| Hyden Baptist bible School
The kids that went to Hyden Baptist Bible School this year had a great week! Parents and family and friends attended the final ceremony complete with awards and certificates and entertainment from the children. A lot of work goes into these Bible camp programs as some of the staff workers will testify, but the end result is well worth the effort. All the workers deserve recognition for what they do, but this year especially, we'd like to mention Darrell Joseph for his part, and Lillian Judd, who works tirelessly every year, yet, shows no signs of letting up! She's dedicated to the cause and the yearly Bible School is just one part of Lillian's ministry. Congratulations to Roger Wolfe, Pastor of Hyden Baptist, for a dedicated congregation and wonderful Church Leadership! Pool Open to Public Now For those of you who have anxious kids waiting for the county pool to open, wait no more! The pool opened officially last Wednesday, and the new paint made the pool as beautiful as ever. With it's new "face lift" and some familiar faces too,it seems like business as usual! You might want to check the admission fees, and think about a season pass. there are great savings in a season pass if you use the pool frequently. As you can see in the photo, Life Guards and management staff are ready, willing and able to make the summer quite enjoyable. Get out and bring the family. It's a great place to spend some quality time with your children. Poke Sallet and "New Mountain" The 52nd annual Poke Sallet Festival was held 5/31 thru June 2nd, and Terry Muncy's current regional hit "It's a Harlan Thang" was debuted live on the main stage by four Leslie Countians! The regional favorite for local airplay has been the most requested song by Harlan radio listeners, and the songs theme of growing up in a "coal camp" environment hits home with many Eastern Kentuckians. Terry wanted to form a local group just for the purpose of performing live in this region and chose some local Leslie County musicians and singers to form the group, "New Mountain". The group consists of Terry Muncy on lead vocals and guitar, John Gilbert on vocals and lead guitar, Helen Morgan on vocals and backup harmony, and Ishi Wooton on violin. The group has a unique sound with a goal set to showcase the song and the singer with just the right amount of music, and "on that note", the group will be returning to Harlan on June 23rd for a "Live Radio" performance and a spot on the stage for the "Goin' Back To Harlan" festival! Check your local listings for stage times. Visit www.terrymuncy.com for more info on the group and upcoming events and sales of "Terry Muncy and New Mountain" music. Photo Here Relay For Life,'07 This years' relay for Life did not draw as big a crowd as last year, but the enthusiasm of those that did participate was exceptional! Beth Baker did a great job with our national anthem, singing accapella, and Ray Wilson did a great job as M.C. as well! Fred Brashear was given a humanitarian award for his long involvement with the American Cancer Society through the Hyden Citizens bank, Fred being the president, and the bank being a long time Corporate sponsor. Highlites were cancer survivors walking the track with their banners and other groups as well, who helped collect donations and funds, walked in groups throughout the ralley. Music made by Shannon Morgan and Backwoods, was a crowd pleaser, and other groups took the stage later on in the evening. kids enjoyed several inflatables at the site, and everyone loved the food. "Kudos" to the Hyden Citizens Bank group for the excellent Cajun style "Jambalaya"! My, My, had me lookin' for 'da gumbo! "Warts" For Sale? While in the clinic here in Hyden, waiting for a Doctors' appointment, I listened to, and participated in a conversation in the "waiting room" about home remedies for wart removal. I was there as a bystander waiting with a friend of mine when the discussion came up. One lady told us that one home remedy for wart removal, was to sell the wart. Someone would give you a coin for the wart, rub it on the wart and throw the coin away, and in a day or two the wart would disappear! you were not supposed to look for the coin because if you found it, the wart would come back! Now, to me, this sounds exactly like a process which has all the ear marks of a government program! first of all, any one willing to buy a wart from another, is throwing their money away anyway, and then to turn right around and literally throw it away again, well now, that's absolutely governmental! It is such an astounding method of financial blight, I'm willing to bet you could get a grant for a feasability study, and if it turns out as wasteful as it sounds, you could probably get another grant to start your wart buying business! Eventually, your wart thwarting business would be eligible for research grants, production grants and another feasability grant to see if your wart buying