The Jackson City High School Lady Tigers Softball Team have turned up the heat this year. 5-10-05
After their 14-7 win against OBI Tuesday, their record is 7-1. Coach Fugate credits the teams success this year to a team that bonds together. All the girls have the same attitude and that is to play as a team and not worry about individual stats.
The Lady Tigers started their season with a huge 10-2 win over Leslie County followed by a 9-3 win over Riverside. In the Knott Central game, the Lady Tigers fell by a score of 10-8, losing in the 7th Inning,. Coach Fugate stated that a notation mark be put by this game due to the starting Catcher, Brit Spicer, not being in the game. Since then, the Lady Tigers have put up a 5 game winning streak to put their record at 7-1. During this streak, a win over Perry Central was a highlight due to this being the first time JHS has ever beaten Perry Central in any sport by the score of 16-1. June Buchanan, Owsley County and OBI came out hot against the Lady Tigers, but were held down at the end.
Every girl on the Varsity Squad have very impressive stats so far. Tara Epperson (Junior) has been a great lead off batter and has done what a lead off batter should do. And that is get on and score. Alyx Couch (Junior) has not only come back from a very bad injury to the leg, but has found her swing again and playing shortstop better each game. Brit Tincher (8th Grader) plays like a veteran high school player and not an 8th grader. Her defense and batting is one that will shine statewide in the coming years. Danielle McIntyre (Senior) has filled the spot of this years assistant Coach, Chrissy Godsey, and picked up where she left off. Her defense is getting better each game and her hitting improves and has been very impressive. The outfield consist of veteran high school players. Jerri Gross (Senior) has one of the best batting stats of the team and has already hit 3 home runs. This along with her fielding make her a well rounded player. Julie Sygiel (Senior) is deadly in Center Field and if not caught, she will run it down with her blazing speed. Her batting has come around and when she gets on base, she gives clinics on how to steal bases. Samantha Fugate (Senior) is also deadly in the field and shows how a right fielder needs to play. Her batting is great and this makes her a well rounded player also. Brit Spicer is no doubt the show stopper. Being a catcher is no problem for Brit as she can throw the best of them out. She has the strength to not only throw runners out, but also to give hitting clinics. A perfect swing shows when you read her stats. Lexie Lusk has grown into a good pitcher. Assistant Coach Hargis Epperson should be given credit for the pitching squad as he has spent many hours with them. Lexie is a believer that if she can't strike them out that her defense will handle it, which is a perfect quality of a pitcher. She is also one of the best bunters around and will do what it takes to move and score the runners on base. Bunting is not her only thing as she has a very impressive batting stat. Also helping Varsity is Tiff Gross (Freshman) and Paige McIntosh (8th Grade), who have run in most of the games for Lusk and Spicer. Randi Barnett (Freshman) has played Center Field and ran and has shown very impressive plays. Kayla Smith (8th Grade) has shown she is ready to play on the varisty level at any given time and has filled in on many occasions.
The Junior Varsity is lead by Randi Barnett (Freshman) who is a great pitcher and a great hitter. Tiffany Gross (Freshman) guards the plate as catcher and her speed on the bases is great. Shauna Godsey (Freshman) is following her sisters footsteps as a First Baseman and is doing a good job. Paige McIntosh (8th Grade) has shown that she may be small, but can stand tall with the best of them with her hitting, fielding and speed. Kaya McIntosh (8th Grade) is ready for Varsity any time the call is made. Her fielding and hitting is far above expectations. Jessica Brewer (Sophomore) has the ability to be a great hitter and her fielding has improved tremendously. Courtney Trent (8th Grade) has stepped up and can play any infield or outfield position. Her speed and agility help in her game. Brooke Gross has no doubt been the most improved player so far with her catching and recent string of hits.
The Coaching staff of Danny Fugate, Hargis Epperson and Chrissy Godsey have molded a team that will no doubt be one to be dealt with come District time. Danny comes with 22 years in the BYF and three years High School experience. Hargis Epperson has a background of coaching in the BYF for over 10 years and three years High School experience. Chrissy Godsey has come through the ranks, playing three years at Jackson City and now coaching some of her old teamates. Together, this squad of coaches have made a big difference in the team. Good luck to all the Lady Tigers and hopefully to a great second part of their season

Powell too Much for Tigers
.
Although the Tigers lost the game, they are starting to show the attitude Coach Hoskins wants. They will not quit and play with alot of heart. Wolfe County too Much for Jackson C
ity      12-1-04
Jackson,
Ky.    The Wolfe County Wolves proved to be too strong for the Jackson City Tiger as they walked away with a 51-41 victory. Wolfe County was much bigger than the Tigers and continued to build a lead through the 3rd quarter. After the lead reached 20 + points, the undersized Tigers began their comeback. Jackson City, under the new direction of Coach Shannon Hoskins, showed they will not quit.
In the JV game, Jackson City mauled a bigger Wolfe County team, 43-29, with aggressive defense and all out hustle.
