Old Man Martin 12-28-02 It was a cool morning, when old man Martin started towards Jackson. Martin was a 65 year old man who lived on Roses Branch up on Southfork. Martin would start out every day around 7:00am and usually get picked up by a friendly passerby. Today would be quite different. Martin had just finished his coffee when Mary, his wife asked him if he had his list of items to get while out. Martin hesitated a bit as he seemed a bit confused. After a moment or so, he answered her, "Honey what was it you wanted from town today?" Mary seemed a little confused, as Martin always had his list and his comment seemed a bit odd. Not paying much attention to the whole thing, she gave him a list of what she needed and Martin headed out the door. When Martin got to the end of the driveway, he stopped and looked around for a couple minutes. First he started up the road, then caught himself and turned around and started out of the holler. At the mouth of Roses Branch, Martin again stopped and looked around. After a few minutes he headed down the road. Billy came cruising down the road in his old blue Dodge truck and pulled up beside Martin. It was not uncommon for Billy to give Martin a ride to town when he found him walking. Billy rolled down his window and asked Martin, "Hey Mart, you need a ride into town?" Martin gave Billy an odd look and said, "No, I am just out walking." Billy told him to be careful, and drove off. It was now 8:30am, and Martin finally made it to the mouth of Southfork. As was his habit, he sat on the guardrail for a bit, to rest. While sitting there, Martin's neighbor Charles pulled up to asked sarcastically, if he could give Martin a ride. Charles & Martin never did get along. Martin said he was waiting on his wife Mary who went to get him some coffee. Oddly, Martin took out his wallet and offered to pay Charles for the coffee. Martin's wallet was full of money. Charles stared at the money and then drove off. In a few minutes, Deputy Hansburger stopped to see if he could give Martin a ride. Martin told him he was waiting on Billy, that Billy would be right back to get him. Hansburger seemed content with the answer and got back in the Cruiser and headed towards town. After a little bit, Martin got up and started walking towards town. Just past the Highway 30 turnoff a man in a blue chevy truck pulled up to Old man Martin. He told Martin he had been hunting for him. Martin looked at him a minute then asked him if he was there to take him home. The man replied that he was. Martin got in the vehicle and the man took off. When the two men arrived in Jackson at the old Dollar Store, the Man in the Blue chevy truck, told Martin that the ride cost him $5.00 for gas. Martin took out his wallet which was busting with cash. Martin hated using banks. Martin handed the wallet to the man and told him to get out the $5.00. The man saw the cash and got a bit excited. He told Martin he needed to get home before something happened to him, carrying all this money. Martin got out of the truck. After spending a couple hours waking around town Martin finally walked in to the grocery store. He got a few things then headed to the register. he pulled out his wallet and payed for his items. The guy at the register seemed a little nervous when he looked at all the money. Martin headed out the door. Hours passed and Martin never made it home. Mary called the police to tell them Martin had not made it home. It was 6:00pm and he wasn't there. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin was missing several had a motive, but only one person committed the crime. What was the motive & who committed the crime. The first one to email the correct answer will win a gift from Breathitt Online Gift Store.
SOLUTION Although everyone had a motive for the crime, only Charles & the wife had true motives. Charles and Matin's wife were having an affair. Charles and Martin did nt get along at all. Charles was only making sure Martin was gone, and Martin's wife made it a point to give him her own list, when Martin normally had his own list.