business warrants outsourcing, in which case, all of the wart buying would take place by telephone from India! There is one drawback! I'm afraid there would be great opposition from the long line of Presidential candidates! After all, it would be tragic if this new "wartbased" method of squandering money, could somehow wind up in the "hands"of Al -Quida! From Israel to Leslie County Roger Elbel and his wife Kathy, have been in the missinary field for over 20 years. A good portion of that time, they have spent in Israel, and other Middle East countries. Their calling is to bring the Gospel to Islam and other Middle East religions including the Jewish faith. During their 3 day visit to Leslie County, they have inspired the congregation of the CMA church in Essie, Ky.,by sharing their experiences living and working in the mission fields. Approximately 6 hours of presentation (over a 3 day period) could barely scratch the surface of their mission, but the "Gospel Sharing" couple made us proud to be aquainted with the two of them. They have traveled the world for the sake of the Gospel, and our prayers go with them where ever they might go next. We only hope their travels will bring them back to Leslie County again, so more people here can share their experiences. "Hare Scrambles" Big Success! This last weekends' Motocross bike race and Hare Scrambles 4 wheeler races turned out to be a big success! Lots of news coverage, including ESPN sports TV! Sundays' schedule had bike races beginning at 11am., and 4 wheelers beginning at 3 pm. More than a dozen classes for bikes so we were only able to photograph two winners. We found Terry Roberts and his wife Jennifer on top of the mountain, and on top of the world because Terry (originally from Leslie County) had just won 1st place in the Heavy"B"class. Terry and wife Jennifer now live in London. A few moments later the 4 wheeler races began, and though we couldn't stay long enough to catch the winners of those classes, we did manage to get a photo of the winner of the womens' class bike race, Julie McWilliams, who was introduced to us by Terry and Jen Roberts.. Julie was riding an '06 RMZ 250. We took a lot of random photos, one of which is Dr. Bradley Davis who ran his green machine in the Vet C class, but a breakdown let him sit out the rest of the day as a spectator. Brad is a resident MD at U of Ky in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Sorry Brad, better luck next time. the rest of the photos we'll share with you through a collage. take a good look and see if there's somebody you know there! Photo Here Batting a Thousand We caught these guys working on a project and couldn't resist a picture of a "work in progress"! The Advanced Carpentry Class from the Leslie County Vocational School under the watchful eye of Mr. Pennington, is building the framework for some new batting cages. The boys have an estimated completion date of May 24th, just in time for graduation. Good job fellas', you're "battin' a thousand!" Photo A "Stitch in Time"... Have you ever wondered how long it takes to "hand stitch" a big beautiful quilt? The amount of time it took for Peggy Hacker's "Presidential Seal" quilt can only be estimated because the actual stitching was done by multiple hands. Peggy estimates approximately 20 hours a week on her part and then the Ladies Auxiliary at the Jabez Missionary Church of God had a hand in it too! 4 members on Wednesday nights for 6 months stitched their way down this "patriotic path"and the end results are beautiful to say the least. Thousands upon thousands of stitches applied to the material from a pattern found at Paul's Discount on rt 27 in Somerset, Ky,only confirms my suspicions! Our forefathers couldn't have made this great country what it is without the ForeMothers! Congratulations to Peggy Hacker and friends for all your hard work! It's a labor of love! Photo Leslie "Heat" hits Pizza Hut! Troy Stidham, coach of the Leslie "Heat" girls basketball "All Stars" team made good on his promise! "Win two games in a row, and I'll take the team for pizza!" The girls won game 1 in Perry County on Saturday, and Sunday's game in Knott County was the clincher! The Leslie County All Stars team beat the Knott County "Lady Tigers" , with a final score of 32-13! The girls made good on their "obligation' and were filled with pizza, and coach Stidham proves, time after time, he can keep a promise! Thanks also to the parents, and grandparents, and supporters that attend these games. Our kids depend on all of us. Photo Stinnett Students Meet Governor Fletcher Stinnett "A" club 6th graders lined the lobby walls at Mary Breckinridge Hospital in Hyden, for a chance to meet and greet Governor Ernie Fletcher. 