| 4-11-04 I think some cook-offs would go well. Maybe have a cook-off for a dessert and maybe one for chili and then another one for a casserole. Give awards for the ones voted the best.
Also maybe you could have a fishing tournament on Panbowl..that has always went well; maybe a video game contest; feed sack race; horseshoe tournament....just some other suggestions. Mary Haddix IDEAS from the November 15th, 2004 Heritage Discussion Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest Talent Show Fishing contest with cane poles for the kids Pie eating contest Potato Sack Race Greased Pig Three Legged Race Battle of the school bands More Ideas emailed Make the fair a camp out so people are at the action. Plus I think the more children have a role in the activities you have the family base. To add to the festive events greasy pole climb, pajamas contest, unusual hat contest. spice it up a notch! J. Bell I think the name "Heritage Fair" is a wonderful name...but I don't think it should be combined with the "Honey Festival", that festival is busy enough. I think it should be combined with the Pig out in the Park at Douthitt...and some of the other parks should have activities also.....Re-enactment, and period clothing would be so wonderful......Parade in town, and including the schools all sounds wonderful....We could have the inside of the City and the parks included in that festival..memorial day sounds great too....or have the festival in spring...there isn't much going on in Spring.....and after those winter days, it would be great to have a festival to look forward too. I'd be willing to help with some of the organization of this festival! Christa From Miller: In the spring of l977, Charles Hays and myself encouraged the Breathitt County Jaycees to restart the old agricultural fair that used to be held at Quicksand. I would encourage the use of contests with children and their livestock, garden produce, etc. I would also suggest that you have athletic and academic competition between the local schools, as well as asking the school board to dismiss school on a Friday for this special day. Talk to some local people who can tell you all about the School Fair Day which was held for years. Our Question to you the Public 1) Are you interested in a new Festival? 2) What date do we have it on? 3) Name the festival; a) Freedom b) Breathitt Heritage c) Memorial d) Breathitt's Friends e) Your Choice, Give us a name (Good or Bad, here are emails that have been submitted so far) Here's the Ideas you have submitted Festival to be called Freedom Fest and have it on the fourth of July weekend because the only thing that happens is the fireworks and there are always alot of people in town. You could combined it with the Pig Out at the Park and make it a big festival with alot of activites for the young and old. Allowing people to set up booths and things. Joy The Breathitt County Heritage Festival sounds good. Darlene 1. YES 2. KEEP IT ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND 3. B- BREATHITT HERITAGE P. Gross Sounds great to me. I don;t think it needs to be Labor day weekend. To much conflict with the Honey Festival. I am partial to Food Festivals that celebrate the area. There is nothing like Breathitt County's Tradition the the political Barbacue Pig Roast. My Suggestions: Date July 4th Name: Breathitt County Pig Roast Festival. Location: City Wide Possible Event: Pig Roast Cook Off, baking contest. ATV rally out in the county. Mud Races, Canoe Race, Bike Races, mud wrestling, Car and Truck Show. Carnival Rides, Phillip The Honey Festival should just be overhauled with new blood and new ideas. Cut the head off and give it a tuck here and there. I agree that there needs to be new ideas but to kill the Honey Festival is not the way to do it. The name is well known and people still come home for it. Revamp it give it a new look and personally that it had in the beginning. Holding the festival at the park would be so chaotic. Look at the parking when there is a ballgame going on. I don't even want to think about fighting that. I think a committee should be formed just to visit other festivals for ideas that work. The biggest improvement would to have a new head. Possibly moving it up on College Ave. and Highland would work. Run the big tent up in front of the Christian church you have parking lots if Lees would agree for food and music. Just an idea. Thank the old food and music heads but get new ones. A whole variety of music is needed. On Sunday all the churches (as many that would participate) needs to be included. The possibilities are endless and not at all exhausted. I'll say it again Don't bury the Honey Festival yet it truly is not dead. Just my thought on the matter. As I said at the first I hope it won't be the last Sandi Yes, I am interested. Labor day week-end is good. I like Breathitt Heritage really well. Thanks for allowing my input. Lois I think a new festival is a great idea and keeping it during labor day is the best time. I think that the name of the festival should pay a tribute to all the armed forces..Considering that on Dec 13th we have men and women from our home town deploying and going to defend our country. Lets please not forget about them. So with this in mind I think that the freedom festival sounds great but are we looking for a new festival committee ...I think that a new committee would make a huge diference. Shelly I still think we should combine the county fair and like you said the school fair and a new festival on Memorial day weekend and then you could still have it on Monday also. The only disadvantage would be we would need to ask the Fiscal Court for money at the beginning of the Fiscal year instead of the end of the Fiscal Year. As for a name, I think Freedom fest would be fantastic because of the veterans and the memorial weekend. We have our war memorial, we can do reenactments of certain battles and with the volunteer veterans we had in the world war, it would be great. I would be more than happy to help any way I can in this just let me know. Bobby To Whom it may concern: I am interested in a New Festival but should include the name Honey Festival in it somehow. I feel it should remain around Labor Day because alot of