Local team wins Championship in annual Riverside Tourney 7-17-03
Watching a young woman throw a nearly perfect strike from left field to first base was one part of all the exciting action that took place on the Riverside Christian School campus recently. More throws like that one, great catches while falling into the fence, double plays, and, of course, home runs over the fence were all seen in the Women’s Double Elimination Softball Tournament. Dr. O’s Angels, sponsored by Dr. Michael Oghia, drew a bye in the opener and then won three straight games to claim the Championship Trophy. The returning champions, the CBS team from Manchester, lost their second game but then fought their way back to play in the finals. It was an exciting finish with the Angels winning, 15-11. The CBS team is sponsored by Clay Building Supply in Manchester.  All the action took place at the Hostetler Memorial Park on the Riverside campus. The Doran Hostetler Memorial is a gift from the graduating classes of 2000 and 2002.
Trophies went to the champions and runners-up, also to each member of those teams.

A Most Valuable Player was selected from each team and results were as follows:
Dr. O’s Angels - Peggy Moore, CBS - Tina Pennington, Twelve Pack - Jessica Morris, Lost Creek - Brenda Tincher, Leslie County - Ashley Hagans.  Tina Pennington also received the Golden Glove trophy for the Tourney. Dena Smith of Dr. O’s Angels received the Slugging trophy.
The more than eight hours of nearly non-stop softball was managed well by Verlin Gross, Jeff Noble, and Roy McClees.
Dr. O’s Angels — Jill Morris, Teresa Combs, Becky Bowling, Lisa Lindon, Kristie Combs, Kristi Combs, Stephanie Napier, Dena Smith, Peggy Moore, Polly Sebastian, Bertha Sebastian, Rhea Chapman.
CBS — Trina Pennington, Margaret Ward, Pat Hyde, Ruth Howard, Jackie "New York", Brianne Bundy, Jan Maggard, Lesa Walker, Mariah Ablery, Tina Pennington, Misty Collins, and Regina Hipsher, McKeshia Henson, Mildred Gilbert. They were managed by Darnell Hipsher
Moon Dogs — Kevin Lindon, Chris Amburgey, Scott Cornett, Jamie Couch, Orville Caldwell, Jerry Don Combs, Sam Mullins, Scott Mack, Jeff Baker, Rick Wooton.
Tri County - Brett Begley, Chris Varney, Doug Clark, Bobby Ratliff, Clayton Smith, Derrick Whitaker, Bob Begley, Michael Marcum, Dan Howard, Josh Todd, Steve Hudson.

Seven teams vie for honors in Riverside Tournament 7-02
Moon Dogs may seem like an unusual name for a men’s softball team, but it seemed appropriate when they won the championship game and the moon was shining down on them.
It was all part of the annual July 4th celebration held at Riverside Christian School. The Men’s Double Elimination Tournament started at 8:30 a.m. and seven teams battled their way through ten games of hard fought softball.
But there were still three teams in the running and it was starting to get dark. Once again everyone still involved moved to Douthitt Park in Jackson to play the last two games under the lights. Tri County and Lee Allen’s Breathitt County Merchants battled it out to see who would play in the championship game. Tri County had won two earlier games. Lee Allen’s team lost their first game but fought their way back to compete in the semi finals. Tri County won, 14-6. Even when bodies get tired and uniforms muddy, the hard hitting and dazzling catches continue. About 11:00 p.m. it was all over when the Moon Dogs defeated Tri County, 14-2.
Several awards were handed out during the Tourney and at the close. A Most Valuable
Player was selected from each team and the results were as follows: Moon Dogs - Orville Caldwell, Tony Turner’s team - Derek Turner, Riverside - Shane Ellis, Lee Allen’s Breathitt County Merchants - Lee Allen, Twelve Pack - Tim Gwin and Ronnie Morris, Tri County - Chris Marcum, East Kentucky Outlawa - Dustin Hall.
Orville Caldwell also received the Golden Glove trophy for the Tourney. The Best Batting Average trophy went to Tim Ritchie of Lee Allen’s team. His average for the day was a great .800.
The Slugging trophy went to Scott Cornett of Moon Dogs who his 3 home runs, 3 triples, 1 double, and 4 singles. He had 6 RBI’s.
A man who has several hundred trophies of his own, many from playing softball, knows a good bit about running a tournament. Bill Jones, a Riverside grad, does a great job, along with scorekeeper Paul Weaver. They both expressed their appreciation for all those who helped umpire and for the good sportsmanship that was shown throughout the Tourney.