25 students involved in "Walk Across Kentucky" were the lucky representatives of a school project that involved walking the distance in miles equivalent to the distance from Eastern Ky to the Mississippi River. The project coincides with Governor Fletcher's plan to "Get Healthy Kentucky". Frontier Nursing Service Representatives, including Mike Rust, FNS Board of Governors, and Nathan Lee ,President and CEO of FNS were on hand to greet Governor Fletcher as well as City of Hyden Mayor, Lonnie Hendrix,Leslie County Judge Exec. Jimmy Sizemore, and Leslie County Clerk, James Lewis. A host of other onlookers and well wishers attended as well as TV and News reporters from the local area. Photo Here Baker Signs With Morehead S.U. A couple years ago, we witnessed the signing of Dusty Baker to Union College. This time, it was younger brother Timmy Baker's time to shine! A large crowd gathered to witness Timmy Baker signing with Morehead State University, at the Leslie County High School Library. The enthusiastic crowd of well wishers was complete with team mates, school mates, family, friends, and Television and News cameras! 19 year old Timmy Baker from Wooton holds the school record for tackles at 303! The list of sports stats goes on and on, but this youngest son of Arlene and Paul Baker has another set of stats that also deserve recognition. Coach Tim Koogler commented on Timmy's role as a "Team Player" and teacher Shannon Crisp described Timmy as a "Class Act"! Timmy himself, summed it up with his "Thank You" speech when he listed his priorities. Thanking God first, his Mom and Dad, and his older brother Dusty, who Tim described as his "best friend". He thanked his grandparents, his coaches, his team mates, friends, and all his supporters. True to his beliefs, and his commitments Timmy Baker is, as described, a "Class Act". A special visit from the Mayor of the City of Hyden confirms this, when Mayor Lonnie Hendrix presented Timmy with a certificate of "Honorary Citizenship" of the City of Hyden. We all wish this 4 year, Varsity Linebacker well in his career, and we recognize that it is families like the Bakers, that help to instill our sense of pride in our community. Photo Here Jail Tax Proposal,Sore Subject in Leslie County A proposed tax of 5 % on Leslie Countians insurance premiums has been on the table now since the first of the year. The tax would raise existing premiums and the monies collected by the insurance companies would be sent back to Leslie County to offset the hugely escalated cost of operating the new jail. We were told at the onset of negotiating the contracts that the jail would begin a "profit phase" at 75% of capacity. Now, it seems, according to actual figures, that even at full capacity there would be a "shortfall" of anywhere from $600 thousand, to $800 thousand per year. Add that "shortfall" figure to the bond issue payment of $500 thousand for the next 30 years and you have a fiscal court "fiasco"! Many of those citizens attending the meeting voiced their concerns but the issues remain unresolved. Imagine if you will, buying a race horse to enter in the Kentucky Derby with all the promise of winning, and before the delivery van gets back out on the highway, your horse drops dead! That would be disheartening to say the least, but odds are, this horse was "dead" before it ever got delivered. It is also my understanding that May 1st, the County will be presented with another bill for $1.2 million dollars. "I'll put my money on the bob-tail nag...somebody bet on the Bay"! Photo Here Chicken ain't "chicken"... This chicken ain't "chicken", even in 20 degree weather! He must be workin' on his "nest egg" because even the cold couldn't ruffle this chicken's feathers! Our chicken will remain anonymous but his plight is well understood. A job is a job, even at $5.50 per hour, ( goin' rate for chicken promo, chicken suit furnished...) Hardee's of Hyden had this chicken sandwich two-fer sale goin' on and "suitably"... had their "wing held" sign right out front! Photo CMA gives "Perfect Attendance Awards"... Each year, Ms. Rachel Davison of the Christian Missionary and Alliance Church in Stinnett awards perfect attendance pins to those church members who meet the criteria for the whole year. This year so far, there have been three pins awarded, one to Helen Morgan of Short Creek for her 13th consecutive year of perfect attendance and to John Hacker, for his 14th year, and to John's wife Peggy Hacker for her 15th year of perfect attendance. These church members are dedicated and deserve recognition for that dedication and we are proud to give them our congratulations! Photo Ryan "Rhino" Howard signs scholarship Ryan Howard, nick-name "Rhino" was honored by team members and classmates as he signed his football scholarship deal with Pikeville College. The 18 year old running back from Lower Bad Creek, Greasy, in Leslie County, holds some record stats, including "lead rusher" in school history! Coach Tim Koogler has seen many Leslie County Eagles leave the nest, but this one takes to the sky with 250 tackles under his wing, and nearly 80 career touch downs! "Rhino" has proved to be as good on defense as he is