This past week the United States was represented by certain members of Congress to visit Syria and other parts of the Middle East . This group of Congress took it upon themselves to become negotiators with the same countries that harbor terrorist and are known worldwide to do so. Everyone seems to be looking at the most high ranking official to visit Syria and rightfully so. Speaker of The House, Nancy Pelosi, not only met with Syrian officials, but went as far as to defy the request of the President of the United States to not go. One thing people have to understand is that she is Speaker of The House and not the President. She has no authority over foreign affairs unless it is in the house of Congress. This also applies to the other members of Congress, whether they are Republican or Democrat. Syria is known for their underhanded tactics. Many believe that if there were any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (yes, I said if) they were taken to Syria before the Iraqi invasion. This country has no love for the United States , nor any for Israel . But on this same visit, Speaker Pelosi held her hand out to Syria letting them know that we are ready to talk peace with them. She also stated that Israel was anxious to sit down and talk the same. What she failed to mention to Syrian officials is that neither President Bush nor Prime Minister Olmert asked Speaker Pelosi to represent them. Speaker Pelosi’s visit to Syria brings back memories of Liberals going to visit with Saddam Hussein back in the late 1990’s and early 2000. When it comes to the national security of the United States , I believe all partisanship needs to be thrown out the door. If the Republican and Democratic parties are only worried about who is going to be the next President or who will control the house and senate, then it is time that we stop and take a serious look where this country went wrong. Remember, it is “by the people and for the people”. Not “how do we get our party elected in the next election”. I am a true believer that we will never see peace in the Middle East . It would serve Speaker Pelosi to understand the same. The only thing that I can see her actually doing is providing Propaganda for the Terrorist. 4-02-07 Once again, we are at the point when High School Basketball will be starting back soon. I am a firm believer in certain aspects of the game and how it should not only be played, but also how it should properly be coached. Most High School Athletes look at his or her Coach as a leader and teacher of the game. As a true believer in sportsmanship and trying to teach a child the correct way to play, I have come up with a few things that I would hope everyone that Coaches any sport would look into. I hope some of it hits home. Some of these were remembered through reading and some are personal beliefs. I honestly believe that no Coach should put the value of winning a game above the value of instilling good character of each player. A coach needs to reinforce positive goals for all players. Teach them how to win, but if they lose, teach them how to do both well. A win with attitude is not celebrated long to those with a conscious. It is the responsibility of the Coach to make sure the field of play is a drug and alcohol free environment. A Coach has the responsibility to all the players to ensure this rule is applied. A good Coach may sometimes question a player or talk with the parents if a problem arises that is out of the ordinary. It is very important that the parents play a major role with their child in any sport they choose. The Coach must insist that players play in a safe environment at all times. The coach should promote the entire interscholastic program and emphasize that sports are only a part of the education process. The coach needs to direct his or her program in harmony with the total school program. Coaches should actively use their influence to encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, parents and officials at every game, practice or other youth sporting events. Coaches will teach his or her player/team to treat other players, parents, fans and officials with respect. Coaches should meet and exchange friendly greetings before and after a contest to set the correct tone for an event. The coach shall be acquainted thoroughly with the KHSAA and School policies, and is responsible for their interpretation to each player. The coach shall not try to seek an advantage by circumventing the point or letter of the rules. A coach must constantly uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact with student-athletes, officials, athletic directors, school administrators, the KHSAA, the media and public, the coach shall strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct. Do these theories work? Maybe not, but wouldn’t it be nice to go to a ball game and see these followed step by step? I understand that there will never be a perfect game played in any sport because someone has to win and someone has to be on the short end of the stick. I don’t know how many people actually take time to read my commentaries, but I can only hope that if the ones reading this have a child playing that maybe you might try to follow these and maybe pass this along to your child. I honestly believe that we have some of the finest coaches here in Eastern Kentucky, but sometimes they can be swayed not only by the outcome of the game but also the parents of their players. Here’s wishing the best to all the teams and schools in their upcoming seasons. 3-19-07 Recently it appears that each and every week I seem to come upon some story that rattles me. This week is no different thanks to Rosie O’Donnell. Apparently Rosie has once again been running her mouth. This time it is about terrorist Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who confessed to being the mastermind behind the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Free speech? Yes. Responsible? No! Rosie stated that the government got a false confession from Mohammed by using torture and “robbing him of his humanity”. Robbing him of his humanity? How about Mohammed robbing people of their loved ones back on 9-11-01? This man is a terrorist and nothing more. Mohammed also confessed to the 1st WTC attack among many other things. In total there were over 3,000 deaths that he is directly responsible for. Did he have compassion for any of those 3,000 people? Did he have compassion for beheading Daniel Pearl, which he also confessed doing? Right Rosie, we need to really show compassion to this guy. Rosie O’Donnell has completely lost her mind as far as I am concerned. She is the Queen of Idiots. In the past she has stated that we should not fear terrorist due to them also being mothers and fathers. I don’t see our mothers and fathers sending their children out with bombs strapped to them in order to kill infidels as the terrorist say. Rosie O’Donnell has always been against the NRA and the carrying of firearms also. She has been an outspoken critic of the NRA for many years. That is why Rosie O’Donnell had her body guard (remember, don’t fear terrorist) get a permit to carry a firearm. This is one of those “Do as I say and not as I do” things that she and many others live by. In closing, if Rosie wants to defend the terrorist who killed many Americans and cry for them, then let her go to their training camps and be their spokesperson. Of course she would have to take her body guard with her, wouldn’t she? That would be a good idea in reality due to the fact we could watch her BIG HEAD being chopped off like many of the poor souls before her that Mohammed gutted. 3-13-07 And on and on it goes. I have written about Illegal Aliens and how the government is either paying their tuition to college, wanting to allow them to vote or allowing them to apply and receive social security benefits. I figured it would be hard to beat any of these subjects, but I now have one to put the icing on the cake. It appears that Frederica Wilson, a Democratic State Senator from Florida , wants to ban the term “Illegal Alien” from all state documents. Wilson suggests that the term illegal alien is derogatory and insulting to the many people who are “Illegal Aliens”. Wilson has actually presented bill SB 2154 which says "A state agency or official may not use the term 'illegal alien' in an official document of the state." She also stated that the term alien refers to someone from outer space. She should know because she is out there somewhere. Let’s break this one down for Senator Wilson. We’ll go slow and start with the term “Illegal” taken from a legal dictionary…1) adj. in violation of statute, regulation or ordinance, which may be criminal or merely not in conformity. Thus, an armed robbery is illegal, and so is an access road which is narrower than the county allows, but the violation is not criminal. 