people schedule their vacation around this time and it will not interfer with other festivals or activities. A name that could work for the festival is: Breathitt Co. Heritage Honey Festival. Thanks for asking for the publics input. Donna 1. Heck yeah! A new festival is long over due. Breathitt Co. needs something new to revitalize the festival time like it was when I was a kid. Many moons ago during the Honey Festival that is all people would talk about and everybody and their dog would go. That is back in the day when you was lucky to find parking anywhere close. Now, you can drive and go anywhere you wanna go. New committee, new ideals, just new everything. Start it over from scratch and build it up. 2. I think it should still be held on Labor Day weekend. Labor Day and festival goes hand in hand in Breathitt. However, that was a great ideal to drop Monday. People that come in from out of town for the festival usually has to go back home on that day anyway so why not compress it into 3 long fun filled days. 3. I think the name that you had was good -- Breathitt Heritage. Breathitt should definitely be in the name and Heritage is great, but there seems like there is something missing. I personally can't think of anything to go in there, but I hope some of those creative minds out there come up with something. Robert If July 4th - Freedom Labor Day - Breathitt Heritage This a very good idea !!!! Hey, why not have events like in the School Fair, spelling bees, math quiz, and etc. Each school was identified by a banner (homemade, I believe) and homemade hats. Gosh, that was a long time ago for me. LOL But happy memories! It doesn't have to be expensive to be a "Precious Memory" to young children. Floats from the schools and Bands or at least a Drummer. Fann Thank You For Asking In My Opinon on this Matter I think The Name Of Breathitt Heritage Sounds Excellent and Also Think Labor Day Weekend would Still Be Great Time For the Event,And Also at the Park David This sounds like a wonderful idea. It is most definitely time for a change. It also looks like this is the only way to have a change is to start something new. Labor Day would be the best time to have the festival especially if we are to get the schools involved. I also like the name Breathitt Heritage. Gail I do think you should continue to have the festival on Labor Day Weekend, but drop the Monday. I think the park is a good location, if you do what we did at the Relay for Life and get the Hazard Trolleys to transport people to and from and have designated parking. I also believe that the entertainment committee (I would be happy to join this team) could get a bigger name singer to entertain on Saturday night. Georgetown just had the Festival of the Horse and Billy Joe Shaver was their performer. I also think that Jack Strong should be on earlier and longer. I like the Bluegrass, but I think it should end sooner (maybe start earlier) and the country/rock should begin earlier. I also believe that the parade should be revamped to include Coal trucks (like it did when the festival was still strong). I also believe their should be a major car show (with judges from outside of Breathitt County that are fair and unbiased) and a motorcycle show in conjunction with this. I think this should be held at a different time than the parade and it should be held at the festival (maybe at the old park, or close, like at True Value) I also believe you should ask the winners to ride through the parade along with the Breathitt County Harley club. I think the festival should be renamed "Breathitt County Homecoming" because it gives people like myself who no longer live in Breathitt County a reason to come home and see old friends and family. I would love to help with this committee, if you allow "Outside Help." I live in Lexington. Just let me know. Thanks, Rose Lexington In reply..I dont understand for the life of me how you all could even begin to think the park is the best place to have it .Not even close. They cant park people that come there for ball games much less a whole festival.I do agree we need a new committe but personally I would like to see the name of it remain the Honey Festival. We have over 25 yrs with that name .We just need improvemnt.Lots of improvement, that we get by having a New committee over it and lots of hard work and dedication. Not just a few weeks before its time to set up the tent. Also downtown Jackson is best place for this festival. We dont need to change location or name .We need to change activity and committees as I stressed before.I think bringing back the old school fair is great.I dont know why they ever quit doing that. That would bring in better parades because schools would build the floats plus all the kids get to march around Jackson. That alone brings out a very large crowd because all parents, granparents ,aunts uncles, brothers, sisters and whatever would all come out to watch there kid participate. Also gives kids in schools more ,like the majorettes and all back.Im very interested in taking part or helping to do anything I can do to bring our Honey Festival back to life.Lots more ideas here .If you need my help you can contact me. 1) Are you interested in a new Festival? Im interested in an improved festival 2) What date do we have it on?Labor Day weekend. 3) Name the festival; e) Your Choice, Give us a name...I think we need to keep the traditional name Breathitt Co Honey Festival..its like trying to change the name of the Dairy bar or WHite Flash. They been around so long it just wouldnt seem right. Karen i so agree with you, the honey festival has out ran it's course, it's always the same people, items, parade everything. we need a festival that attracts the younger generation , thats exciting, fresh, gives people of all ages something to want to go to. please make this happen! the name not sure, i like pioneer days, hillbilly days, something to do with our hills and our heritage, would be great, so people from other counties could discover something good about breathitt for a change. looking forward to a new festival, good luck., sherry This is long over due and I am excited that it is being looked at. I like Beathitt Heritage Days building on the theme of getting former residents to return for the festival and showing off the local talent and progress of this community. Can include local craft, history, yard sales and special features that are unique to our community. There are 2 communities in west KY who have done this and have had good success with it. Michele I think that a good name for a new festival would be "Breathitt County Days" I think it should remain on Labor Day Weekend because most people have a three day weekend. I agree that the Honey Festival has run it's course. Mary 1) Are you interested in a new Festival? Yes that would be awesome 2) What date do we have it on? I would say over 4th of July because there is already a pageant that sends the girls on to state, so that's one step to being a lot better then the Honey Festival. 