on offense, and Pikeville College coaching representative Jeremy Barnes says Pikeville will be glad to have Ryan on their team in the fall. Ryan is one of 3 sons of Coy and Karen Howard. Ryan's father Coy, and brothers, Joe and Blake, were also present at the signing ceremony, which took place Monday, at the Leslie County High School Library. Helen Morgan of Short Creek, and Ms. Davison, pic 4 John and Peggy Hacker of Muncy's Creek. L-r Coach Tim Koogler, Ryan Howard, Ryan's Dad, Coy howard "A Harlan Thang" That's the title of singer/ songwriter Terry Muncy's new CD! "More Mountain Flavor Than Ever..." is the way I'd have to describe it. The original idea of a video about growing up in a coal camp in Harlan County sparked the verses of the song "Harlan Thang", and before the video was completed, Terry was getting lots of air play on Harlan radio and surrounding areas. Terry paints a musical "Portrait" of the lives of "Coal Camp Kids" growing up in lean times and waitin' for Daddy to come home from the mines. There's also a new cut on "Black Ice On Pine Mountain" and some never before released compositions that will take you on a musical journey full of down home Mountain Country Blues! "Who is this guy" you might ask... well, his new CD will give you a glimpse of who he is and what he's all about. There's a "New Mountain Flavor" in the hills of Kentucky, and the recipe is all Muncy. This album CD "Harlan Thang" is 'cookin'! Dobro, Banjo, Harmonica, and Terry's unique style of vocals, make "A Harlan Thang" his "Best Yet"! Visit Terry's website where his CD is available and call your local radio station and request some Muncy music...it'll do you good! Terry's website is www.terrymuncy.com. Stinnett Elementary Homecoming Queen There was a "standing room only " crowd at Stinnett Elementary School as the 2007 "Homecoming Queen" was "crowned". The candidates waited anxiously as the winning name was announced and 6th grader, Laci Maggard walked away with the bouqet and the title! Congratulations Laci, for being the "favorite" this year! Photo #1 Photo #2 Raleigh and Cindy's 60th Everybody knows that sometimes marriage can be a rough road. A big percentage of married couples aren't married anymore. Divorce statistics in our country are "staggering' to say the least, and a lot of marriages wind up on the "rocks". This married couple managed to smoothe out the rough parts ( if there were any...) and passed many "milestones" in their marriage, including their 60th anniversary! On December 28th, 2006, Raleigh and Cindy Morgan celebrated their 60th, in private, but last Saturday at the Hyden Baptist church, their lives and their marriage were applauded by long time friends and "well-wishers" who came together to celebrate the occasion and honor these two wonderful people and their "long term" marriage. Roger Wolfe, Pastor of Hyden Baptist, spoke of the kind of respect and caring it takes to make a marriage that will last and pointed out that Raleigh and Cindy certainly have what it takes. After the celebration and the dinner, anniversary cake, and great fellowship, the "Blessed" couple opened their gifts. Everyone knew as they completed their celebration, that Raleigh and Cindy already have the greatest gift of all, "God" in their marriage! Congratulations to the Morgans! Photo Here Ultra-sound Scans I recently read an article where it is stated that ultra-sound scans on unborn fetuses could cause brain cell misplacement problems in the unborn fetus. Since the development of the ultra-sound scan, it has become popular to have the scan to determine the first week of pregnancy, the sex of the fetus etc., but most usually these days, ultra-sound scans have been performed for the "scrapbook" photo of the fetus, which is purely non-medical. This is the first time any thought has been given to what the effects might be on the fetus, like everything else, in medicine, there seems to be a rush to go ahead and do it, the old "shoot first and ask questions later" syndrome. I find it amazing that after years of performing these scans for multiple purposes, we are just now becoming aware that brain cell placement could be affected. It is even thought by some researchers that disorders such as mental retardation, dyslexia, autism, schizophrenia, etc., could be caused by ultra-sound, according to a recent report in the National Academy of Sciences. Since I haven't written a "Just My Opinion" in a while, (something I would have contributed to writers block or lack of time, etc.) I think I'll go back and look in my baby picture scrapbook and see if my parents have one of those ultra-sound pics tucked away in there. Oh well, this is one photo mishap they can't blame on the paparazzi! Expecting mothers choose to do this on their own, with encouragement of course, from one of those young doctors who have also been scanned! Thanks, FDA and researchers! It's not like we didn't have enough to worry about, now is it? Celebrating