2) A person residing in a country of which he/she is not a citizen and who has no official permission to be there. Next we’ll do “Alien” taken from the same dictionary….1) n. a person who is not a citizen of the country. 2) In the United States any person born in another country to parents who are not American and who has not become a naturalized citizen. There are resident aliens officially permitted to live in the country and illegal aliens who have sneaked into the country or stayed beyond the time allowed on a visa. Now the way I understand these definitions are that the people we refer to as illegal aliens are in fact “ILLEGAL ALIENS!” What part of these definitions does the good Senator not understand? I have read this over and over and cannot find the words ALF or Klingon in the definitions at all. Senator Wilson suggests that we use the term “Undocumented Immigrant”. I will agree with her on this one, but will interpret in my own way. If something is undocumented that would make it illegal. If someone is an immigrant, then they are an alien to the new land. That does sound familiar, doesn’t it? I guess this could open the doors for many of us. Let’s say you lost your driver’s license and live in Kentucky . You decide to drive anyway and go to Florida and get stopped by a legal resident (Sheriff) of that state. You could actually tell the judge that you were an undocumented immigrant in Florida due to the fact that you had no license (undocumented) nor are you a Florida citizen (alien to Florida ). The judge would have to set you free, have you register to vote in that state, send your kids to college and give you directions to the Social Security office. This might not be a bad idea after all. Gas the car up….I am off to Florida . 3-05-07 It appears that every time I surf the web anymore I run across more foolish things that the Liberals are trying to do. Basically, Nancy Pelosi and her comrades will not stop until they ruin the country. Okay, for those that want to bash Bush and the Iraq war now is the time because I know you will not see the point in what I am about to write, but will only see the war. Go now. Are you finished yet? Good, let me continue. It appears that in California there was a law passed that gave Illegal Aliens the same rate for college as In-State students. They are not the only state that is doing this either. New Mexico, New York and a few others also have passed a bill similar to the one in California. Now, let’s go a step further. Shall we? Our dear beloved Liberal Speaker of The House, Nancy Pelosi, now wants to introduce a bill to the United States Congress that will generously give free tuition to Illegal Aliens. Yes, read it again because I wrote “Illegal Aliens”. To me that is awfully generous of her to take the taxpayers money and hand it over to colleges throughout the United States to ensure that these illegal aliens get their well deserved education. Notice the key word “illegal”. I don’t know about many of my readers out there, but I am having a hard enough time trying to put my daughter through college without having to help foot the bill for this program. I would kind of like to see Nancy Pelosi introduce a bill that would help American children get free tuition first before she worries about all the illegal aliens. That one would never pass because the Democratic controlled House and Senate would snub their noses at it. In order for that to happen, they would have to raise taxes. Wait! What was I thinking? Nancy Pelosi made the statement that in order for this bill being introduced to work there may be a slight decrease in tax breaks. Wonder who that will affect? Okay, everyone stop reading and go look in the mirror. Back? Okay, that face you just saw is the one that will be affected by it. Yes, you and I. I feel that the United States Government has catered enough to illegal aliens and it is time to stop and help those Americans that are begging for help in tuition cost among other things. Every time we spend money on illegal aliens, we are taking from those that it was intended for. And that is an American citizen. In closing, let me throw this scenario at you. Let’s say that Nancy Pelosi gets this bill passed. Now enter illegal aliens that hate the United States and will do anything to destroy it. Remember that this program covers all illegal aliens (can’t discriminate, can we?) and not just those from Mexico. The United States educates them in the best fields there are and they in turn use it to help make bombs, fly airplanes (no way that could happen?) and start terrorist cells within the country. They have now legally infiltrated our country and are now working inside looking out. I’ll let you, my readers, work your minds as to what could possibly happen next. 2-26-07 As I sat watching the news yesterday, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I had to turn completely around and watch what was being said on the TV. It seems that an activist group is spearheading a campaign to make it possible for Legal Aliens and Permanent Resident to vote in elections. Now I may be wrong here, but don’t you have to be a citizen of the United States to vote? The Voters Right Act, which was passed in 1965, made it easier to vote, especially to those that had problems reading and writing. Go to the polls here in Eastern Kentucky and see how many people this Act affects. It’s just that around here, most people that needed help Election Day seem to have recovered and can read very well the day after. At least until the next election. Anyway, coming back to what I started, this Act was due to many not being able to vote due to this handicap. Basically, it was aimed at minorities in the United States . What happened next was that the National Voters Registration Act in 1995 was made to make it a little easier for citizens to register. Also, to follow citizens as they moved from state to state and applied for a different Driver’s License. This act also binds the hands of people that are registering people to vote. One thing they could not do was ask if they were citizens of the U.S. With that being said, the United States already has many people voting that are not citizens and are not entitled to do so. But….they do so every election. Now Cheryl Wertz wants to add to the already growing problem by making it legal for these non citizens to have the right to vote. If this becomes a reality, many nations that are against the United States could actually have a loud voice as to who is elected in each state as well as the White House. This could be done very simply over the course of years. Keep feeding their people into the United States and apply as a legal alien or permanent resident until they have a stronghold. Is this something of a dream? I don’t think so. It may not be something that could happen in a few short years, but over a long time, it is very possible. I think it is time that the people of the United States wake up and smell the coffee as to who is doing what. It appears that we are more concerned as what the opposite Political Party is doing instead of what is best for the American People. Does it matter if you are a Democrat or a Republican when it comes to this issue? Ask a Liberal and see what answer you get. I did this morning and the first words spoken were “The Republicans are for anything that will destroy the country”. Well my friend, I hope you are reading this because you need to look on your side of the aisle if you want to find these activists. 