Breathitt Online News Looking forward to Great Year in 2004. 1-5-04
Jackson, Ky
When we began the Online News in April of 2002, we set very realistic goals on where we wanted to be. Alot has happened in the past 2 + years. One of our members went on to become the Breathitt County Coroner, Bobby Thorpe Jr. and since the beginning, we have added several new writers, all of whom we are very proud of. We have covered breaking stories like the Athol tornado in '03 and the Feb. floods of '03. We have covered the high amount of drug related deaths as well as our election coverage. We have went from 200 page visits a day, to an average of 1,700 a day now peaking at over 2,000 hits per day. We are greatful to all of you that visit all our web pages, and look forward to some very exciting additions throughout this year. We will continue to add regional news straight from local papers. We will also be looking to printing our Newletter for the public in July. As Always, we would like to say thank you to all of you and wish you a happy and proseperous year! aa.
A DANGEROUS MEDIUM Investigative Report by Marc Short 2-10-04
I first want to apologize for the long delay since my previous article. I have been working on several investigative reports that require more than just a couple hours of writing time.
This article is about the reality of Internet predators. For the last month I have spent approximately 35 to 40 hours on the Internet logging into various chat rooms while giving the impression that I was a minor. I did this in order to see just how susceptible I would be to Internet harassment.
I logged in with two different user names, Daddyslittlegirl09 and Scoobydoo12. I used these names to give the impression that I was a child. I then logged into various chat rooms which I can not mention here due to licensing restrictions, but I can honestly tell you that I was harassed a total of 13 time while in the chat rooms. These harassments varied from sexual references and questions, to questions about who I was, where I lived, or if my parents were home. I even had one person ask me to look for my parents credit cards and give them the number for a free prize.
These findings disturbed me very deeply since I have a 13 year old sister of my own and would never want anyone to take advantage her. So, to help parents protect their children from online predators I’ve come up with a list of procedures to help guard your children and your computer.
Most computers allow you to restrict certain websites from use. Use this option to restrict popular chat room websites.
Check your Internet history list often to see where your kids are going online.
Install firewalls to keep your computer from being hacked into.
Completely turn off Computer if you have an always on connection like DSL or Cable when you are not using it.
Talk to your kids about the danger of online predators and tell them to be cautious.
Report any online harassment to your Internet service provider.
If you follow these procedures then hopefully you will avoid the real and disturbing possibility of online harassment and hacking. We must always realize that even though the Internet is a valuable too, it can also be a dangerous medium.
Future investigative reports are forthcoming.  Marc Short
