAA Div. 1-A level program in the near future and making much more than the chump change you get at an Ohio Valley conference school like MSU .

Now , back to Coach Cal and Coach P . , both coaches would have privately told you back on October 15th that with the rosters they had returning and the demands and schedule that laid in front of them were just to much to overcome at schools with such lofty expectations . I just don’t think 25 wins and a constant weekly spot in the top 25 along with an appearance in each schools conference championship game would have been a realistic expectation , neither coach would have or could have had those goals realistically in mind .

Not to mention the constant scrutiny by Coach Cal of Big Blue Nation or the off the court problems of Coach P .

But they have both once again conquered the odds and lead their respective teams to quality seasons and are on the brink of another deep run in the Big Dance

NCAA Always Gets Last Say

The NCAA has once again pierced and gouged Kentucky Basketball ( pick your english language posion ) in the selection process by placing them as a # 4 seed in the toughest bracket of the tournament with Ohio State , North Carolina , and Syracuse . Not to mention another possible appearance with Bob Huggins and West Virginia .

Anybody out there think the folks up in Indianapolis have forgot about all those nasty e-mails and the internet chat line abuse that was addressed at the NCAA headquarters on the Enes Kanter case , also let’s not forget our A.D Mitch Barnhart and President Lee Todd’s public remarks toward the NCAA in the matter . UK and Coach Cal closed the book and moved on after The Kanter Ruling nobody will ever convince me that the NCAA didn’t file all the abuse they took away .

I’ve expressed many times my opinion on the NCAA and it remains firm . They have been and it appears always will be one of the most vindictive organizations in America .

To certain member schools .

Don’t give me that story about the everyday operations of the NCAA has nothing to do with the NCAA basketball selection committee .

Who oversees them and places them on the committee and isn’t anything that comes out of the main office a direct reflection of the man in charge . Coach Cal is responsible for Kentucky basketball and Mark Emmert is the President of the NCAA and responsible for the management of NCAA events . The man in charge is a direct reflection of the company or organization that he is responsible for .

Since I’m in sermon form can anyone explain to me why you would match up two in state schools like Louisville and MSU then send them to Denver , Colorado instead of five different 1st round sites that could have been sold out with the states passionate fan base and history for following college basketball in March .

I agree with the Mouth of the South Dick Vitale it’s time that the NCAA steps up to the plate and creates a new selection committee for the NCAA Div. 1 – A basketball tournament with one basic criteria to be able to serve on the committee . You must have been a former Div. 1 basketball head coach who has been retired for a minimum of four years . The four years takes out of play the fact you still have players on a team that you coached still being involved in the tournament .

Presently , the NCAA is letting a bunch of A.D.’s and a few of them female I might add make these delicate decisions .

If your going to host the nations most elite college basketball tournament then let the nations most intelligent and experienced basketball people oversee it .

Coach Cal’s Luck Finally Runs Out

That rabbits foot and buckeye that Coach Cal has been lugging around in his left pants pocket since the season started may have finally ran it’s course for the season . Last week I talked about how tired UK looked at the end of the Vanderbilt and Tennessee games in the last week of the regular season .

Could that be the reason that Liggins and Lamb went down at the end of the Alabama semi final game in last weekends SEC tournament ? It’s definitely something to think about .

Yes , both injuries were related to accidentally stepping on an opponents foot but could their lack of energy have caused their response or reflexes to fail them and ultimately result in injury . That reason alone would be enough for most coaches to consider substituting for starters or front line players when only days away from the most important part of the season .

Personally , I can’t buy the opponents full court pressing ways as an excuse Coach Cal .

You just simply rolled the dice one to many times and lost . Remember your opening statement to the Commonwealth two years ago , ” I can’t walk on water , I’m not the second coming , I will make mistakes ” . You just made one big one . But it appears you have overcome the mistake albeit with a great effort from your training staff saturday night . Having seen Liggins and Lamb in sundays championship game I can see all Cats ready for the tipoff this thursday in the NCAA tournament .

But most of all I hope you can swallow your pride and ego and learn from it just like your players learn the game from you .