2-19-07 have been pondering over a subject that has been talked about for a few years and that is the Fair Tax, also known as the Flat Tax. What this means is that there will be a tax placed on everything you buy. The only exemption would be food, which is not taxed anyway. Some will argue this is not fair just as those that would argue the opposite. I have been reading an article on this subject and I totally agree with it. Within this article it talked of $ 345 billion dollars are still owed from Tax year 2001. This is 2007 so I kind of wonder what the amounts totaling the other years in between would be. This money is due from individuals as much as from small business owners along with Corporations. So how does the IRS expect to collect it? This report went on to say that much more was probably due, but most people do not claim all their earnings such as cash money or take deductions that are not actually theirs. If everyone was fair and truthful when completing their returns maybe the tax burden on the rest of us could be reduced. Not only being honest, but actually paying what they owe just as the rest of us do. There are actually law firms that have been advertising on every media possible to help people eliminate or reduce the money they owe to the IRS. The worse thing here is that the IRS is condoning this by offering an amnesty to those that owe $ 10,000.00 or more n back taxes. Who does this program help? Not you and I. According to the IRS, this program was set up in order to collect a small portion of what is owed to them, but in reality it helps those that have made a small fortune in any certain year and those individuals that have bilked the system of monies owed. In reality, we are the system so we are the ones being bilked. A flat tax would remedy this situation. If this flat tax is passed then the payroll tax that we see every payday would be deleted forever. In turn, as I previously stated, we would pay taxes on item bought. In essence, the more you buy the more taxes you would pay. If you are a high paid executive and live the lavish lifestyle, then you would pay the price just as someone making minimal wage would pay their share. It should be noted that under this tax and I quote the article “It protects low-income individuals by rebating taxes paid up to the poverty level”. There are many people who really need the Earned Income Credit, but many that abuse it. I sympathize with those that rely upon it. And that is why the low income rebating tax issue was added into this tax. There are people that are on a fixed income and have to file taxes and sometimes end up paying. These are people that draw certain types of disability checks from their former employers and have to claim it as income of their tax returns. If their spouse works, then the entire family income is counted and not just the spouse’s income. Income tax on this, Social Security and other items would be totally eliminated. The IRS could be downsized tremendously and maybe even turned over to a private entity. And as the article said “April 15th would be just another day”. Oh Happy Day! 2-12-07 I can not nor will not ever agree with Illegal Aliens receiving Social Security benefits from the United States Government. I guess the key word for me here is “ILLEGAL”. Senator McCain, Arizona Republican, who I have always respected, made a statement supporting this by saying that many presently lawful immigrants should also receive benefits when they were working as illegal aliens. In other words, if they had worked illegally here under false or stolen documents, we should forgive them for this act and reward them for their contribution to society. Senator McCain is dead wrong on this one. It is not just McCain either who supported this action. Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, Mass. Democrats, also voted yea on this measure. Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont Democrat, said it would be unfair to deny illegal immigrants the benefits. For years, many people have worked like borrowed mules in order to receive what little benefits they can get when it comes time for them to retire. Some have to actually file lawsuits against the United States Government in order to receive some of these benefits when they get to the point that they can no longer work and apply for Social Security Disability Benefits. This happens too often to those that have paid their dues over the years, but it appears to our elected officials that it is fair to allow illegal immigrants to apply and receive them with no problem due to what is actually an amnesty program. It is things like this that has most American’s in an uproar with the government. It appears that we elect officials to do what is right for the United States , but they appear to cater to those that are more like they are. And that is illegal. I would recommend that any of my readers out there that are in the process of applying for Social Security benefits to learn a little Spanish and answer all the Judge’s questions in that manner. Maybe that will give you just a little edge in him/her ruling in your favor. If not, go see McCain or Kerry! 2-05-07 First, let me explain to all my readers out there that I am writing this column the Friday before the 2007 Super Bowl is to be played. Each and every year we gather at my house to watch the Super Bowl. Usually it is my sons and I. This year will be a little different as my son and I will be going to my brother’s house to watch the game along with him and my Uncle. Of course, we are all Chicago Bears fans as we should be. I, along with my brother, was born and raised in the heart of Chicago (yes Yippie, I have been out of Breathitt County ). So it is no surprise that everyone in my family will root for the Bears to win. The only thing different this year is that the media has already played the race card before the first kick-off. Yes, the race card. It seems the media is talking much more about the two Coaches being black than they are talking about the players and the game itself. Here are a couple examples of what I mean. Black Super Bowl coaches make history Black Super Bowl coaches will knock down another wall Now, I wonder exactly why the media is playing the race card when the people of the United States have been screaming for many years to not separate anyone by race no matter the situation. Treat everyone the same and equal rights for all, is the spoken word. I would bet you that Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy have not been running around the field all week yelling “Black Power”. So why is the media hyping the game up as black against black? Can’t they just look at it as another Super Bowl with 2 great Coaches and two great teams? Some of you out there may look at me and wonder if I am prejudiced. The answer to that question is simply no. My idol growing up and even today is Billy Williams, who played left field for the Chicago Cubs. Any of you that know me personally, will also know that I wear Number 26 on every uniform I have ever worn. That is also the number that Billy Williams wore. My children all knew why I wore that number and one day a few years back while watching a Cubs game, Billy Williams was coaching first base and I told my daughter who he was and that he is the reason I wear number 26. She looked at me and said “Dad, he is black.” I explained to her that color has no meaning when it comes to people and we should not judge them because of the color of their skin. I believe that and have instilled that into my children also. The media would do good to follow my lead when it comes to the Super Bowl instead of reporting to every child in the nation that will be watching that there is a difference due to the different colors of people’s skin. They are coaches and nothing more. 1-31-07 Attending the Breathitt Fiscal Court meeting yesterday, I sensed something I haven’t seen in a very, very long time. It appeared that the three Commissioners and the Judge Executive were actually in agreement on just about everything. Could this be a new day for Breathitt County ? Time will tell, but I was impressed and no Fiscal Court has ever been able to do that. I mean no Fiscal Court in any county in the area and I have attended many of them. Judge Richardson handled himself in a very professional manner while conducting the meeting and the three Commissioners showed their interest not only in the future of the county, but also in what has happened in the past. Piece by piece they tore into the bills that were to be paid and questioned many of them. Each Commissioner spoke up on these bills and asked for an answer many times from the County Treasurer . Through the entire meeting no one was eager to jump into anything presented to them and that showed me that they were all very cautious and wanted what was best for the county. Will this continue? We’ll see in the next few months and years. I hope it does continue and will stand by them until they prove me different. 