Seniors Leslie County Senior Citzens at the Tim Lee Carter Building celebrated the birthdays of two Senior Citizens this week. Pictured are Betty Mosley, (pianist from "Young At Heart") and Robert Asher. Betty's birthday was January 11, and Robert's was the 15th. The seniors in attendance got to enjoy a delicious frozen Ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. Although we were curious, no one asked the question of how old either one is. We'll leave that up to the age guessers! Photo Here Swearing In Ceremony had "New Atmosphere" The "swearing in" ceremony performed at 2p.m. on Sunday Dec. 31, had all the trappings of official business with an added bonus! James Lewis began the opening remarks and DAV chapter 133 presented our flag, and those attending were treated to Hannah Meltons' rendition of our National Anthem. Maybe, that set the stage..,or maybe it was Pastor Wayne Bowlings' "invocation'... or Judge Renee Muncys' introduction of judge R.Cletus Maricle, who administered the oath of office to Leslie County's newly elected officials, or, it may have even been the oath of office for each individual elected official. Something "sparked" the "New Atmosphere" I'm referring to.There seemed to be a unity forming, a "community consciousness" unlike any we have seen in the past! Each "oath" was administered and "sworn to" with a certain air of confidence. The first official public utterance( after his oath..) of our new County Judge Executive, Jimmie Sizemore, seemed to be the "glue" that would connect the "whole" of the new administration, by promising that "We all will work together" and then introducing the Rev. Paul Collett who summed it all up with a vision of a new and "bright" horizon."Family" comes to mind as each official there was and is "family oriented". Although many photos were taken of each of our officials, one photo depicts the "bonus" I referred to and reflects the "New Atmosphere". it's a family photo presenting our new County Judge Executive. My hope is that it is also a "portrait of our future"! That "togetherness" that we will need to reach those "bright horizons". Photo Here Out With The Old, In With The New! So... you had forgotten how much "stuff" you accumulated over the past year... that is, until you tried to find all the pieces to the seven foot fire proof, "looks just like a real one" fold up, simulated, blue spruce Christmas tree that still had some decorations on it from last year, that you conveniently put in the attic for safe keeping. You thought it was right there handy, and easy to get to, and it probably was, a year ago,but somehow it got covered up with STUFF! " Where did all this stuff come from"... you ask yourself, and, "how come I have to untangle the outside lights from the inside lights?" Well "fear not"... relief from over accumulation is right around the corner! It's New Years' "resolution time"! it's time to resolve to get rid of that extra weight you put on for the holidays! It's time to resolve to quit smoking! it's time to give up bad habits and be more health conscious.! Oh yes, and it's time (actually, past due time...) to get rid of all that extra STUFF! After all, you have to make room for all the NEW STUFF you got for Christmas! Happy New Year! Ipods,XBoxes and Bears, Oh My... This year, I believe Santa must have been scratching his head wondering where to get all these newfangled electronic gadgets that he found on his Christmas List. Times sure have changed since "electric trains"! Just when you've got all your elves trained to be "Master Train Builders", somebody comes up with a new invention! One teenager had requested a "bluetooth adapter"...to which this Santa replied,"What in the world is a bluetooth adapter?" As a matter of fact "What is BLUETOOTH...and why does it need an ADAPTER? Oh well, it's a good thing the people who work in Walmarts' electrical department are "up" on the latest technology, otherwise it would have been a mighty "slim" Christmas! Well now that Christmas has come and gone, I believe Santa will be reading up on the latest gadgets! Next year, instead of writing a letter to Santa, you can just take a picture of what you want for Christmas on your Cell phone or text message the North Pole with your request! Maybe, by next year Santa will be computer literate and we can all email him! Happy New year to all, including Santa! Photo Here "Christmas cheer" from LC High School to Senior Citizens Last Tuesday morning brought some "Christmas Cheer" to the Senior Center when Leslie County High School students brought their annual gift baskets and passed them out to Senior Citizens. Each Senior Citizen received a gift bag of fresh fruit, hard Christmas candy, and Christmas cookies. The Seniors enjoyed Christmas Carols sung by the students, some of which were accessorized with Santa hats, and reindeer antlers. We caught some of the reindeer and Santa regalia outside as a steady stream of students made their way back to class. Photo Here Science Fair At Stinnett A Science Fair on Thursday morning, Dec 7th organized by Stinnett Middle School's Kim Morgan and Kristin Kreitzer developed into a pleasant surprise for Principal Britt Lawson and everyone who attended. 