It looked as though you did by playing the four lonely subs all of 35 seconds in sundays SEC championship game dangerously guarding a 16 point lead .

Director / Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Services Inc.

Finally , after writing and predicting for three weeks that Cal’s Cats would reboot and finish strong down the stretch I can crow a little . The rest of the way it’s ” Neutral Court City ” and time for Big Blue Nation to step up to the plate once again .

Not only did the cream finally come to the top in the last two weeks with wins against the only two SEC teams ranked above UK ( Florida & Vanderbilt ) but the cherry on the top was an even more impressive come from behind win 64 – 58 in Knoxville against a Tennessee team that had a classic underachieving season , possibly Coach Bruce Pearl’s last . UK improves to 22 – 8 on the season while finishing SEC play with a 10 – 6 record in sole possession of 2nd place in the East and more importantly can rest during the first day and entire 1st round of the SEC tournament this coming week .

Kentucky’s first game in this weeks SEC tournament will be on friday at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of thursdays game between South Carolina – Ole Miss . All SEC tournament games on thursday , friday , and saturday will be televised on ( WKYT Ch. 27 – Lexington and WYMT Ch. 57 – Hazard ) as well as the rest of the SEC television network . The championship game sunday at 1:00 p.m. will be televised live nationally on the ABC network which is channel 36 in Lexington .

Miller Time Down The Stretch

Let’s give a little love to a player ( Darius Miller ) that in my opinion has been unjustly criticized on many occasions this year and a few times last year . Last year Miller played on a team that had five first round NBA draft choices but occasionally was criticized for not bringing anything to the table . Never was mentioned that you can only play with one ball and it was going to be in John Wall or Eric Bledsoe’s hand and then tossed inside to “Big Cuz” or Patrick Patterson . It’s kind of hard to ( score the ball ) as they say these days if it’s always in someone else’s hands .

Then we drifted into this season and all Miller did was float thru the first 10 games averaging double figure’s 10.6 ppg. and 6.7 rpg. but somehow everybody established that double figures in points for the teams third option was bad on a team that already had two players averaging 17.5 and 17. 7 ppg . It began to grow on Miller mentally around the holiday break in my opinion . By that time freshman guard Doron Lamb had become a darling in the eyes of the fan base and Coach Cal became more vocal in his opinions of Darius Miller .

As I watched Miller and Harrellson have a few private words before a game at Rupp Arena during pre game warm ups in the early part of February it appeared to me that Miller finally got tired of the undue criticism and basically said ” to !!!! with all of them it’s me against the world ” I’ll sink or swim my way the rest of the way .

The last seven games Miller has averaged 16.5 points and finished the regular season in Knoxville with an effort of 15 points , four rebounds , and two steals . Not to mention a back breaking and game saving three against the Vols when the Cats clinched 2nd place in the East .

Personally , I hate to see where this team stood today if Miller wasn’t with them , probably headed toward another N.I.T.

Two Down and Two To Go

Most NCAA Div. 1-A basketball coaches break their seasons into four parts when they start official practice on Oct. 15th each year . The pre-season , regular season , conference tournament , and NCAA tournament .

We are about to embark on the least important one . The SEC tournament .

I’ve never liked the conference tournament set up it’s a cheap way for a team to get a cheap bid to the Big Dance . If you haven’t earned a bid thru a 28 game regular season schedule I think you should be forced to hang up the ole jock strap and start planning and preparing for next year . However , in today’s college sports world money has to be made in various ways to pay the ridiculous salaries of coaches and athletic directors among other athletic department personnel . So , conference tournaments came on the scene in the early to mid 90′s and are here to stay it appears .

I know that Big Blue Nation loves the SEC tournament and especially in Atlanta but this particular year even with winning the two seed bye it may come back to haunt UK .

Why ? Because I think this particular UK team is tired .

Coach Cal has fussed , cussed , preached , chastised , and on occasion berated his players publicly until he’s squeezed every ounce of energy possible out of them . They’ve looked extremely tired the last few games in particular to me when they had a 13 point lead against Vandy last tuesday early in the 2nd half only to luckily hold on to a two point win . Then against UT on sunday they took complete control of the game midway of the 2nd half with an eight point lead with two straight possessions but couldn’t finish strong because they had no energy . Luckily , you can stand still and shoot free throws while giving your teammates a rest at the same time or the UT game may have had a different ending .