                                          U16 Soccer Team wins again

Warriors Take Out Hazard 3-1
The Breathitt Co. Warriors notched their second win of the early season by knocking off the Hazard Fire team 3-1 this past Saturday April 13th,2002. This game was considered to be the game between two of the stronger teams in this area. The action in the first half of play proved to be a battle of strong defensive plays by both teams. The Warriors were able to get some excellent shots at the goal, but the Hazard defense stopped
the shots from going in. Richard Combs of the Warriors was awarded a penalty shot early in the game, but the attempt was just off the side of the net. Following a couple of trips up and down the field the Warriors were given another penalty shot and Josh Thompson put the ball in the goal to give the Warriors a 1 -0 lead late in the first half. With only a few minutes left in the half, the Hazard Fire team pushed the ball up the field and kicked the ball in for their first goal from the left side of the field to tie the score at 1 to 1. As the second half of action began the Warriors tightened their defense and .was able to keep the ball on their end of the field for most of the second half. Strong defensive play by Warriors, Mike Hamblin, Josh Howard, Casey Curry
and Julie Sygiel kept the Fire from penetrating the defense and getting more shots at the goal. The Warriors got more shots at the goal and halfway through the half, Dutch Chapman took a long shot from the right side that seem to float just over the outstretched arms of the Hazard goalie to give the Warriors a 2 -1 lead.
Coach Chapman kept putting in fresh players so the team could keep the defensive pressure on the Fire team. This move allowed the Warriors to keep the ball on their end of the field and set up the last score of the game.
After taking the ball from Hazard the offense worked the ball down the field and Joe Roberts made a pass to the right side to Michael Hensley who then worked the ball around the defensive players to put the ball in the left side of the net to make the final score 3- 1. The Warriors will be traveling to Floyd Co. this Saturday to take on the Pike Revolution team. Following that game the Warriors will be playing the next three games at home at the Douthitt Park. Everyone is invited to come out and watch some exciting soccer action and support the Breathitt Soccer League!

                                                           Girls Softball Action
Jackson, Ky.The first game of the Girls High School District Tournament was held at Douthitt park on Monday May 20th.  The National Anthem opened the game with Britni Tincher singing it wonderfully.  On a sad note, everyone in attendance gave a minute of silence for Tim Campbell, who was passed away yesterday.  Tim was the Boys Jackson High School Tigers Coach.
The game pitted two Breathitt County teams against each other as the Breathitt High Lady Cats went up against the Jackson City Lady Tigers.  The game started out slow with Breathitt getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning.  The Lady Cats added 8 more runs by the bottom of the 6th inning and won the game 10-0.  The game was played well by both teams and the final score did not tell the tale of the game.  Lorna Strong and Vanessa Combs both pitched great for their perspective team.  Lorne Ditsch played a great 1st base for the Lady Cats and Sharon Campbell showed why she is the starting shortstop for the Lady Tigers.  Breathitt High Center Fielder, Lindsey Stevens, hit a Home Run in the 6th inning also.  Hats off to all of these girls.  The Breathitt High Lady Cats now have to face yet another team from Breathitt County in the Riverside Lady Rams tomorrow at 6:30 which follows the game at 5:30 between Cordia and Knott County.