WINNING RESPONSE!!!!! Motive: Sex and money Martins wife Mary was having an affair with the neighbor next door with whom Martin didn't get along with. Mary and squeeze (Charles) the neighbor, conspired to get rid of Martin for the dough. Colleen Kats
Martins wife Mary was having an affair with the guy in the blue chevy pickup. Why was the guy in the blue chevy pickup looking for Martin and who told him where Martin was. Only the wife could have told him Martin was on the way to town with a wallet full of money with an extra list, the one Martin always took and Mary's additonal list. Mary did this to further confuse Martin. Mary the man in the blue chevy pickup were having an affair and they soon got rid of him soon after he left the grocery store. signed: S. Short
Ok, first there was no crime, as far as a motive, it was beer. Ya see, Old Martin ran into his pal OH and they got some one to take them to the County Line where they got a couple cases of beer.....Now Old Martin ain't missin, he's just sleepin it off at OH's place. LOL Just a little humor ya'all. caveman I think Martin just got lost.He seemed confused before he went out. He didn't know what he was doing. If anyone did it , it was probably Charles, but I think he just got Alzheimers and got lost. Thanks Marie Craft the guy in the blue chevy truck commited the crime and the motive was money. P. Bucklin There hasn't been a crime committed, yet. See old martin has been dazed and confused all day and it has taken him more time than usual to complete normal day tasks. In the mystery it says that he heads toward the door at the grocery store, it didn't say that he made it out the door. So at 6:00 pm when Mary calls the police, old Martin is still at the grocery. thanks Reed Thomas

Nightmare at Whick 2-15-03 It was Wednesday night, as Sheriff Dodd was making his rounds when the call came in. "Sheriff Dodd", the dispatcher waled, "There has been another killing at Whick." "Where at", asked the Sheriff? Dispatcher Hurley explained where the body was, and Sheriff Dodd took off. Sheriff Dodd arrived at the scene in a wooded area just up Little's Creek Road. Already there was a crowd gathered around the scene, making it nearly impossible to check for tracks and other important evidence. This was the 5th killing already in the area in the past 3 months. This time it was 35 yeard old Calvin Tufoy. Calvin was a local strong arm man who helped collect money for certain undesirables. This made it more difficult, as the list of suspects was huge. One thing that caught Sheriff Dodd's eye was the 4 wheeler tracks near the scene. Although 4 wheelers in this part of the country was no big deal at all, these particular tracks seemed fresh and wider than normal. He also noticed drag marks about 10 feet long. It appeared that the body had been moved from one spot to another. After surveying the scene Dodd looked at the body for preliminary clues before the coroner arrived to do his job. There was a .45 revolver laying near the left hand of Calvin. Dodd noticed the body had, what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the chest, but the victim looked blue in color. Dodd noted this and asked that a plaster cast be made of the 4 wheeler track. He hoped to be able to compare it with the 4 wheelers in the area. Dodd looked about the crowd and notice there were 4 people on 4 wheelers at the scene. He also remembered seeing a truck with a 4 wheeler on it sitting at the crossroads at the mouth of Littles Creek Road. He instructed his deputies to round up the 4 wheelers and asked them to meet near the truck with the 4 wheeler on it. Sheriff Dodd began by checking each 4 wheeler hoping to eliminate suspects who's tires did not match. Amazingly the one in the bed of the truck and two others all had wider tires. But this did however, eliminate 2 suspects. Dodd began to question the men and found that all 3 suspects had motives for killing Calvin. The first suspect, Terry Hillman was very small in stature and was known for running away from confrontations. He had a criminal record, but nothing more than petty crimes. Sheriff Dodd noticed Terry's 4 wheeler was caked in mud and appeared to have been driven for sometime without being cleaned. Sheriff Dodd asked Terry about the tires and Teryy told him he let the air out to give him better grip in mud and softer terrain. The 2nd suspect, the pick up owner, was named Marvin New. Marvin was known for some serious criminal activity and did not put up with a lot before becoming violent. He was very hesistant to answer questions and when asked about the tires and the width of them, he angrily noted that this was the brand for that 4 wheeler. The 4 wheeler itself did not look at that dirty and appeared to have only been riden a little bit if at all. Perry Newton, was the 3rd suspect and had been in and out of jail several times, 2 of which where for murder. Both murders were drug related. So Dodd knew Perry was a viable suspect. When asked about his tires, Terry was evasive saying first he did not know why they were like that, then changed his story to say that he also let the air out. The phone rang early Thursday morning and it was coroner Hibbett. He began to explain to Sheriff Dodd that the cause of death for Calvin Tufoy was drug overdose, given through a needle in the right arm. This raised doubts for Dodd as Calvin was right handed, and knew most needle users, use the predominant hand to do the injection. Coroner Hibbett also told Dodd the gunshot wound occured after the cause of death. Someone was trying to make it look like a self inflicted wound. With the information Dodd had gathered, knew he had his man. With 3 suspects, and all with good motives. Who Killed Calvin Tufoy, and how was the crime committed?