Call me crazy but I think the best thing that could happen for this team is an early exit from the SEC tournament and five or six good days rest in the Joe B. Hall Wildcat Lodge before they start on that six game gauntlet it takes to win an NCAA championship .

But it won’t happen because when Coach Cal and the players enter the Georgia Dome next friday for their first appearance , trust me , Big Blue Nation will rise as one and probably about 35,000 strong then the competitive juices will start flowing in the players and the hunt for another conference championship will be on .

I just fear it may drain the last drop of energy left in this thin seven man rotation .

Cats Head Into Final Week Still Looking For # 2 Seed

( SEC Tiebreaker Could Decide Tournament Seeds )

By – Ira D. Combs

Director / Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

Kentucky basketball added another factual record saturday to it’s long and storied historic tradition when it beat the Florida Gators in Rupp Arena 76 – 68 . The win stamped UK with it’s 55th 20 win season in college basketball .

UK may have missed their best chance to date to tighten up that # 2 seed scenario last week when of all people Tennessee nailed Vanderbilt on tuesday night in Nashville to help the Cats . Didn’t matter because Kentucky turns around the next night and has another 2nd half late game breakdown to waste a great opportunity of tying the Commodores in the standings and setting up this tuesdays game as the tiebreaker in the friendly confines of Rupp Arena .

Now , UK enters the final week of the 2010-2011 regular season still with a chance for the coveted # 2 seed in the East even with last weeks late game meltdown # 5 of the SEC season at Arkansas but it’s more probable than ever that the conference tiebreaker system will decide who the # 2 seed is if UK can beat Vandy in Rupp Arena tuesday .

Still if that scenario develops UK and Vanderbilt both will have to win or lose next weekend when UK plays at UT and Vanderbilt host Florida in Nashville .

If that all develops and Georgia doesn’t enter the party with a last week surge here is the SEC tiebreaker system that will decide the # 2 seed for the SEC east :

SEC Basketball Two Team Tiebreaker System

# 1 – Won – lost record between the two teams in head to head competition ( this will not decide seed between UK & Vandy if they both end in tie )

# 2 – East division won – lost record of UK & Vandy from within their division ( 10 games with sister teams in East )

# 3 – Won – lost record of the two tied teams versus the # 1 seed in their own division ( then proceeding on down thru the # 6 seed if necessary )

# 4 – Non division record of the two teams ( six games with west division )

# 5 – Won – lost record of the two teams versus the # 1 seed in the opposite division ( and proceeding thru the # 6 seed if necessary )

# 6 – SEC Commissioner Mike Slive will flip a coin

Once this scenario unfolds and the SEC east # 2 seed is set what will the road look like to win the SEC tournament ?

First of all and most important is the # 2 seed gets the first day off with the bye and that would be huge for this UK team with it’s short 6 or 7 man rotation of players that Coach Cal has definitely decided on . Secondly , it will match up the first opponent of the SEC east # 2 seed which will be the # 6 east team ( probably South Carolina ) and the west # 3 team ( probably Arkansas , Miss. St. , or Ole Miss ) as the UK opponent if they can garner that # 2 seed .

If the Cats drop to the SEC # 3 east seed category their opponent will be arguably one of the worst two teams in the conference the west # 6 seed either Auburn or LSU not a bad deal except you have to play on thursday and it will be the last game at 10:00 o’clock .

Now if I’ve not confused everyone enough and your head isn’t spinning out of control you can go online to www.secsports.com and pull up the mens basketball link and follow thru the rest of the regular season with each game and the conference office webmaster will provide you will all possibilities of seedings and matchups for the SEC tournament .

This years SEC mens basketball tournament will be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta , Georgia ( site of the famous tornado tournament in 2008 and the lost prisoner escape in 2007 that put all hotels on lockdown in downtown Atlanta for about 12 hours ) that’s about as much excitement as I can take in my last two trips to Atlanta . Both scenarios have me somewhat skeptical about covering this years tourney but we’ll probably rely on our survival skills of the past and make the tract down 1 – 75 .