6th grade students were paired up as teams and given 3 weeks to pick a science project to complete and present at the science fair. Mrs. Wilder's homeroom and Mrs. Roark's homeroom both produced 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Judges Vickie Garrison, Barbara Hoskins, John C. Garrison and Anthony Little,(all central office staff) judged the projects and presentations based on 9 different categories which included the students abilities to present and demonstrate their individual projects. All projects were pre-approved and students were coached on the scientific methods of how to complete their projects, but the presentations and demonstrations were by the design of each team. Types of projects ranged from how to detect electrical charges and how to design air powered rockets to explaining the earth's magnetic field, growing bacterial cultures and lightning safety, just to name a few. Mrs. Wilder's homeroom produced 1st place winners Sydney Smith and Kennedi Caldwell, 2nd place winners Cassundra Rice and Makayla Morgan and 3rd place winners Keisha Freeman and Chelsea Asher. Mrs. Roark's homeroom winners were 1st place winners Ashley Morgan and Laci Maggard, 2nd place winners Tori Mcintosh and Brianna Europa, and 3rd place winners Krista Roberts and Samantha Couch. Parents and families of all the Stinnett Middle School students can be proud of the staff and students of this school and their scholastic abilities. Congratulations on a job well done!. Photo Here "Tis' The Season..." Members of the "Young At Heart" vocal group performed at the Hyden Baptist Church last Saturday evening. Other singers also performed as the "season" was officially "ushered" in by a Christmas Program designed and co-ordinated by Lillian Judd, long time member of Hyden baptist and also of the group "Young At Heart". Several solos were performed from members of the group, and Hyden Baptist Pastor, Roger Wolfe also joined in the singing, adding to a well rounded program of "choice Christmas songs." the sought after group, "Young At Heart" will perform for several more functions before Christmas, helping to bring Christ's Christmas Message in song, to many of us here in the mountains. Those in attendance also received a "rare treat" with a splendid solo vocal performance by the groups' long time "piano officianado", Betty Mosley Photo Here New County Judge Executive's Perspective on the coming New Year County Judge Executive "elect", Jimmy Sizemore takes office the beginning of January,'07. Jimmy says..."I'm a little bit anxious, a little bit nervous', but I'm ready to go"! The normal issues are always in the forefront, but new ideas and better solutions can also "top the list" of things to look forward to in a County Judge Executives' first term. Three solid days of local government seminars in Louisville (thurs, friday, and saturday this week) will help prepare our County Judge elect for his new position. "I know the people depend on me", Jimmy says,..." and I'll try to do my best to meet their expectations. I want to create new opportunities for our people.I also want to thank all the voters for putting their trust in me. I want all of us to be looking forward to a brighter future for Leslie County. We all need to work together! Together we can get things done" Indian Summer? These last few days of warmer weather remind me of Indian Summer...which reminded me of some hands on experience that students from Leslie County got to enjoy. For the 5th time in 8 years, Shannon Crisp, 8th grade Social Studies/American History teacher, had his students participate in this "hands on demonstration of how "Plains Indians had to cope with everyday life. The Teepee and surroundings was fully functional, and students spent time this fall, learning the basics. this warmer weather gave me the segway to allow readers to see photos of this past experience. Thanks to Shannon Crisp, and all who participated. Instruction included tanning hides, grinding corn, and basket and mat weaving. Wolfe and Sons Grand Opening Has Good Turnout Last Saturday's grand opening at Wolfe and Sons Funeral Home (formerly Kemper's Furniture location) on 421 across from Lewis' Market, drew a crowd of well wishers to the new facility."Spacious" and "comfortable" are the two words that best describe this facility, along with "beautifully peaceful" which describes the atmosphere. Three chapels, a private arrangement room, huge family "sitting room', kitchenette, and a large "casket display" room make up the main floor. The largest chapel will seat 200 and is equipped with video screen for photographic memorials, etc. Roger Wolfe is the pastor of Hyden Baptist Church, and we wish Roger