Photo Here Breathitt County 4-H Council Award The Breathitt County 4-H Council received the 2007 Excellence in 4-H Club Support by the Kentucky Association of Extension 4-H Agents. This award is open to all 120 county 4-H programs in the State of Kentucky. Since winning the State Award, this makes the 4-H Council eligible for the National Award, to be chosen early this summer. Each year Breathitt County 4-H Council members plan and organize the 4-H Corn Dog Booth which is the only 4-H Fund-raiser in the county. Monies received from the 4-H Corn Dog Booth help to offset the cost of 4-H Camp and 4-H programs throughout the year. The Breathitt County 4-H Council was nominated for this award by Verlene Congleton, County Extension Agent for 4-H and Youth Development. Miss Congleton stated that “without the efforts of the Breathitt County 4-H Council and the volunteers, the 4-H Corn Dog Booth would not be possible”. Educational Programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin. 4-H Collect-A-Tab Project This year 4-H’ers, their families and their 4-H Clubs collected 346 pounds of pop tabs for the 4-H Collect-A-Tab Project. We received 60 cents a pound which netted a profit of $207.60. This money will be split between the Ronald McDonald House and the Breathitt County Shrine Club. Each year beginning in January and ending the first week of May collections of pop tabs are taken. This year the class room that collected the most in Breathitt County was Mrs. Rosa Turner’s 4th grade, 4-H Club which collected 44 gallons of pop tabs. Mrs. Turner’s class received a pizza party sponsored by the Breathitt County 4-H Council. Photo Here 4-H Collect-A-Tab Project Doing Great! White. The movie, starring Dakota Fanning, opens December 15th. The movie stars, not only Dakota Fanning as Fern, but the voice of Julia Roberts as Charlotte. 4-H alumnus Reba McEntire, as well as other noteworthy actors including Robert Redford, Cedric the Entertainer, Oprah Winfrey and Cathy Bates portrays the other barnyard animals. Charlotte’s Web features the 4-H Emblem multiple times, and the themes portrayed speak directly to 4-H’s great work developing youth—building friendships, committing to goals and having fun!. Charlotte’s Web is a classic tale of dedication, friendship and loyalty. Those values are intrinsic to the 4-H Youth Development. As the only educational youth development program connected to state’s land-grant colleges and universities, 4-H encourages young people to use their head, heart, hands and health to become strong, confident and contributing citizens. Similarly, in Charlotte’s Web, Fern uses her head, heart, hands and health to encourage family and friends to save Wilbur from the smokehouse. With help from Wilbur’s barn friends, especially Charlotte, Fern’s dream comes true when she is able to take Wilbur to her town’s 4-H Fair. Fern’s hard work and dedication to Wilbur shows exactly the level of commitment young people make in 4-H – whether they are raising a pig, designing a Web site or participating in local community service activities, they give their best in whatever they do. Fern exemplifies the essential elements of 4-H Youth Development – belonging, mastery, independence and generosity – as she helps to save Wilbur and brings the community together. For some, the book is the first step to a love of learning and sharing. 4-H works to open that same door for young people to learn leadership, citizenship and life skills. The national 4-H leadership has developed an exciting fundraising opportunity for Kentucky 4-H in conjunction with Charlotte’s Web. For every ticket certificate purchased to see Paramount Pictures and Walden Media's production of Charlotte's Web through www.fourhcouncil.edu, a $1 donation will be made by Hollywood Movie Money to 4-H to support Kentucky 4-H. Kentucky 4-H programs will receive 100 percent of donations as determined by ZIP codes entered at certificate purchase. So tell your families, friends, colleagues, coworkers, schoolmates, church members, and everyone you meet to purchase their tickets to Charlotte’s Web through www.fourhcouncil.edu. Charlotte’s Web ticket sales through www.fourhcouncil.edu begin December 8, 2006. Clicking on the “Buy Movie Tickets” link will take you to a purchase page at Hollywood Movie Money. Here you will enter a ZIP code and buy as many tickets as you like via credit card. The price of the ticket is determined by your local movie theater. Then you print a ticket certificate that you redeem at the theater. Be sure to get to the movie theater in plenty of time for the showing you want to attend; although the holder of a certificate is guaranteed admission to a showing of Charlotte’s Web, the certificate does not hold you a seat in a particular showing. So get in line early! Seeing Charlotte’s Web is a wonderful family opportunity, a great way to learn about the values of 4-H and a way to raise money for the Kentucky 4-H program, For more information about Breathitt County 4-H which is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.
