Ambulance Involved In Cr
ash
A trip to Jackson Wednesday turned treacherous for an Owsley County ambulance service on a routine call to pick-up a dialysis patient from the Wal-Mart Shopping Center.  The accident occurred on Hwy. 30 West, approximately 4.5 miles from Jackson and involved Allen’s Ambulance, of Booneville, and Rebecca Gayheart, of Jackson. According to police, Gayheart, driving a Pontiac Grand-Am, crossed over into the eastbound lane striking the ambulance causing both vehicles to veer off the highway into a neighboring mountain. While ambulance personnel—Ben Nickell and Hugh Allen Moore--suffered only minor injuries, Gayheart was airlifted to a Huntington, WV hospital with a potentially broken pelvis.  Both, Nickell and Moore were transported to Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson but were later released. Nickell is an EMT and was the driver of the 1998 Ford ambulance. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen Gayheart driving recklessly just before the accident had occurred. In a telephone interview, Mr. Nickell stated that when he saw Gayheart coming around the curve, she was traveling at a high rate of speed. At press time, no charges have been filed and weather appears not to have been a factor but is still under investigation by Kentucky State Police Trooper Kevin Hu