| **CORRECT RESPONSE** I believe Perry Newton killed Calvin Terry. He drug overdosed him which was the cause of death and then shot him in the chest to make sure he had got the job done,or to possibly throw the police off the trail of the murder being drug related. K.Hurt I think it was Terry cause he seemed least likely with a clean 4 wheeler. I think they drugged him and then carried him to where he was found and then shot him to make it look like he tried to commit suicide. He tried to collect from Terry and Terry killed him. | Extra Body at the Jackson Cemetery Calvin and Amber were walking slowy up the winding path, holding hands, laughing and talking about their upcoming wedding. Amber was laughing at how she admired Calvin and always wanted to be with him. Calvin met Amber just weeks after Calvin's girlfriend Bridget was found dead near Harolds Pond. Police were having a tough time finding Bridget's killer. As Calvin and Amber rounded the curve, they spotted what looked to be a person leaning against a tombstone. As they got closer, they could see the long blonde hair, and the red jacket of the person sitting there. Calvin yelled out, "hey, are you all right?" The person did not respond. Both Amber & Calvin became a little nervous. Calvin moved a little closer and again nervously asked, "Are you alright?" Again there was no response. Amber told Calvin they should get out of there. Calvin told Amber he thought someone may have just been there. There were fresh tire tracks and what looked to be a small camp fire still smoldering. Calvin told Amber he was calling the Police. Amber told Calvin they should go home and call. She was afraid it would look suspicious if they called from there. Calvin & Amber hurriedly walked home and called the police when they got there. They told the police their story and where the person was sitting. An hour or so passed when there was a knock at the door. It was Jackson Police Officer Armis Porter. Porter asked Calvin to step outside. He told Calvin, it was too close to Halloween to be pulling pranks. Calvin asked him what he was talking about. Porter told Calvin, there was no body and there was no evidence whatsoever of someone being there, other than Calvin & Amber. Calvin told Porter he could describe the person from behind, and that the person had long blonde hair and a red jacket on. Porter told Calvin, there was noone there and he did not have time for his pranks. Calvin and Amber decided they would walk back to the cemetery and see for themselves. When they got near the area where they saw the body, they saw a glowing light and what appeared to be the same person walking away from them on the path. The person had on the same red jacket and had long blond hair. Calvin ran to catch up to the person but just as he neared them, they disappeared. When Calvin turned around, Amber was gone. He was frantically yelling and screaming for Amber, but she was no where to be found. Calvin knew if he called the police they would not listen to him, so he decided to go on home, and wait for Amber to come home. The next morning, while Calvin was on his way to work, Jackson Police got behind him and pulled him over. They approached his car with guns drawn and told him to get out and lay on the ground. Calvin asked what was going on. They told him he was under arrest for the murder of Amber. They told him they found her body exactly where they found Bridgets' 6 months ago. 6 months earlier, it was a frantic Calvin that called the police and told them his girlfriend Bridget was missing. He said he was asleep on the sofa when he heard his front door slam. He looked around and Bridget was gone. He did not see anything when he went outside, so he called the police. When the police arrived, they began their investigation and found no signs of a struggle or foul play. They began to search near by areas looking for signs of Bridget. The found nothing. Weeks passed before they got a break in the case. 2 young boys were going fishing at Harolds Pond when the saw a body leaned against a tree. They ran home and called the police. when the police got there, they found Bridget leaning against a tree, lifeless and cold. Her long blonde hair covered in blood, She was dead. They searched the area and found only tire tracks leading to the edge of the fence line surrounding the pond. They made tire casts and gathered what they could at the scene. They searched Bridgets red jacket for clues. In one of the pockets they found a letter. The letter found in Bridgets pocket was in very attractive handwriting, and stated only this phrase; "Forever I will haunt her." Who really killed Bridget and Amber, and why? | Double Trouble By: Elizabeth
