4-26-04 After winning first place in school, county, and district competitions, Corey Spicer won Honorable Mention at the state level.   He competed against fourteen other entries at the State Level (all 5th grade students in Kentucky had this opportunity). This is the first time that AARP has awarded a second place recipient in the annual state essay competition entitled “Why My Grandparent Should Be the AARP Grandparent of the Year”.
He received a beautiful plaque and monetary gift from AARP during the April Meeting of the Breathitt County Retired Teachers; he read his outstanding essay again to the group and was highly praised for his entry.    His Grandmother, Marcella Spicer, received a beautiful plaque from AARP also.  Corey had written his essay about his grandmother.
He has also received congratulations from his family and Rousseau School personnel.  Also Mrs. Alta Lindon , President of BCRTA was very impressed and told about the announcement at the Louisville Conference of the Retired Teachers.  Corey, Breathitt County School System, and Rousseau Elementary School were all mentioned in glowing terms.
He has also read his essay at church.  When the Sunday School Superintendent asked him to tell about his blessings this week, he responded by telling her about having the opportunity to go to the meeting and receive his money and plaque.  Also that it was wonderful to have loving grandparents.

WHY MY GRANDPARENT SHOULD BE THE AARP GRANDPARENT OF THE YEAR
Grandparents are very important.  I’ve seen in the newspaper that a lot of children are living with their grandpas and grandmas.  I should know because I live with mine.  When my mom and her friend went to another state to live the way they wanted to, my grandma made sure that my brother and I had a loving home.  She and Grandpa gave us a good home.  That’s why I think that she is one of the greatest people on earth.
She was so generous.  She gave us food and clothing.  That’s not all.  She gave us her time, money, and most of all her love.  She is always sharing and caring for us.  She is very hardworking at her secretary job.  So we help her with chores like cleaning, washing dishes, and folding clothes.  This makes us a happy, caring family.
There are other things that she thinks are important in my life, such as getting a good education.  She always encourages me to do my best work and helps me study for my weekly spelling test.  She believes that all homework should be finished before practice or basketball games.
She feels like team sports are important ways to get exercise and learn to get along with others.  She takes me to each thing and brings me home.  Sometimes she even has to get me something extra to eat and drink.
Also she takes my brother and I to Sunday School each Sunday.  Last week she helped me make macaroni and cheese for Thanksgiving dinner at church.   Last summer she helped with Bible School and took me to Camp Lewis, a church camp.  During December, she will be taking me to practice for our Christmas program.  Becoming a Christian and being a good citizen are very important things.
As a fifth grader having friends and being a good friend is important.  My grandma is always nice to my friends.  She is patient and understanding.  She accepts a lot of responsibility, helps me make good decisions, and expects respect from us.  She has taught me how to be a friend.  She is one of my BEST friends and I appreciate her.  That is why I think my Grandma is the best grandparent ever..