1-17-07 Hugo Chavez was re-elected as President of Venezuela in December. That made some people here in the United States happy. Harry Belafonte and Cindy Sheehan are, of course, his biggest supporters. They may have been his biggest supporters by visiting him in Venezuela last year just before the elections. When he gave his acceptance speech, he let all his supporters know that his victory was a direct blow to President Bush. Not only was it a blow to President Bush, but a blow to all of us here in the United States . Chavez is a dictator, but many have argued in the past that Venezuela is a Democratic society with elections held with term limits. What many have not heard is that Chavez is now going to have term limits done away with. That means that he will win the Presidential election year after year (by force) until the day he dies or is overthrown. He also has plans to make a one party system, which he will be the leader of. This falls into what many consider will turn into a communist state just like that of Cuba . Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro are two people that are very much alike. They both control the military and branches of the government. They call all the shots and those that oppose them are not heard from very long. Iran is another country that Chavez is very close to. In reality, all the enemies of the United States are aligned with Hugo Chavez and his party. Many Americans have retaliated against Hugo Chavez by boycotting the gas stations that sell gas owned by Hugo Chavez, which is Citgo. Many stations that carry the Citgo name either went out of business or have had to change, or in the process of changing, their name. This was due to the remarks Chavez made about President Bush while in New York last year. In conclusion, I am very curious as to what the future holds for the United States where Venezuela is concerned. We have had to put up with Fidel Castro for many years. Now, do we have to put up with two of them? 1-07-07 Okay folks, this just in. I have looked hard to find these New Year’s Resolutions made by the following for the year 2007. CNN: They resolve to distinguish the difference between Obama and Osama. Their first act to follow this resolution is to use two different keyboards. One with the “B” omitted and the other with the “S” omitted. Or maybe one with the entire “BS” omitted. Wolf Blitzer: He resolves to have Barak Obama make an appearance on one of his shows and introduce him using his full name which is Barak Hussein Obama Jr. Or they might just introduce him as Junior. Hillary Clinton: She resolves to finally accept the fact that her time for running as Vice President has come. That is providing she can correctly announce her running mates name. “Barak Obama” not “Ole Black Bama, Lam-A-Jam.” John Kerry: He resolves to make no resolution before he made this resolution to not make a resolution. Al Gore: He resolves to minimize the effects of global warming by sewing his mouth shut with environmentally sound thread. Michael Moore: He resolves to collaborate with Baghdad Bob to prove that Sadaam's execution was actually faked in the back of a U-Haul van in Hollywood , California Cindy Sheehan: She resolves to take a bath and apply for a job for the first time in 4 years. Nancy Pelosi: She resolves to have herself encased in a life-sized, limited-edition, Disney-themed snow globe entitled "Pelosio's Grape Kool-Aid Adventure," which will be placed in the House chambers. Ray Nagin (God Bless Ray Nagin): He resolves to initiate a new arena football franchise in his city and call them the New Orleans Cocoa Puffs. Rosie O'Donnell: She resolves to attend the Fran Drescher Voice Lesson Institute so she can sing the National Anthem at the first exhibition game for the New Orleans Cocoa Puffs. Pez: I resolve to continue doing what I have been doing these past few years. Stay tuned folks. 1-01-07 I am not a scholar on presidents or those that served in the position, but I do know a few things of President Gerald Ford, who passed away this week. I would like to share some of them with you in this week’s commentary. As everyone knows, President Ford was named to the seat of Vice President when Spiro Agnew resigned in 1973 and later became President when Richard Nixon resigned. Many people believe this to be a setup for the pardoning of President Nixon, which was done one month after he became President of The United States. This action alone guaranteed that he would not be elected to the office he was now holding. I was stationed in Germany at the time (which I will hit on later) and many of the older troops looked at this as a good thing because many had served in Vietnam and gave Nixon credit for ending the conflict. The one thing they did not support was the amnesty that Ford set up for the draft dodgers and deserters. This was part of his demise. One of the least known things about President Ford was that he sat on the Warren Commission which investigated the assassination of President Kennedy. This was later used against him when he ran for the office of President in 1976 against Jimmy Carter. Used against him because many people, especially Democrats, felt that the Warren Commission was covering up a conspiracy which is still believed today. In 1975 President Ford put forth a proposal to pull out all the U.S. troops from Europe . Being in Germany at the time and knowing that I had 18 months left to serve there, I thought Ford was the greatest thing since sliced bread. This talk was killed by the house very quickly and Ford once again became known to us as the man who pardoned Nixon. During the elections in 1976, many of Ford’s own party were actually against him. This all falling back to the Nixon pardon. President Carter beat Ford soundly, which was what everyone expected. Many stated that the Democrats could have run anyone and won in 1976, but chose someone from the south in order to garner the southern vote. President Ford will be known as the President who pardoned Nixon and the tripping President. He was known to trip occasionally and comedians everywhere portrayed him as a klutz. Chevy Chase , from Saturday Night Live, put President Ford down forever in history as the president who could not walk and chew gum. No matter how you look at President Ford, he will always be known as the man who pardoned Nixon. It doesn’t matter what else he did or did not do. 12-15-06 This Week I would like to address the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations that have tried their very best to take away all our Christmas beliefs and traditions. This is not something new, but has been going on for years and the general public has just caught sight of it in the last few years. Somewhere in the United States of America at this very moment, some lawyer(s) is sitting at a table or desk writing up an argument as to why Christmas decorations, Carolers, items with the Baby Jesus or the words Merry Christmas should not be shown or stated in the public forum. Even many stores have had their employees refrain from using the expression “Merry Christmas” this or years gone by. Some of these huge corporations stated that they did not want to offend the customers who did not celebrate Christmas as the reason this was put into place. We, as John Q. Public, know it is due to what and how the ACLU would attack them. Have we come to a nation that fears the ACLU? Or are we heading away from what out beliefs are just to please other religions that do not see things as we do on the 25th Of December? As many say “Jesus is the reason for the season”. Now I am not knocking any other religion and have no problem with anyone celebrating in their own way just as we do. Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Eid al-Adha can all be celebrated just as we do Christmas. We do it in our way and they can do it in their way. Just leave us alone ACLU! The ACLU has filed lawsuits year after year trying to protect free speech all the while wanting to quiet anyone who would dare to say Merry Christmas in a school or government office. While growing up, it was a tradition and something that we looked forward to each and every year. The plays, the dinners, the exchanging of presents all are something that will forever be in my memories. Does the ACLU want to take them away also? The way the ACLU would like to see it, is that each and every Mayor, County Judge and Governor turn into Scrooge the day after Thanksgiving. The communities here in Eastern Kentucky had or will have Christmas parades and there had better not be anyone from the ACLU standing on Main Street, Kentucky trying to stop it. And, if they do have the nerve to stand out there, you just might see the New Years fireworks start up early. I seen a bumper sticker on one of my many ventures and it summed it up as to how I feel about the ACLU and all their lawsuits. It read “HEY ACLU, MERRY CHRISTMAS!” And with that being said, a Merry Christmas to all of you! 12-14-06 The voters of Michigan went to the polls this year and voted on Proposition 2, which passed, and it takes effect on Dec. 22, 2006. The ballot for the constitutional amendment says it would: Ban public institutions from using affirmative action programs that give preferential treatment to groups of individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin for public employment, education, or contracting purposes. Public institutions affected by the proposal include state government, local government, public colleges and universities, community colleges and school districts. Prohibit public institutions from discriminating against groups or individuals due to their gender, ethnicity, race, color or national origin (a separate provision of the state constitution already prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin) This vote by Michigan voters is called "popular constitutionalism" or simply that constitutional law of the state should be defined outside of the courts by the people Federal constitutional guarantees of equality (14th amendment) prohibit government sponsored discrimination based on race. Opponents of Proposition 2 (those who are mad that it passed) should ask, where were all the minority voters? Who stopped them from voting? About 14% of minority voters supported Prop 2, so it passed on the white vote. Where were the minorities on voting day? Affirmative action as it stands today is and will continue to be state sponsored racism and sexism Many ask exactly what affirmative action is. It was put into law to make a more even playing field for everyone. Or so they thought. It was mostly aimed at the minorities and gender. It actually gives them preference over all others that do not fit into this group. This is where I feel affirmative action is not fair to all Americans. What affirmative action actually does most of the time is use reverse discrimination. That is when the most qualified person does not get the job due to them not fitting the bill of what affirmative actions calls for. I feel that it has done an injustice to many companies, organizations and even the government. Many government offices have to have so many from each race, sex and age working for them due to it. People who support affirmative action don’t look at it logically either. They are stuck in a time warp where discrimination was practiced openly and feel the need to rectify it. I do not agree that every organization needs to be diversified either. If the people are qualified and it creates diversity, then so be it. I am of the belief that we are all equal and do not need laws to make us as such. If you are the most qualified person, then you should get the job, contract or whatever. This also goes along with being “Politically Correct.” But, that is another subject that I will hit on in the future. 12-06-06 President Bush stated a long time ago that the war in Iraq did not go as planned. No one expected the insurgency, but here lately we are seeing why it is happening. Saddam. What everyone forgets is that all Congressmen and Senators done was vote for the war with the exception of one on the intelligence that was given. The Democrats have not provided one plan to get out of Iraq as of yet. They only say that we need a date to withdraw. This had nothing to do with the Democrats getting both houses either. The people will pay the price in the near future for their mistake. The Democrats had a vote on the floor to withdraw and all but 7 voted against it. The talk of the borders is not something that just started in the last 4 to 6 years. This has been going on for decades, but due to the hatred of President Bush, it has escalated. Look back at the voting records of the houses in the last 6 years on this subject. You have no idea what gridlock can be until January 1st. If the Democrats do not want what is best for the USA then we will see what gridlock is about. Raise taxes on the middle class, cut corporate tax breaks and implement new give a way programs is what the Democrats are after. One question, are you personally worse off today than you were before January 2001? I was never a fan of Rumsfeld, even before he took the Secretary position, but he made decisions on information that was provided to him just as every other one has done in the past. People always mention Halliburton, but have you ever looked to see who also owns stock in this company? One of your heroes has thousands of shares. Look up the relationship between Halliburton and certain Liberals who have protested Halliburton only when they were writing a book or releasing a movie. It doesn’t matter who the Democrats or Republicans put in the front lines come 2008 due to the fact that Nancy Pelosi will set the path for this. Remember, they control everything now and what they do in the next two years will be very critical on their party. Democrats use to preach that Hillary would win, but I see that they have backed off of that one now. Smart choice because she nor Baraka can grab that ring. We have not been attacked since 2001 and a person once made a statement that Bush was president when it did happen. What they failed to mention was that the man was in office 9 months. We had been hit repeatedly during the last administration and this was just a continuation of it. What you should be thankful for is that President Bush has not let get hit again while he has been in office. 11-18-06 The 2006 election is here and gone. The Democrats took control of not only Congress, but also the Senate in this mid term. So now, what does the future hold? President Bush and future Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi have already met and talked a little about the future of our country. I would have loved to been there and listened in on that conversation. I am under the belief that both parties are now going to have to work hand in hand with each if the country is to go forward. I understand that there are differences in the war in Iraq and that in reality both parties fully understand that we cannot just up and leave. In just two days after capturing the house, the Democrats have seen the stock market slide downward slightly and the price of gas rise sharply. What is in store for the next few months? Only time will tell. In Eastern Kentucky , the election went smoothly as all can see. The winners and losers are both glad that it is finally over. I know that I am. As always, there are complaints about this or that, but there are legitimate complaints this time. There were problems with the voting machines early in some areas, while others had problems all day long. At the courthouses there appeared to be problems with adding the two machines. This was actually announced on the radio. I automatically had an answer to that. It’s called a calculator! Were the machines actually messed up or were the workers either not trained enough or trained just perfect? I do look for certain campaigns to have a recount and justly so. I have always said that if an outcome is less than 50 votes, then a recount is in