Sid Barnes stood in front of his desk as his sixth period science class came into his tidy classroom. He knew that this class had to be the wildest and rudest class in the history of Breathitt County high school. Sid had been a science and health teacher for twenty years. He had really like teaching until this semester. The two worst students were grandchildren of a past classmate of his. These students like their grandfathers were the school bullies. These two seemed to enjoy disrupting his classes and making him angry. The class seemed to last forever. Sid kept thinking today is payday. After the dismissal bell he tidied his classroom. He found a drawing of himself with knives stuck all over his body. He stopped at the teacher's lounge. His best friend Principal Joe Downs was there. They talked about Sid's two nightmare students. "Ted threatened me with his grandfather today" Sid told his friend. His exact words were: "You know my grandpa shot his own dad and just think what he would do to you Barnes." Then his best pal Lisa said I could end up worse than shot. Sid gave his friend the drawing he had found in his classroom. Sid went to the furniture store. He gave the clerk a check for a down payment on a new gas water heater. He had tried to get his wife Sue to put in half but she had refused. He thought about Sue. She was selfish and stubborn as a mule, but she was an excellent cook and keep their home tidy. Sid thought he could sure have a worse wife. Sue Barns liked her job as an ophthalmologist assistant at least most of the time. Today she hated it. Her brother's ex-wife Ann came in. She had recently remarried. She had wedding pictures to show Dr. Rowland and Sue. Sue had to mention how young the groom looked. "Sue that mouth of yours will be the death of you someday" Ann muttered as she tried her new glasses. "She threatened you" Dr. Rowland told Sue after Ann left. Sue only laughed. She told Dr. Rowland that her ex-brother-in-law and his father was more dangerous than Ann and they hated her much worse. After work Sue bought a new tanning bed with her payday. She knew Sid would be furious but she really wanted it. She got so tired of Sid's nagging and stingy habits. She liked red wine but Sid hated for her to drink and he always nagged her about it but she knew Sid was a good provider and was a faithful husband so she knew she could do worse. Principal Joe Downs called the sheriff's dept. Monday morning at nine o'clock. His best teacher and friend Sid Barnes had not shown up for school. "He has never done anything like this before" Joe told the Sheriff. Joe went with the sheriff to Sid's house. There they found Sid on the living room couch. He was dead. They looked for Sue. They found her in her new tanning bed. Joe thought she looked like an overly done slice of toast. "Who could have killed this well respected and well like couple?" The sheriff asked over and over. ANSWER: Sid was so enraged because Sue had bought a new tanning bed instead of helping pay on the hot water heater that he killed her. He fixed her tanning bed so it would roast her. Sue had finally had enough of Sid's nagging and his stingy habits. She simply put out the pilot light on his new gas water heater before she got in her new tanning bed. |

I think Joe killed Sid because he was having an affair with Sue and knew Sid would never leave her. And Sid killed Sue because she bought that tanning bed and wouldn't help him buy anything they needed for the house. He was furious with her so he killed her.Why would the principal wait til 9 to call police when schools start at 8?! M. Hamblin
I don't think there was a murder committed. Sue after buying the tanning bed and a bottle of red wine decided to try out the bed. After tanning for a while and drinking the red wine she fell fast asleep. Sid being the stingy man that he was, installed the GAS water heater himself. Thinking Sue was not at home he decided to take a nap. The gas water heater malfunctioned and both Sid & Sue were overcome by the fumes before the tank ran out of gas. Peacefully dying in their sleep. efee
They were both over come by gases , because Sid incorrectly installed the gas water heater. StormyRose
I think Sid had a heart attack and died from all the stress he was under. And Sue drank too much red wine and fell asleep in the tanning bed. I think Sid had a heart attack and died from all the stress he was under. And Sue drank too much red wine and fell asleep in the tanning bed. J. Osborne
