Breathitt UNITE Coalition Meeting Monday, October 11, 2004 Breathitt Life Skills Center

Call to Order, open in prayer by John Bunn

There was an article about the Coalition in Courier-Journal. Dan said it was one of the most positive articles written about UNITE. He warned the coalition of methamphetamine labs and internet pharmacies. He reminded us that UNITE is new and there will be some setbacks, but it is here to stay.
April brought us some flyers to put in retail stores about the ingredients used in methamphetamines.

Treasurer’s Report: Ending balance: $1,635.47. Brendon Miller donated $500.00 to the coalition and sponsored the full page coverage of the march in the Voice. Motion to accept the report, second, and the motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS
Bylaws: Will be posted on the website for everyone’s review. They will be discussed more next meeting. 

Committee Reports:
Court Watch: Bruce Herald - update on cases in the system. On Oct. 22nd, there will be three cases at pre-trial conference. A majority of the cases have gone past pre-trial conferences. On Nov. 1, he has a jury trial. On Nov. 5-two more cases on pre-trial. On Nov. 19.-three cases on pre-trial. On Dec. 6-jury trial. He also shared facts about methamphetamines from a meeting he attended. 
Gerry asked that we have badges by Nov. 1 and April will check on that.
There will be court watch training at the Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center on Thursday, Oct. 28, 5 p.m. The speaker will be John Becknell from the Clay County UNITE Coalition.
Family Support/Treatment/Aftercare: Treatment line is up and running and treatment vouchers will be available by the first of the year. On Nov. 22nd, there will be another “Families in the Know”. It will be a round-table discussion with doctors, pastors, counselors, and others. AA/NA meetings are going on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Bailey Center. Al-Anon is still available. Mildred got some information on a mentoring program through the state and more information will be available later. The next meeting will be Nov. 8th at 6:00 p.m. at the Life Skills Center. Bobby and Mildred will be at Jackson for the Health Fair on October 28th.
Fundraising: Sell the shirts!!! They are $6.00. If anyone wants one, let Donna know.
Neighborhood Watch: Tim Kilborn did the training. Next meeting will be Nov. 7th at 4 p.m. at City Hall.
Youth Activities: The soccer grant has been approved and the money should be available in the spring. The STOP club from Breathitt High will do an informational program at halftime of the football game on Oct. 22nd. The next meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 28, at 7:00 p.m. at Tommy’s Place.
Education: Kickoff for this initiative is coming up. There was nothing to report.
Medical Advisory: Nothing to report.

NEW BUSINESS
Karen has spoken to both judges and they are interested in doing the drug court. The community has to support this effort in every way. 
Claude Barrett was present from the JPD and presented a statement from the city police force.