order. Some people do not see it that way and call the person requesting a recount a sore loser. This is not the case as all votes should be counted and sometimes a recount makes that happen. That was proven in 2000 in Florida . The only thing I can say is congratulations to the winners and to those that lost, you gave it your best and that is all that can be asked of anyone. After the election, I was talking to a couple of friends and one in particular made a very funny, but maybe a true statement. And that is when Tommy Noble told me that when the end of the world came, he would be very happy that he was in Breathitt County . That is because Breathitt County is 10 years behind everyone else and we would have a full 10 years before the end hit us. 11-02-06 It seems like 2004, doesn’t it? What I mean is that we are one week away from this mid term election and who should rear his ugly head and once again speak for the Democratic Party in the way he did in 2004? I am sure anyone of you that have been watching the news or reading the web knows that I am talking about the King of Liberals himself, Senator John Kerry. What Senator Kerry has done this time is not only get many soldiers upset, but also their families, Veterans and Veteran Organizations. He has also accomplished something really out of the ordinary in getting many within his own party upset at him. Senator Kerry decided it was his duty to go out and campaign for many of his fellow Liberals and while he was at Pasadena City College in Southern California he made the following remark “You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq .” Not only politicians, but many organizations have demanded Senator Kerry apologize, but he says that he has nothing to apologize about. President Bush said “Our troops did not enlist because they did not study hard in school or do their homework." "The men and women who serve in our all-volunteer Armed Forces are plenty smart and are serving because they are patriots – and Senator Kerry owes them an apology." It was reported on CNN and ABC yesterday evening that a Democratic congressman told ABC News Tuesday, “I guess Kerry wasn't content blowing 2004, now he wants to blow 2006, too.” It makes the Conservative side breath rest a little bit easier knowing that Senator Kerry is always somewhere in the shadows waiting to trip his own party. I have always said that John Kerry, Howard Dean and Ray Nagin (GBRN) are and always will be an asset to the Republican Party. This is just one example where I prove my point. Waiting for the group hug! 10-26-06 I wrote an article on January 23rd, 2003 concerning the now leaving Fiscal Court. I stated at that time that we should give them every benefit of a doubt. I, along with many others, have given them that benefit and they have let me and others down completely. Here is the same letter that I wrote back then. Only this time it is directed at an entire group due to the Fiscal Court being 100% replaced. Once again we cross the path where we get the opportunity to look over our shoulder while walking forward. When is that, you may ask? It comes around every January following an election year. It's easy to look back and say this should have been done or that should have been done once it is over. Is it possible that no matter what is or is not accomplished that we will always be looking back? We should learn from history, but we always turn our heads and have a deaf ear when election year rolls around. Trust me, I am not trying to compare the current Fiscal Court with any in the past but the rumbling has already started within the first month of the current administration. In reality, it would not matter what the past administration does or does not do. It is the current one that we have to look at for the progress that has been promised. Speaking of promises, many were made and will continue in future elections that cannot become reality, but the people want it to become reality so bad that it becomes within their grasp only to be jerked away once they leave the voting booth. We tend to hear these promises throughout the years concerning water, roads, industry and growth. What we fail to realize is that it takes the people to elect a Fiscal Court that will act as one cohesive unit and not have individual goals. I believe the current Fiscal Court, as with any other, needs to be given the benefit of the doubt to deliver on these promises. It would be hard for anyone whether in government or the private sector to produce results if the funding is not there. The new Fiscal Year, which begins in July, should start showing some of that progress if any is to be had. Finally, remember this one thing, we as voters elected everyone in office (yes, even if you voted for someone else) and they have an obligation to us to keep us informed with their progress along with the pitfalls. You, as a voter, have every right to attend each and every Fiscal Court meeting and present your ideas as well as your displeasures. You are the one in charge, for it is you who will re-elect them or put them out to pasture in the next election. 10-16-06 I am a little bit upset this week and I would like everyone to know exactly why. It appears that the Breathitt County Fiscal Court has every intention on leaving the bare minimum for the “All New Improved Fiscal Court” that will be replacing them come January 2007. In this year alone, we have seen blacktop and bridges going everywhere. And the kicker is that they are going to none other than people employed by the Breathitt Fiscal Court, Breathitt County School Board family members or family members of the Fiscal Court itself. This is wrong and I am asking that there be a total in depth investigation by the State and Federal Government. The people of Breathitt County have been raped for too long and it is now time that someone to take a stand and request that someone who cannot be bought off come in and do an honest investigation. If no one in the State and Federal Government will do it, then maybe we can get an invitation to 60 minutes, 20/20 or better yet The O’Reilly Factor. This really pisses me off due to the fact that this is our tax money. I will not sit by anymore and pay taxes in order to pay for someone a new black topped road or a nice new concrete bridge. I am asking anyone that wants to join me in this venture to e-mail me at pez41339@yahoo.com. I will get a petition or whatever it takes to get these illegal acts taken to justice and the culprits before a judge. We have children who have to walk in mud to catch a school bus due to the Fiscal Court turning a blind eye. We are talking about children here. We have people that have to drive through running water due to an unsafe bridge or no bridge at all. We have people that have no other way to their houses other than walk across a swinging bridge. The people of Copeland have been begging for a bridge for 10 or more years. Yet we can build new ones for one or two families. Look at each and every bridge that the Fiscal Court has built this year and you will see that somewhere on the other side is a friend, employee or family member of the Fiscal Court. The Fiscal Court is not doing what they were elected to do. What they are doing is making sure all their friends and family members are taken care of. That is soon to come to an end. As I said earlier, I intend to take it to the Federal level. I not only voted for, but campaigned for the new Fiscal Court that will take office in January. The one thing I ask is that they do an in depth investigation of their own and prosecute the current Fiscal Court for any and all wrong doings. Last thing for you doubters out there. Do I know these statements I made to be a fact? I took pictures of them doing it on more than one occasion! 