and sons, Jason and Kyle, the very best. Veterans Honored Veterans were honored on Veterans Day at a small ceremony held downtown Hyden, but on Sunday, in a seperate ceremony at the Christian Missionary and Alliance church in Stinnett Ky., these Vets were honored by church members, family and friends and visitors. Poems were read by church members and special music was performed and two of these veterans, John Hacker and "Dean" Taylor also performed readings. We appreciate our Veterans and special thanks to Rachel Davidson, for her special efforts in honoring those who have served our country. Each Veteran received a gift and the ceremony was greatly appreciated. the Vets from L-R are John Gilbert, Edmond Osborne, John Hacker, Howard Napier, "Dean" Taylor Magistrate "Elect"... 600 plus votes brings a new magistrate to office after the first of the year. Johnny Ray Caldwell takes a moment to thank his supporters and is greatful for their confidence in him as an elected official. Johnny won the election by a fairly wide margin, with over 300 votes between him and his closest opponent. Johnny is a 57 year old lifelong resident of Leslie County. He spent his early childhood in Middlefork and his teen years in Rockhouse. After 20 years with Moore lumber Co., he spent eight years in Hardware sales with Big Sandy Hardware Co., and the last 4 years as a Maintenance Supervisor for our county. He decided to run for office to be able to apply a deeper dedication to the position of Magistrate, and apply sharper focus to the issues and needs of the people. Johnny Ray says... " Big buildings and Skyscrapers are good...but we need to focus on the basics first". The basics referred to are roads, bridges and water. Johnny Ray is looking forward to his new challenge and new position, and keeping his promise to voters by "doing his very best"! Wooton Presbyterian welcomes "Young At Heart" Last Monday evening many ceremonies around the country were held on behalf of the 9/11 tragedy. One such ceremony was held at the Wooton Presbyterian Church where folks from the area came to listen to "Young At Heart" perform their particular arrangements of "patriotic" songs. Known mostly for their Gospel music ministry, the "ever popular" group can also get your "red, white, and blue blood" flowing too! There's something about those vocals with Betty Mosley's piano accompaniment that can bring tears to a true American or Christian, and make the hair stand up on the back of your neck when they perform songs like America the Beautiful or the Battle Hymn of the Republic. We will try to print the Young At Heart scedule a time or two for their upcoming performances so that some of you might get to hear them when they perform at an event near you. Photo#1 City of Hyden Remembers 9/11 Leslie Countians gathered in rememberance of the 9/11 tragedy on the fifth anniversary of the attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, on 9/11/2001. Law enforcement vehicles, Fire trucks, and first responder vehicles made procession down Main Street in Hyden, and ceremonies were performed by members of the D.A.V. and later, a candle light vigil, in regards to those who lost their lives, over three thousand Americans and others, including those "first responders" who were killed in the efforts to save the lives of those who were trapped in the twin towers. Americans should never forget those precious souls and the bravery of everyone involved. Photo #1 Photo#2 Hyden Hosts Great Gospel... from Great Falls,S.C. Leslie Countians were blessed with "Great Gospel" singing from a man from Great Falls, South Carolina, at the Hyden Baptist Church last Thursday night. Scott Spangler, formerly of the gospel group "Naomi and the Segos" has traveled the world with the Gaither Homecoming Tour and performed with the Blackwood Brothers and other gospel greats including Mark Lowery and other great Gaither Tour performers. Born in Bristol,Tn., from a long line of funeral directors,(back to great grandad...)the now forty year old Scott lives and works (as a funeral director) in Great Falls, South Carolina. Scott began singing at age 14 and took his first group singing gig with the Blackwood Brothers at 18. Scott has performed in 49 of our 50 states, and sung in many far away countries including Africa. This full time funeral director, has found time to be an international recording artist, and takes his now solo music ministry on the road at least 100 dates a year. Scott is not only gifted and talented, he is compassionate and caring, and loves to share his music and his testimony with everyone. If you are familiar with the Gaither style of "entertainment with a purpose", you will feel right at home at a Scott Spangler performance. Scott's newest CD release "My Song Hasn't Ended"( friend Mark Lowery came up with the name..) is now available online at scottspangleronline.com. If you love Great Gospel music, you'll love Scott Spangler from Great Falls! |