Warriors Take Down Pike Co. 9 -4
Prestonsburg, Ky. The Breathitt Co. Warriors continued their winning ways by knocking off
the Pike Co. Revolution team Saturday April 20th, 2002, by the score of 9 -4. With this win the Warriors
improve their record to 3 -0 for the season. This game would see the Warriors only have 11 players to play the game. Coach Chapman would have no subs to work in and out, therefore, he was concerned about his players having to play the entire game without rest. The Warriors started the game with strong offensive play and quickly shattered the hopes of the Pike Co. team of beating the Warriors. They kept the ball on their end of the field and was able the score early. Josh Thompson came down the middle of the field and received a pass from Joe Roberts and put the ball in for a 1 -0 lead. Shortly after this play the Warriors defensive player, Saxton Davis, took the ball from the Pike Co. team and worked it up to Michael Hensley who sent the ball to Dutch
Chapman, cutting to the net to score the second goal. Pike Co then came back to score their first goal to get within one of the Warriors. The Warriors offense really got going then. Michael Hensley received a pass for Doug Haddix at mid-field and worked the ball to the right side and put the ball in the net to give them a 3 -1 lead. After some fine defensive plays by Thomas Kemper and Drew Davidson the Warriors got the ball to Joe Roberts, slashing in front of the net to score the fourth point of the half. As the Revolution team put the ball in play after this score, Mike Hamblin took the ball away from them and passed it to Dutch Chapman coming across the mid-field line, and he kicked the ball over the hands of the Pike Co. goalie to give the Warriors a 5 -1 lead. Pike Co. was able to score near the end of the half to make the halftime score 5 -2. The Warriors continued their excellent offensive play into the second half. Josh Thompson scored his second goal early to increase their lead to 4 and after Carl Nallieux stopped a couple of good shots from Pike Co. the Warriors worked the ball up field to Michael Hensley who cut to the middle and scored the Warriors seventh goal. Josh Thompson would score one more time from mid-field to make it 8 -2. Near the end of the game Pike Co. managed to score two quick goals to make the score 8 -4. Dutch Chapman received a pass from Josh Howard and scored his third goal to make the final score 9 -4 for the Warriors. Coach Chapman was very pleased with the way the offense played and the power with which they kicked the ball. The defense played great also  and considering the fact that all players had to play the entire game with no breaks, showed playing as a team brought this victory home. The Warriors play this coming Saturday at 2:30 against the Letcher Co. Swarm team. Everyone is invited to come out and support the Warriors.

Former U.K. Players upend 14th Region Allstars
Breathitt County. Breathitt County Basketball fans were treated to some history Friday, June 29th, 2002, when former UK players, Jared Prickett, Allen Edwards, Jeff Brasso, & Dale Brown defeated a very game 14th Region AllStar Squad headed up by Tim Gross, John Combs & Cluster Howard.  Jared Prickett impressed many with his non stop hustle.  He ran end to end the entire time he was in the game.  Jeff Brasso was also quite impressive showing off his range by hitting several 3 pointers. The 14th region allstars kept the game close with good hard work and rebounding well. Tim Gross, although out sized by the larger UK players, more than held his own, battling down low and with some nice passing.  The highlight of the evening had to be Allen Edwards showcasing his versatility by downing several 3 pointers, and then making several nice moves under the basket. After all was said and done, the Former UK players walked away with a hard fought 132-119 victory.  After the game Allen Edwards said he was pleased and surprised at the level to which the 14th region allstars played. He said that alot of times during these type games, most of the players have more fun than anything.  He said he could tell right away that the 14th region Allstars wanted to win the game.  Jared Prickett, after arriving a few minutes late, said he thought it was one of the most enjoyable places he had played and that the fans were absolutely great. Team Jamie consisted of Jamie Gross, Edger Raleigh, Jesse Haddix, Kyle Lively, Donnie Henson, JOSH Sewell, Pernell Francis, and Logan Smith.
It was a stormy evening at Douthitt park when these teams battled in the first annual City Bowl Championships. These two teams faced each other twice in the regular season the first game resulted in what some would say an upset with Team Jamie the victor 48 to 35. The second game would be a different outcome with Team Phillip winning by a considerable margin. Which would leave the City Bowl to determine the true champion and The two time State champion of Breathitt County High School Phillip Watts lead his team to victory with a convincing 48 to 0 win over Team Jamie.
All the guys played really well this season and we hope to get more participation next year for the Men’s Flag Football League. I would like to thank Rose Brothers for sponsoring the cookout we had after the game and Mike Channey at Jiffy Mart for helping out as well.

BYF Coaches Sport New Look 5-02
Jackson, Ky; The Breathitt Youth Foundation Mighty Might Dodgers came storming in this season as an expansion team.  All new players is what Coach's Mike Taulbee and Doug Hudson wanted.  They got more than they bargained for though!
At the beginning of the season, the two coach's told their players that since this was a new team, that this would be a learning and building year and if they could win at least 4 of their games this season, that the coach's would let the team shave them bald headed.  Bad deal coach!
These kids played their hearts out and proved to not only the coach's and parents of this team, but everyone in the BYF program that they were here to play ball, and play ball they did.  On Sunday June 9th, the Dodgers won their fourth game of the season and after the game looked at their coach's with broad grins.  Being the men of their word, both coach's sat down and every member of the team, shaved and shaved until both coach's looked like they joined the Kojak fan club.  Making sure that they were clean cut, all parents, along with the coach from the team they had beat, Doug Gross, made sure the job was done before they got up.
Congratulations to this young team for reaching their goal and at the same time, saving their coach's on a haircut and future expenses for shampoo.