Speaking on a more lighter note the SEC tournament is a special sporting event even though it’s not elimination time as the NCAA tourney is , still the atmosphere in and around The Dome is kind of like a larger college version of Kentucky’s “Boys” Sweet 16 state tournemant but make no mistake it’s Big Blue Nation that makes that atmosphere .

Cats In The Hunt For SEC East # 2 Seed

Ira D. Combs

Director / Syndicated Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

Two down and four to go for Cal’s Cats as we get closer to March Madness .

Yep , with last weeks sweep of Mississippi State and South Carolina the Cats have taken care of business to this point in the final stretch drive goal of obtaining that coveted SEC East # 2 seed which would provide UK with a 1st round bye for the SEC tourney in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome March 10th – 13th .

But it gets tougher with each game the rest of the way .

Why is their so much talk and importance being put on the final four regular season games and # 2 east seed ?

# 1 – The # 2 SEC east seed will let UK be able to dodge the four day gauntlet other lower seeds will have to endure by letting their seven man rotation rest and watch the first day .

# 2 – If UK pulls off this trick down the stretch and beat two top 20 teams in Florida and Vandy it has to help the ole RPI and strength of schedule .

# 3 – Also , going on a six game winning streak entering SEC tournament play where their history is impressive as well will have to impress the NCAA selection committee in their seeding process .

However , Cal’s thin Cats must take the stern attitude of one game at a time and really focus the next two days on that trip to Arkansas . The Razorbacks have been averaging only 7,000 to 8,000 fans for most conference games but wednesday I’m expecting a standing room only crowd with each “Hog Fan” at their emotional peak with the Blue & White of UK in town . Even though Arkansas doesn’t necessarily possess the overall talent of UK’s next two home game opponents of Florida and Vandy it could in all likelihood be the crossroads game of this final stretch run . Word around the conference is this game could decide John Pelphrey’s future in Fayetteville . So once again the Cats will take their opponents best hit on the road in an extremely hostile environment .

It says here UK will finally get that late game scenario down and finish off a road game impressively .

That will set up a couple of nice payback games with our Gator and Commodore friends to close out the Rupp Arena part of this season and then provide John Calipari with an opportunity to send his old coaching foe Bruce Pearl to the coaching unemployment line with a loss in his last Rocky Top appearance . Another hot rumor among the SEC media reps is that Bruce Pearl is coaching on borrowed time and the UT athletic department boss has the pink slip enclosed in envelope ready for delivery at seasons end .

Don’t get much sweeter than that if you’re a part of the college coaching fraternity . That’s a lot of scenarios falling in place over the next two weeks for Cal and company but stranger things have happened in college basketball especially in Lexington .

NBA Weekend Provides Ex UK Players Return To Rupp

With the NBA being in their annual weekend extravaganza all star break UK athletic department officials set up appearances at Rupp Arena saturday for Jodie Meeks and Patrick Patterson who both were marched to center court during the 3rd and 4th timeouts of the first half to loud standing ovations . The 1st time out of course at each UK home game is always reserved for Lee and Patsy Todd to showcase their academic friends at the expense of the Rupp Arena experience which usually puts the emotions of Rupp Arena in lockdown mode .

However , the traditional 2nd half making of the “Y” in Kentucky when a present or former celebrity UK athlete is escourted to midcourt by a UK cheerleader to rev up the crowd while standing at center court with hands spread wide and high , that honor went deservedly to former UK punter Tim Masthay who was a vital cog in the Green Bay “Packers” run to the 2011 Super Bowl championship .

It will be interesting to see who UK selects to make the traditional “Y” at the final home game on senior night against Vanderbilt , anybody want to take a guess , I’ll print the suggested names and how many votes each got in next weeks column if you will e-mail me at icombs14@windstream.net ?

Cats Hope To Build Momentum At Home Down The Stretch For NCAA

( College Football Recruiting Periods Need Tweaking )

By – Ira D. Combs

Director / Columnist

Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.

Once again close but no cigar for John Calipari and his Cats on the road in the SEC .

