| Highland-Turner’s 2nd & 3rd Grade Happenings 4-26-04 The students have been busy reviewing for the CTB test. We will be testing the last week of April and the first week of May. Remember to remind your children to get a good nights rest, eat a good breakfast, and try their best on their test during the testing weeks. Since we don’t want to spend all our time reviewing inside the classroom, the students have been working in the greenhouse. We reviewed the life cycle of a plant and discussed how a seed has all the things a plant needs to survive except soil, sunlight, and water. These are things we can give the seed so it will produce a plant. The students planted their own seeds and have been keeping a journal of the changes they are observing. Pictured below are some of the students watering and measuring their plants. The students are keeping a record of their plant’s growth in inches and in centimeters. Mothers don’t be surprised to see your child’s plant become a Mother’s Day gift. After the students have taken their plants home, they will reread their journals and reflect on the life cycle of a plant. Top Accelerated Readers for the month of April are Emily Turner-75.1, Mattie Turner-46.8, Travis Smith-39.9, Lindsay Noble-34.6, Emily Thatcher-50.4, Katlin Koehler-31.6, and Jonathan Craft-28.0. We wish the following students a Happy Birthday. Jennifer helped them be more aware of facets of their own Appalachian culture and, she taught fourth and fifth grade students how to play the dulcimer. In cooperation with Jennifer on this project the art teacher, Ms. Karen Deaton, had the students use the dulcimer as part of a watercolor still life. As they drew and painted the still life they were able to study the shapes and particular details of the dulcimer and compare it to other instruments that are similar. They learned several watercolor techniques in the process and were asked to write about what they had learned. Sixth graders did not participate in the workshop but did paint the still life. |