3) Name the festival: Breathitt Heritage Festival would be a good name. Jonneatha I think Breathitt Heritage would be a great name. That would be a good reason for people to come in and vivit family and friends Sandy Just wanted to share a few ideas with you. First, you might want to consider than during the Labor Day weekend holiday, you would have to compete with various other festivals--Clay County Days in Manchester, the one in winchester, and a few others. Woudln't it be easier to schedule it a different weekend during school? I'm sure you would see an increase in atttendance and local revenues. Second, for the parade, invite bands/groups from the surrounding counties (Lee, Wolfe, & Owsley). Third, what about a spelling bee for all local schools? I will keep looking at the board for more input and hope everything works out. I would love to assit you in anyway, so email me if I can help. Randall A nice name would be " Eastern Pride Festival" sounds catchy don't ya think? Good luck and God Bless!! Tom a) freedom Sonja I will whole heartly agree that the festival has become stagnant. All though I don't think it has run it's course, I think the committee has ran theirs though. There is an old saying "if you always do what you always done you will always get what you always got". These people have had their day in the lime light and don't want to get out of it. I think the HONEY festival needs fresh ideas and leaders. Have a county election every four years to determine who is going to be the committee members. Let the people decide, it's our festival not just a select few. After four years, if the people feel they are not doing their jobs, elect someone else. I have a million ideas for the festival, and actually I wrote a paper my freshman year in college stating how disatisfied I was with the festival. This was back in 1990, 14 years ago. My English 101 teacher told me to do something about it, I tried to talk to the chairperson about my ideas, hopes and dreams for the festival, but to no avail. The person was in the mind set that there is nothing wrong with the festival. I was at the Wooly worm festival, actually I am a food and craft vendor here in Breathitt county and do a lot of shows, anyway getting to my point. I was wanting some Honey at the HONEY festival with a comb in it, guess what, no real honey with comb. Just some synthetic honey that I can go to any grocer in town and buy at a fraction of the price. I was at the Wooly Worm festival this year and low and behold there it sat, locally made fresh honey with comb. So I said to the gentleman, "why don't you come over to the Honey festival and sell your honey there" his reply to me was, "that woman wouldn't let me into the festival". Come on, it's the HONEY festival and no real honey in sight. I know I have rambled on, but this is something that I am passionate about. I take pride in my community and my county and to see something started so many years ago to just fall to the wayside is sickening. So many wonderful people worked dilegently and hard to have something to be proud of and to call OURS. The first names that come to mind is Mr. Terry, and the Douthitt boys. What happened to the Red Masque Players???? So many great things have been started in this county and a select few have dictated and ultimatly destroyed it. I feel it is time for new leadership in civil duties, give the PEOPLE what they want and deserve. Many people have moved off because of jobs, family, etc., but most of them still ventured back to good ole Breathitt County for the Honey festival. If I were to rename the festival it would be called THE BREATHITT COUNTY HOMECOMING FESTIVAL. Not only would this entice people to come home for a reunion of sorts, but maybe make them feel guilty for not returning home. I would change the date on it for the 4th of July, watermelon, fireworks, hot weather, people are on vacation this time of the year. People save up all year for their vacations and if we can entice them to come home and spend their vacation money here, just imagine the revenue it would generate, and trickle down. We could do so many wonderful things with the extra hotel and restraunt money. Like baseball fields for the youth, improving on what we already have. Let's exploit our natural beauty of the mountains and home town hospitality. I want a town to be proud of when people come home for a visit, not to say "man I am sure glad I left", but to think about moving back home. With more money we can do so much more. Here I am rambling again. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, A concerned Breathitt Countian Reed Are you also thinking about having the school children march in the parade like they did years ago? I think that would be one way that all of the children that wanted to be included could be. If they came together as a school on buses...were in the parade and got to stay awhile afterwards and could be transported home on the school buses if they didn't have a way home, more could be involved. When we use to have the parade, I remember marching through town, having a carnival afterwards, spelling bees etc. and then having a way home. Most children could not even attend if they were dependent on they families to get them there. That was the good old days. I remember practicing marching during school. But of course children have changed alot since then. I hope you will consider my idea, if you haven't already thought about it. Carolyn |