This time in the capital city of Country Music Nashville , Tennessee where the Commodores play with a root’n toot’n passion like everyone else when the Big Blue comes to town . This time the Cats fell by a score of 81 – 77 and that brings the total points of the last four SEC road losses to a grand total of 10 points . Don’t go jump off the Clays Ferry bridge Big Blue Nation , be patient with this team they will find ways to win when they don’t have the odds stacked against them playing in the opponents back yard .

I’ve proclaimed in this column more than once that these games will toughen UK up for the post season when they will have the intangibles of the neutral court in their favor. Nobody , absolutely nobody plays better in neutral court game situations like UK does .

I’m not saying UK will go on a deep run of Final Four magnitude but the simple fact of the matter is if you’ll check the last 10 NCAA champions you’ll find that several of them had 5 to 7 losses when they won the championship . UK’s present 17 – 7 record isn’t necessarily an eye opener but attach a six game season ending winning streak to it and 23 – 7 going into the SEC tournament can stir the interest of the post season to a higher level .

UK having 7 losses doesn’t mean the season is over by any stretch of the imagination .

Now that the dreaded seven game stretch with five on the road is behind them the Cats can look forward to building some momentum for the SEC and NCAA tournaments with four of their last six games in the friendly confines of Rupp Arena . Also , the lone two road games of these last six will be against two teams that will have a very vulnerable coach in John Pelphrey at Arkansas and Bruce Pearl at Tennessee . Nothing is more demoralizing to a team than to have their own fans pulling against them so they can finalize running their coach out of town and hire a new one for a fresh new start and that’s just the situation both of those coaches will be in when UK comes to their town later this month .

Arkansas has reportedly had several crowds of 7,000 – 9,000 this season with a seating capacity of around 18,000 , nothing will get a coach fired quicker than empty seats .

Of course we all hate what’s going on at Arkansas because John Pelphrey is one of our most popular native sons . But that’s the lay of the land in big time Div. 1 college basketball and knowing Big Red like I do he’ll land somewhere in another job .

The final stretch run of SEC games begins this week with Mississippi State and South Carolina coming to Rupp Arena on tuesday at 7:00 and saturday at 4:00 .

Football Recruiting Needs Tweaked

The farther we get away from the Rich Brooks era the more impressive the man looks . One of Coach Brooks pet pieves was trying to get the NCAA to have an early signing period for football in August like basketball has in November . It always fell on deaf ears especially in SEC meetings . I’m not saying this scenario caused UK to lose recruits like Lamar Dawson and Jon Davis it appears they had their mind set on leaving the state all along they just kept a good poker face and waited until signing week to let it out .

However , a coaching staff should be rewarded when it beats the bushes for those under the radar recruits between their junior – senior years and have an opportunity to sign them before they enter their senior year of high school competition like the NCAA allows in basketball . In the present day recruiting world of football those players get into their senior years and get a second look by the big boys of college football and they end up restocking the elite football programs with more high profile recruits to stack the deck against the middle of the road college football programs like UK . It appears the rich get richer in college football recruiting no matter how hard the UK’s of the world work at recruiting .

Their should be some reward for a coaching staff in hustling up a recruit early on .

In other football related news according to insiders over at the Nutter Center UK seems to have reeled in one of it’s better recruiting classes in quality and quantity in several years even with the miss on Dawson and Davis . The only problem is that it’s SEC brethren brought in another bumper crop as well . UK’s recruits were rated 31st out of a possible 135 schools by www.scout.com but 9 other SEC teams were ranked in the top 25 . Recruiting rankings and ratings are very much overrated any way because none of the classes ever compete directly against one another . Each year the incoming class is throwed in with the rest of the roster so there is no direct competition against one another .

It says here that at the end of the year next fall UK will look back and see that losing the recruiting sweepstakes with Dawson and Davis will not have hurt the UK program near as much as losing QB Ryan Mossakowski . Sure hope I’ll stand corrected on this statement next November but quarterback play to next years team will be of much more importance than linebacker play and right now UK has only one with any game experience in Morgan Newton and his passing skills have a long way to go .