10-01-06 It really irks me that the United States has people in it that actually support Hugo Chavez and Iranian President Ahmadinejad. Harry Belafonte introduced Chavez to a church congregation in Harlem today and stated that he was a good friend. When asked if he knew what Chavez had said about President Bush being the devil yesterday, he said no. I truly believe it is a shame that any American would let these people come to our neighborhoods and say the things that they do. This is not a Republican or a Democratic thing. This is an American thing. I do take my hat off to Charlie Rangel, who is a Democratic Congressman from New York. He stated that no one in the United States should allow any president from another country to come here and talk about our Commander In Chief, no matter what party holds the White House at the time. I am under the belief that both parties had better get their heads out of their rears before it is too late. We have been split by a bunch that is at the point of worrying too much about getting elected year after year than the main purpose they were elected for. And that is to take care of the people of the United States and protect it from danger. This has not been happening as of late because both parties seem to harp on what the other is doing and waiting for a chance to point the finger. I do support the President and I will support the one after him and so on. I also support the notion that something had better be done fast or it will be too late for all of us. We are at a point that we are welcoming in the very people that want us dead. Besides the politicians, the media is not helping matters either. Chavez and Ahmadinejad were both at the U.N. and called President Bush every name they could get away with and the vast majority of the crown either laughed or cheered. This being said right in our own country. The media played on it over and over yesterday. If you missed this, it was because your television or radio was not on. What is it going to take to get people to understand that the United States is in imminent danger? I think it has gotten to a point beyond partisan politics after these stunts. I think we had better get ready for the next round because we are not too far away from it. Everyone keep bickering and eventually the boom will be lowered on us in a way we could never imagine. 9-28-06 I have been watching the news closely this month due to the big gig that went down at the United Nations just after the NAM met earlier this month. I was actually talking to a friend the other day and he had heard about the United Nations meeting, but had no idea what NAM was. This came from a person that considers himself up on local, state, national and world politics. I proceeded to inform him of the meeting held in Cuba on the 12th of September. These countries consist mostly of those that want us dead. Countries such as Iran, Syria, N. Korea, Venezuela and others like them. No doubt there was much talking going on concerning the United States. Could have been enough that a script was written for the following week in which they would be at the United Nations. This came as a surprise to my friend and he doubted me at first, until I actually showed him the headlines of it. This story was covered by every anti American media outlet in the world. Al Jazeera was the main media covering this event. That in itself tells the story, doesn’t it? Now, we come to the United Nations where certain world leaders got time to stand up and be heard. Iranian President Ahmadinejad took the time to talk basically about nothing that we haven’t heard before. Nukes, Israel and the Holocaust (which he says never happened) were his main themes. Now enter Hugo Chavez. This guy is a total idiot. He called President Bush a devil, an alcoholic and a John Wayne wannabe. These words were spoken at the UN and also at a church in Harlem where he was welcomed with open arms by Harry Bellefonte. This brings me to the main part of my commentary. I say Hugo Chavez goes on a world wide tour with all his rhetoric. It will be billed as a George Soros production and can only be heard on Air America Radio and viewed on The Clinton News Network (CNN). But, he will need some lead-ins as some people will not pay good money just to see him. To begin with, the emcee will no doubt have to be Harry Bellefonte who can introduce the rest or the troupe that is part of this great show. He could open the show himself by riding on a banana boat from the left part of the stage singing “Hu, Hu Go, “Hugo come and he take you away” No show is complete without some fine acting. So Harry will introduce Sean Penn to perform Act I, Scene II of “All the Liberals Men”. Next on the agenda will be a comedy routine performed by Rosie O’Donnell and Jeanine Garrofolo. Their act will be to just walk across the stage holding hands and disappearing into the private dressing room of Barbara Streisand. No show is complete without a musical guest. Harry once again rows out on stage (Hu-Go) and tells everyone that they have a special surprise for everyone. The Dixie Chicks have come to perform. They first perform a tribute to Rosie O’Donnell with “Love me Like a Man” followed by “Voice Inside My Head” for Garrofolo and ending with “Goodbye George” for the listening pleasure of Hugo. Finally, Harry comes out and introduces the man all the Liberals came to see. Mr. Hugo Chavez himself. Following a three hour speech and comedy routine, Hugo continues ranting on President Bush. As he is about to finish, you can hear Harry on the intercom. He says he has a wonderful surprise for Hugo. Close your eyes. Okay, open them! To Hugo’s surprise and amazement he sees his biggest supporter. It’s Cindy Sheehan! Hugo hugs and kisses Cindy. Cindy then proceeds to do what she does best and that is to take her chap stick out and apply it before kissing Hugo’s rear end. Viewers of CNN see this and the stock market soars on Chap Stick. That’s it folks. This has been the world tour of Hugo Chavez and company. If you want to see the replay, please tune in to the Clinton News Network (CNN) where we will once again be covering the United Nations all this week. 9-21-06 This week’s commentary is not mine at all, but one that belongs to a 15 year old student. His name is Mr. Tyler Barnes and I requested that I use his Essay this week. I think many of you might want to look at the source while reading it. Remember, this is by a very intelligent 15 year old young man. Do we, as adults, look at the world the same as the younger generation does? Very good job Mr. Barnes, I give you an A+ on this. Read and enjoy. Terrorism Can Be Prevented by: T. B. You may ask "Can terrorism in the United States be prevented?" The answer is yes. It can be stopped, or at least it can be contained. If you want your proof, watch the news. There hasn't been a terrorist attack on American soil since that tragic day in September of 2001. There are may other ways it can be stopped. For example, we should take the intensity of the war on terrorism up to literally bombing all those countries that have known terrorist roots. This may seem radical, but it is necessary to save American lives. I think this because talking apparently doesn't work. The pansified United Nations thinks we can all get along if we talk and that all problems can be solved by writing angry letters to terrorists and telling them that what they did was wrong. If they apologize, we can all get together, drink Kool-aid, and think happy thoughts until the end of the world. Now, let me put reality and logic into this sissy way of solving terrorism by asking you a question. Do you think that Osama bin Laden will send a video tape apologizing to us along with his wishes to ally with us? Keep on dreaming--he wants us dead. You just don't change your mind about wanting to kill people whom you loathe. If you want actual proof that talking doesn't work, look at Sadaam Hussein. When he surrendered to the United Nations in the Gulf War, he had to follow a few rules. Naturally, he had to pull out of Kuwait , but he also had to destroy his chemical and biological weapons. He did not follow the second condition I stated and the United Nations asked him to dispose of them 13 times and he did not. It sounds like he was saving them for something. That is why talking won't work. The terrorists are like bullies. If you don't do something to them, they will continue this pugnacious behavior. Congress, thankfully, put down their Kool-aid, put aside their hippie-like thoughts, and declared war on those savages--not President Bush. The President cannot declare war. He can only propose it. Congress is the only body in the United States government that can declare war. They told President Bush he could do anything he wanted with the