Sometimes we may not realize the impact it has until it hits us close to home. For several teams in this year’s Relay For Life of Breathitt County, involvement in the Relay has been a result of a family member’s diagnosis with cancer. This is true for one of our new teams this year, the Gross Valley Gang. Several members of the Gross Valley Gang have participated in the Relay before, but according to team co-captain Pam Potter, this year is different. “After our father, Hargis Gross, had cancer we found out just how much it affects the family. You think you know how bad it is but until you go through it you have no idea. If our walking one night and raising money will help keep others families from having to go through what we did, it is the least we can do.” For fundraising, the team has been collecting and selling aluminum cans. They are also sponsoring a horse show on May 31st beginning at 7 PM at the Breathitt County Showgrounds. For more information, contact Grace Gross or Pam Potter at 666-2559. The Gross Valley Gang would like to invite you to come out and join us at the Relay For Life of Breathitt County, to be held at Douthitt Park on June 20 beginning at 6 PM with a community walk. If you are a survivor or a caregiver to a cancer survivor, please join us for our opening ceremonies at 7 PM. Our luminary ceremony will be at 10 PM, and includes a special slide show honoring both survivors and those who have lost their battle to cancer. Please help us celebrate, remember, and fight back. Breathitt County has always been a community that embraces the fight against cancer. Last year as an All-American Team, our community showed the entire Mid-South Division that working together really does make anything possible. Please join the Gross Valley Gang and other teams as they continue the fight. Upcoming Relay fundraisers include: •May 3rd- Relay Yard Sale at LBJ PE Gym from 8 AM-3 PM- Several Relay teams will have tables set up; a bake sale will be held as well. •May 16th- Breathitt Co. Retired Teacher’s Association Salad Luncheon- BCRTA are a Relay sponsor. Event will be held at the Lions’ Club from 11 AM-1 PM •May 15th and 16th Jail-a-Thon at Walmart •May 30- Lost Creek Team- soup bean and spaghetti dinner at Watts Fire Dept. $5 plate •June 6- Clemons Clan Chicken and Dumpling dinner- $5 a dinner Thanks, Breathitt County, for all you do. The American Cancer Society recommends screening for adults 50 years or older. Colorectal cancers are the third most common cancers in men and women, and the second leading cause cancer death in the United States. Colorectal cancers accounted for nearly 10% of cancer deaths in the United States in 2007. Risk factors for colorectal cancer include age (over 50), race (African-American), family history, use of tobacco products, diet, and lack of physical activity. More than 90% occur in people older than 50. If detected at an early stage, the five-year survival rate is 90%. If you are 50 or older, fight back against cancer by talking to your health care provider about colorectal cancer screenings. The Relay For Life of Breathitt County is coming up, and the committee wants to make sure you are informed. The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s premier fundraising event. This year’s Relay will be held at Douthitt Park beginning at 6 PM on June 20. It’s not too late to get involved. Contact Patty at 295-4000. Hope to see you there!
