| Back-to-back roundups target drug dealers in Clay, Jackson counties 12-21-05
Drug roundups targeting individuals suspected of selling everything from marijuana to methamphetamine were conducted in adjoining counties on Monday, December 19. Detectives from Operation UNITE were joined by local law enforcement agencies from Clay and Jackson counties in attempting to serve warrants on 47 people. In addition, officers sought to arrest seven fugitives from previous roundups and six persons wanted by the Two Rivers Drug Task Force. As of Monday night a total of 30 people had been located. Among those arrested was a 25-year-old Manchester woman who was part of a drug diversion scheme involving a former Clay County doctor (see related story). Also, several drug cases from Jackson County included charges made possible by passage of Senate Bill 63 earlier this year. “Illegal drug sales are rampant throughout these counties,” said Paul Hays, deputy law enforcement director for UNITE. “As a result of the extraordinary cooperative efforts between city, county and state departments we have been able to obtain drug-related indictments on nearly 150 people in Clay and Jackson counties in the past 16 months.” “Much of this success,” Hays continued, “is the result of citizens rallying together to say they have seen enough misery and pain inflicted by illegal drug use. Their tips have allowed us to build strong cases to get these dealers off the streets, and UNITE will continue to do everything it can to address concerns.” In addition to drug investigations, UNITE Executive Director Karen Engle noted local community coalitions are providing exemplary leadership in drug education and treatment, and again praised citizen efforts to pass tougher methamphetamine legislation during the 2005 General Assembly. “Faith-based efforts are helping families deal with the destructive nature of drugs, addicts are receiving help breaking their habit and support networks have been established for those completing rehabilitation programs, and schools are forming anti-drug clubs,” Engle said. “People are determined to take their communities back, and UNITE is proud to offer resources to enable these grass-roots efforts,” Engle continued. “No better example is the support shown for SB 63 – a bill that would not have otherwise passed.” Monday’s efforts began about 7:30 a.m. at the Manchester Recreational Center in the Beech Creek Community of Clay County. Joined by officers from the Manchester Police Department, Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London, and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, UNITE detectives sought to arrest 24 people on warrants following a lengthy undercover investigation and seven fugitives from two previous roundups in Clay County – August 18, 2004 and November 16, 2005. Those arrested were lodged in the Clay County Detention Center. After a short break for lunch, UNITE moved up the road to McKee to begin arresting 23 individuals wanted after undercover investigations spanning more than six months. The roundup also included six persons wanted by the Two Rivers Drug Task Force. Assisting were deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Kentucky State Police. Those arrested were lodged in the Jackson County Jail. This was the third roundup conducted in Jackson County by UNITE. Others were held August 19, 2004 and February 7, 2005.