war. Imagine if you had a person who was bullying you. If you just act like nothing ever happened, that person will continue bullying you. Well, let's say you fight the bully and win, like we are doing. The bully will leave you alone. It may not be the solution that Rosie O Donnell would choose, but it works very effectively. Another reason why I think that we should bomb them into submission is because we are losing lives. That is war--that's what happens. Think about it. They have little anti-air defenses (or at least compared to the size of our United States Air Force) so they can't counter-attack our bombings. I say pull our people out of the country and tell everyone that if they want to live that they have two weeks (or a reasonable amount of time) to leave. After the time is up, carpet bomb the place. But, just to appease the hippies and do-gooders who think animals should vote, rebuild the country so that in the future, they can kill more of us. Thank you, do-gooders and human shields. I have one final task to ask of you, if you are still reading this because you are not afraid of logic. Look on the internet and watch the clip of the two towers being hit with airplanes. Watch it over and over again until you start thinking along these lines: "Who would do such a terrible thing?" Think about the people jumping out of the windows of those buildings to their deaths. Think about the girlfriend who received a cell phone call from her boyfriend who said to her that he loved her and that he was going to die. Think about the children who lost relatives and parents to these vile people. They (meaning the terrorists) look at this as an accomplishment. These are the people (if you can call them people) who we are fighting against. Those are the people who fired the first shot, way back in 1993 during the first World Trade Center bombing under President Clinton's watch and later at the USS Cole. God bless America . God bless President Bush. And God bless Congress for allowing us to be rid of these psychos. 9-12-06 A few weeks ago, my daughter and niece had a very interesting conversation. The conversation consisted of whether the people of the United States should understand the religion of other countries and the Gods they believe in. My niece held the argument and belief that as a people, we should understand every countries religion due to the fact that we may one day be at war with a country of a certain religion or in occupation of one. She stated that it would be to our advantage to know this because we could better understand the people’s beliefs and it would make it easier for us to deal with the civilians. Basically, we would try to live by their religious beliefs while in their country. My niece continued on to say that she believed this should be taught in High School and be a requirement for graduation. This would have everyone prepared for the future if they were to perchance be in another country as a visitor or as part of the military. The stance my daughter took on the subject was pretty simple and quick to the point. Her argument was basically, who cares? She stated that with hundreds of religious beliefs, it was next to impossible to learn them all. Continuing, she said she was under the belief that the majority of Americans were not going to change their views on this subject as there are many out there that will not see or believe anything else no matter how much you tried to explain the importance or non importance of it. It was definitely a good conversation and I wish I would have had a recorder to tape it all in order to go in more depth with it. It was very interesting to hear a College Graduate and a College Student debating their ideas. One could only surmise what the entire conversation consisted of. With that said, I would like to add my own comments on this subject. First, my niece had a very good idea, but not rational. There is no possible way that any type of religion could be taught in schools. The Government and ACLU will not allow it. Maybe the ACLU would allow the Koran, but not religion as a whole. Secondly, if we were allowed to teach religion in school, the religious beliefs of others would take back seat to the religious beliefs of the area you were in. A good example is right here in Eastern Kentucky . The majority belief here is one God and the one Jesus, the one hanging on the Cross for our sins. Lastly, America as a whole will never allow the study of religions of other countries in our school systems. There would be an outright riot if that were being forced on the citizens of the United States . My personal belief is one God. Yours may be different and I will respect that. If you believe in Allah, Buddha, Zeus or any other entity, that is your choice. The only thing I ask is that you do not try to force it on me. You know what the good thing about all of this is? You do have a choice in America . You have a choice due to certain people that have laid their lives on the line. Remember that the next time you see a Soldier, Marine, Airman, Seaman or Veteran. 9-7-06 On Sunday August 27th, Flight 5191 out of Bluegrass Airport in Lexington crashed and killed 49 people. It was devastating for many in the state to hear of such an event happening right here in Kentucky. Only one day later a private plane crashed and killed all 7 aboard in Breathitt County. I am not doing a commentary on these wrecks because I am sure that many in the region will be doing a fine job at that. What I am going to do this commentary on is the fact that after every accident, evil lurks its head around the corner. This evil is not what you would normally expect when the word is spoken. This is the two legged kind that is wearing a three piece suit and carrying a briefcase. At one point in time this type of evil was not even considered evil, but was hailed as a very respected professional. No doubt some of you have already figured out who I am talking about. But, for those of you that have not, I am talking about Lawyers and Law Firms. Not all Lawyers fit into this category, but many do. The best example I can give you is the ones that had advertisements in the Lexington Herald on Wednesday August 30th. Just 3 days after 49 people lost their lives in Lexington these ads were placed. Not one, but two ads were placed in the Lexington Heralds soliciting clients from the families of the victims in this tragedy. Now you explain to me what is wrong with this picture? I seriously doubt the bodies had been released to the family members when these ads were run in the Lexington Herald. The first ad sent prayers to the families and then went on to explain how they had access to the best airplane experts in the world. The second ad stated that they would get the greatest amount of damages allowed by law. Of course they both work on a basis that if their client does not win, they owe nothing to the attorneys. Now I am not a brain surgeon, but I would bet the farm that none of the families have a remote possibility of losing their case involving this. I can go out on skid row and get someone that cannot read or write and win this case. People, this is an open and shut case. Any attorney can do this and get the maximum allowed by law. Why then, do these two firms feel they have to advertise before the bodies are even cold in order to represent them? In closing, I would like to say that I know many attorneys and they are good people. But, the attorneys and law firms that advertised on Wednesday do give all attorneys a bad name. Isn't it funny that there are 1000's of lawyer jokes? Wonder why? Just go get a copy of the Wednesday's edition of the Lexington Herald and turn to pages B7 and B8 and you'll find the answer. 8-30-06 Nearer and nearer "it" comes. Seems to me like it was just last month we went through this thing. I remember very well the long lines, the great traffic jams and the many people running all over the streets of Jackson. I remember seeing people that I had not seen in years that I thought had moved away from Breathitt County, but found out they were still here and just "don't get out much anymore." Most everyone I see during "it" I actually know from the past or present. I see very few people that I don't actually know or have seen in and around Breathitt County in |
