Bobcat Nation Ready To Roar
The Kentucky high school football season is ready to kick off this weekend across the state. The mountains once again will showcase the top teams in class 1A and class 2A. As usual, look for Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, and Belfry all to make a run for the carpet to bring another championship back to the mountains. Here is a look at the region IV, district 7 teams.
The Breathitt County Bobcats have reloaded for the 2005 football campaign with all eyes on a December 2nd championship date at Papa Johns Stadium. The Bobcats have won three class 2A state championships over the last 10 years and have remained among the elite programs in the commonwealth. This could be one of the more challenging seasons for veteran coach Mike Holcomb trying to mix a collection of veteran talent with the inexperience of youth. The Bobcats will be a favorite to capture another district 7 title. Seniors Todd Robinson (RB/DE) and Shelby Stacy (MLB, RB) will key if the Bobcats want to make a deep run in the play-offs. Sophomore Colby Fugate will be the starting quarterback and will get tested early as the Bobcats play a torrid pre-district schedule. Casey Allen returns for the Bobcats and is ranked as 7th best player in region IV. Look for Jared Hays and Dustin Cesefske to have standout seasons. Senior Byron Johnson also returns for the Bobcats and will provide much needed experience.
Leslie County will return a very experienced team that only lost 4 players due to graduation, and could give the Bobcats a run for the district title. Quarterback Quenton Morgan, perhaps one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the mountains will be back to lead the Eagles.
Cawood had a 4-7 record last season and were knocked out of the play-offs in the first round. The Trojans lost quarterback Andrew Brock but have a wealth of underclassman ready to step-up.
Graduation has also hit the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets hard. The Jackets, who were district runners-up last season, return James Miller, Brad Short and Josh Lewis to help the rebuilding process.
Knott Central has an up hill battle against district 7 teams. With new coach Joe Beder, the Patriots should be competitive and could earn a play-off berth.
Other Top Class 2A Teams
Ft. Campbell is loaded and will be a strong favorite to capture the schools first state championship. Mr. Football candidate Micah Johnson, a first team all-state selection last season, maybe one of the best athletes the commonwealth has produced in years.
Belfry returns 3 starters on offense are ranked the top team in region IV. Matt Maynard and Devin Kohari could lead the Pirates back to the carpet.
Prestonsburg will be led by quarterback David Shaffer and running back Brent Hamilton. The Blackcats have fell in the regional finals the last two seasons but this could be the season where the Blackcats make it to the represent the mountains at Papa John’s Stadium. .

The Jackson City Tigers have arguably one of the toughest schedules of any Class” A”
school in the mountains. Leslie Co., Hazard, Paintsville and Perry Central are some of the heavyweights on this year’s schedule. The Tigers have a deceiving 3-8 record, losing 3 games by 5 points or less and been very competitive in most of the games they have played. Their 1point loss to the Knott Central last week is evidence enough that this is a basketball program on the rise.

14th Region All “A” Classic Preview

Most experts across the commonwealth selected Wolfe Co. to represent the 14th region in the All “A” state tournament. It sounded logical at the time considering Hazard lost their top 8 players to graduation. I have watched Hazard over the years lose their top players to graduation time after time and still have one of the strongest teams in the 14th region. Here are the top 14th region Class “A” teams.
1. Hazard (14-4): Hazard very possible could represent the 14th region in both state tournaments this season. Hazard has won 10 straight games.
2. Wolfe Co. (8-7): The Wolves have been plagued by inconsistency all season. Cody Gilbert, Andrew Dunn and Dexter Dunn could provide enough power to get to Richmond.
3. Letcher (10-4): The Eagles are the surprise team in the mountains. Scoring machine Alex Williams will need some help if the Eagles want to make a deep run.
4. June Buchanan (11-4): The Crusaders have a very young team and are probably a year away from making noise. Freshman Clark Stepp is averaging 24.8 points a game.
5. Owsley Co. (7-8): The Owls have had some big wins but can they win 3 straight?
6. Jackson City (3-8) : The Tigers are very capable of pulling off upsets.
Eastern Kentucky Quarterbacks
Over the past decade, Eastern Kentucky has turned out some outstanding quarterbacks.  Tim Couch (University of Kentucky, Cleveland Browns) and Waylon Chapman (Eastern Kentucky University) in 1995 were the first two big name quarterbacks in our area to get statewide recognition. Kyle Moore (Morehead State) broke several school and state passing records while at Breathitt High.  Allen Sperry (Breathitt High) holds several state passing records and could have played college football. Justin Haddix ( Western Kentucky) was voted runner -up Mr. Football and was Gateway Conference Freshman of the Year. Perry Central’s Al Holland is taking snaps at Wake Forest. Breathitt Co.’s Jacob Hundley signed to play quarterback at Eastern Kentucky University. Yeah, I would say that these mountains have produced some pretty good quarterbacks.
